Honest Try: Jack's "Lazy Man's Orange Chicken"

- Today we're doing YET ANOTHER request. Cooking with Jack's "Lazy Man Orange Chicken."
I may not be the best choice for this one because I only ever eat Orange Chicken once in a blue moon, but let's give it a go anyhow!
Music used is from Donkey Kong Country 3. - Ігри
Take that marmalade, add some water and bread slices, and baby, you got a toilet wine going
😂
REAL LAZY MAN ORANGE CHICKEN: Microwave some chicken nuggets. Heat up a packet of precooked rice. Put the nuggets on the rice. Douse heavily in bottled sauce. Bone app the teeth.
Man, that’s basically just Panda Express
I was gonna say, as a lazy person, hand breading the chicken is far from lazy 😂
I really don't understand what was lazy man in this recipe, I mean the sauce had more steps than in the recipe I have used with the marmeladen, I thought he was going to skip the orange.
That chicken flouring method definitely captures the spirit of Jack.
💯 😂
I agree that it's as bad as any "technique" Jack has ever used
I'm sure you get this in the comments every video, but your consistent usage of (somewhat) obscure video game OSTs for the background music is such an important part of the Honest Tries experience.
Soundgarden and Donkey Kong Country 3, this man has the pinnacle of taste in music
I am baffled by what Jack considers a "lazy man" recipe sometimes. Like, if you're already cutting, breading, and frying your chicken, then you've done the hard part. What would be harder about making a proper sauce to go on it? A REAL Lazy Man orange chicken would be frozen popcorn chicken tossed with an easy sauce.
It makes no sense. Like, the chicken is easily the most time-consuming, tricky, and messy part of making Orange Chicken. He only saved time by making a slightly simpler sauce, which takes very little time to begin with.
Also, how is zesting your own orange lazy? This is just a different version of Orange Chicken.
I think what Jack means by lazy is being to lazy to look for correct ingredients.
I honestly thought he'd bread it then bake it less crispy but fairly easy
real lazy man's cooking is M I C R O W A V E
Even though you make the same thing as Jack, I’d rather try your version.
Far less likely to get you sick
The change in music when you switched to the rice gave me chills.
I know! I was thinking...oh crap the rice is burnt or something really sinister.
pro tip for zesting citrus you dont want the white stuff, so kinda use the tool like a peeler. meaning make one motion for top-bottom (or vice versa) and slide over and repeat. the whites can be quite bitter and off-putting; unless Jack did it that way >.
Its so funny that the only lazy portion is the sauce, which is already the easiest part. A better idea would be to buy premade orange chicken sauce at the store, which costs just as much as the bottle of BBQ sauce
For the second version of "Lazy Man's Orange Chicken", he doesn't use the marmalade instead he uses orange juice stock concentrate, ketchup, and vinegar for the sauce and he pours it all over frozen chicken nuggets. I'd love to see you make it though, and from what it looks like, Jack is not changing his lifestyle in the slightest. He's doing the same stuff that got him sent to the hospital in the first place.
Man really bought frozen chicken nuggets to make orange chicken instead of buying frozen orange chicken.
@@Telthar Yep, only Jack
Damn. Sorry to hear that. Yeah, I'll look into his part 2 and do it in a little while.
Asking why he just didn't buy frozen orange chicken at that point is the obvious question, but to me the REAL thinker is that he swapped the BBQ sauce for a homemade creation of ketchup, brown sugar and vinegar which is just.....a really basic BBQ sauce. He made MORE work for himself with the sauce as well.
"I'm not interested in getting salmonella just yet"
Is this hinting at a 100k special?
Salmonella Special
I love how most of jacks "lazy" recipies ussually dont even really save any time or work than just doing it right and getting a much better outcome
I agree with you on marmalade being gross. It's way too sweet and lacks good orange flavor or tang, which is what I was hoping for when I first had marmalade.
It's better if you get it from a farmers market or make it yourself the ready made brands like Smuckers don't add enough peel and zest give it the nice tang
Yeah. Different brands have different qualities. I once had a marmalade that was really bitter. I like the sweet ones though so I wasn't a fan of that one. Can't remember what brand it was.
@@angusmctwangstick4079 Smuckers is probably the one you're thinking of it's very sweet
@@ayajade6683 I think I've only tried UK brands because I live in England. I've just googled it though and it is available here but I don't remember seeing it on our shelves. Most of the brands here are sweet. I normally just get the cheapest one with some rind in. If I see it on the shelf I'll probably give it a try though, thanks 👍.
His Lazy man vids are harder than just doing the actual dish lol
Lol We are listening while cooking and dad is actually shaking his mushrooms in his Tupperware. 😂
i like marmalade when it isn't too sweet. I love the bitterness of the rinds with the sweetness of the jam.
DKC3 is such a jam! We'll see about the chicken...
Oops! Edited because I replied to the wrong comment 🙃 sorry bout that.
@@Damnation2man haha, no worries!
Well his first video back and it was ground beef, mushrooms and a bunch of cheese. i don't think he's changed his diet much.
Love ur videos man I just came from August the ducks vid u got a new subscriber, also I think a fun one to try would be jacks best burger ever recipe.
The flashbacks whenever I'm listening to these SNES soundtracks on your video. I'm off to play DK Country 3
I was zoning out while I was watching this and then suddenly came to full attention like "is this the DONKEY KONG MUSIC???????" checked the description and sure enough.
video was good but like so many props for the instant flashback to my childhood.
A man of taste I see. Great review . Dig the hat, sir ;)
Soon as I heard the Donkey Kong Country 3 map screen theme I subbed ❤
Is there a way to support you?
I really like your videos, editing methods, overall attitude and personality, and I would like to chip in to show some appreciation for your content.
Plus, you're into Thief, DKC and Streets of Rage, which is just a nice bonus on top of the already great content you've been pouring out these past months.
Oh hey I really appreciate it! Maybe at some point I'll have something like that. But really- for now just watching is enough! ❤
Ive actually made this when I was younger just messing around in a restaurant I worked in but used orange marmalade, orange zest, soy and chili sauce instead of bbq and oddly enough it tasted like orange chicken.
Hey man, I love your content - It's really good. I think this one was just harder to watch with the camera POV. Otherwise, keep it up!
the biggest crime about this recipe to me is that orange sauce is really easy to make, especially if you already have all the ingredients (which is pretty likely, you can substitute rice wine vinegar with apple cider vinegar- it isn't quite the same, but it's pretty close)
bro with the music this is like watching Found Footage Chicken
I know adding Jack's name to a recipe kinda prepares you for a disaster right out of the gate, but this recipe isn't actually too bad. If you fix it up a bit, it can even be good.
Oh god the way he zests things. You arent supposed to get any of the white pith, he went all the way down to the flesh. I cant imagine how bitter that is.
This man used that donkey Kong 3 soundtrack
Jack csme home from the hospital and immediately had a big sub from Firehouse Subs then filmed a cheeseburger cssserole. Hes not changing.
You could use the marmalade to make a simple pie or a pop tart, you could add more oranges to it with a pinch of salt if its a bit too sweet.
Another way to counteract the sweetness is probably cheese, cream cheese, mascarpone cheese, or you could use something like a greek yogurt or whipped cream to cut the sweetness when making the filling.
What Jack is missing out on, is refinement. His ideas aren't all bad. They just need a lot more attention to detail. You don't need to be a chef, to know where the dish is lacking. I never had orange chicken, so it might be what you're looking for, but Chinese usually has flavor combinations like the famous sweet and sour. This is (relatively) sweet BBQ sauce, sweet jam, sweet orange and a touch of salt. No spices, herbs, garlic...
The lemon alone would have helped a whole lot. But maybe liquid sugar is the original recipe.
Most restaurants just use orange juice or tang drink powder with soy sauce and Vinegar
He boiled egg whites in a plastic bag dude.
Good thing Uncle Roger will probably never see your rice cooking technique. It just might kill him - or at the very least make him put his leg down. Once you put the rice on the heat source, LEAVE IT ALONE. Do not mix/stir/whatever, just let it be. I mean, if he saw Jack's entire recipe he'd have a conniption fit anyways...
This was how I was taught by my ex in-laws- they were Cambodian. I always figured it was to prevent it from sticking on the bottom.
Uncle Roger is meant for comedical purposes, not a way of life or fucking law. People can cook it how they wish if thats the method they've learned in life.
@@mysterygamermgclues8864 No shit! Thank you for the heads up, I would've never figured that out without your illuminating comment.
i like your content man. only thing i can criticize is the camera setup. i think you should try to do it like how j kenji lopez alt does it. i think he has some sort of apparatus on his neck or head to hold the camera in place, giving the same "FPV" feel
Yeah, since I kind of screwed up with my pop socket placement on this new phone, I might have to do something like that. Don't really want to use a gopro, I think your suggestion might work better.
I like your hat- NNRU! And also TND for that matter lol
You probably don't need to slam the eggs down that hard to crack em, maybe a little bit lighter, and make sure your fingers are actually prying apart the 2 sides from the crack, hopefully it will spill a little less on the counter
Right!?!? I was looking at the amount of egg wasting like 👀 WHAT ARE YOU DOING SIR!!!
he gotta show them who's boss
I smashed them. I smashed them all. They're smashed, every single one of them. And not just the men eggs, but the women and the children eggs, too. They're like insects, and I smashed them like insects. I HATE THEM.
Hehe you made it lazier with the breading "hack" Hehe well done!
If you like sweet desserts, you could try incorporating the marmalade into a glaze of sorts? I used to make a really good orange cake with cayenne pepper added if you don't mind spice with your desserts. I don't like the "chunks" in the marmalade so I avoid buying it. I think the biggest problem with this recipe was the bbq sauce. Terrible idea. If i had to use marmalade in an orange chicken sauce recipe I'd thin it with some water, add cornstarch and cook it until thickened. I'd also season it so there's spice with the sweet. Orange chicken in my experience is sweet, tangy, and spicy.
You could potentially make some sort of Jaffa Cakes with the marmalade.
Most rice is also coated in arsenic which is a carcinogen, always wash it
Don't be sad about jack getting another heart attack/stroke combo. It's entirely his own doing. He will a vile person who will never change. He let his dominant arm go bad rather than train it to restore functionality. He never followed any diet advice and just kept on eating burgers and BBQ.
You could use the marmalade as a door stop... IDK man, I'm definitely on team gross
Based fellow hat merchant enjoyer.
cool videos
So I’m curious, are you still dealing with any leftover paint on your stove?
For a "lazy man's" recipe this recipe sure is a lot of work lol
Lazy man breading - check.
Will you try a Better than takeout recipe please?
You need to avoid getting the white parts in when zesting anything, it adds a bitter unpleasant taste
Hey, send me your marmalade, I love it!!!
I'm certain there are other recipies that use marmalade unrelated to Jack's cooking.
is that a metokur hat? holy based, i miss that lil sweetie
> ''I"m gonna go light on the marmalade cuz I don't like it'
> *Uses almost 1/5th of the jar*
lol
Me and my daughter JUST finished DK3 yesterday 🤣
It's hard to not say DK2 is my favorite, but DK3 is special and under appreciated. It will always hold a special place in my heart!
It’s funny that you mention, DK2 was also my favorite and the hardest imo. We started from DK3 going to 2 then the first. Good dose of nostalgia 👍🏾
To be fair, it has flavors that would work together in the right quantities (for people who like sweet and savory), but to call it orange chicken is a stretch. It needs more salt probably or some spice.
mayo paste from the guy who made monster engery boileed eggs
Sarbecue Bauce :)
(Nice soundtrack!)
yay! Hello Kitty bowl :3
How was "lazy man?" It took more effort then 90% of Jack recipes.
Chicken nuggets with dipping sauce and a side of rice.
If you ever want to make the orange sauce, use orange extract! A drop will do wonders for the sauce
Man, not lazy at all. My lazy orange chicken is frozen battered nuggets with marmalade, soy, and sesame oil. Pop the chicken in the oven, heat the sauce and done.
Make kolaczki's with the rest of that marmalade.
buckle up boys!
If you are going to use the zest from citrus you need to buy organic and you need to WASH IT FIRST.
make sure you cook your chicken completely no use trying these if they are gonna hurt you
As a huge fan of Chef Wang Gang I can say that the first five minutes of this video show nothing of the proper cooking technique I'm so used to admire. Nevertheless, thanks a lot for all the efforts to film this entertaining clip. Best wishes and take care.
Yeah, I'm just a normal guy trying to do things one-handed. No culinary training of any kind.
@@HonestTries Yep. And I can assure You that Your efforts are much appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Zesting should be only the small outer lauer not the white of a citrus
A few have mentioned that, thank you.
You forgot to wash the chicken.
Now I am hungry for Chinese food.
that's not chinese food
Are you still holding your camera with your mouth (*when you cut the chicken, for example)? Can we fund you a tripod? haha
3:14 omg you are such a good soul..
"remember to always wash your rice!" go ahead and make risotto with washed rice and tell me how it turns out
No
Oh my God... 🤢 I love Sweet Baby Ray's but D A M N. This looks way too sweet (still watching, will edit later) ! This is going to be a disaster
Edit: huh. Interesting. I thought it'd be a disaster. Maybe I'll try it but probably 1/2 the glaze used even though yours was a light glaze to begin with 🤣
Spoiler he’s not changing his lifestyle at all, I don’t remember jack using chicken breasts, I thought he just some chicken bites and dumped sauce on them unless he did a redo video
If you cook Jack’s chicken till it’s done so you don’t get Salmonella, is it truly an honest try? 🤔
Just from those ingredients I have a feeling this is going to be awful.
please do moms butter chicken it looks delicious
You don't need a rice maker for good rice!!? *watches Uncle Roger have a heart attack*
Why is it “lazy man” if you’re breading and frying? If you’re doing all that, you may as well make a better sauce. 😂 what was jack thinking?
have you seen his latest video? I think we are going to lose him.
I honestly can't believe there's a man in such delusion as Jack is. I mean, he's had two strokes, lost his right arm, he's obese and eats and cooks the unhealthiest and most hazardous food ever filmed. It's almost as he wants it to end on his own terms
Quite simply, he has refused to make any real changes in his diet/exercise level, even after multiple strokes.
Very sad. Hopefully it's just for the videos he makes and he's changing his normal diet. I think I had heard that he had eaten tons of fast food all the time for years, which will definitely do it. Maybe he thinks he's too far gone at this point.
@@HonestTries i hope not
I would like to see "Jack's Lazy Man's Sex lifestyle"
Not me!
My guy, you do not stir rice. Add rice to the pot, add water (you want the water to be 1.5x the amount of rice), bring to a boil, turn to low, add a pinch of salt, cover and let simmer for 30 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it sit for another 15 minutes, remove the lid, fluff with fork. perfect rice. Do NOT stir the rice as it comes out mushy, starchy and gummy. Also, rice cooks best using pressure, when you lift the lid, you release the pressure and then it has to build all over again.
Good advice, I will try this exact method next time I make rice.
@@HonestTries If you want the ultimate, fool-proof rice method, and you don't have a rice-cooker, cook it in the oven. Preheat your oven to 325, bring the water & rice to a boil on the stove(whatever ratio of water/rice you'd regularly use), set it in the oven with the lid on, and then set a timer 25 minutes. Once out of the oven, fluff and it's ready.
It's how I make all my rice now, both because it frees a burner on the stove *and* it seems to just...do it better? I honestly don't know how it makes so much of a difference, but it genuinely does.
@@RaptorJesus Interesting. I'll give this a shot as well!
why do all your bowls have chips in them
Because I use everything until it TURNS TO DUST
Aunt myrnas strings and pegs please
Definitely went a little too deep zesting that orange. The pith underneath the zest of oranges, lemons and limes is very bitter and chewy. Just saying for the future lol
Are you on twitch?
Not yet!
You over zested the citrus. You shouldn't go much deeper than the color of the rind, as the white part of the peel is very bitter.
Given how disgustingly sweet that sauce must be, I almost wonder if the bitter peel might actually be helping.
That was a lot of orange peel. I've tried recipes similar to this and wasn't a fan. My gf found one that uses orange juice and it tastes just like the chinese restaurant.
That's because most restaurants use orange juice or tang powder as it's cheap
@@ayajade6683 i bet. tastes better than these recipes in my opinion.
@@mikel6989 oh definitely especially with the weird choice of BBQ sauce
U crack eggs like u hate them
7:03 no i like the bugs
You will eat the rice bugs. You will be happy. 🥴
@@HonestTries 😄
this is too much effort. I assure you someone could just use chicken nugs
I like watching your videos, but most of the time I think that you must really like doing dishes lol. I would have put the sauce ingredients straight into the pan instead of dirtying 3 more bowls lol.
Theres already orange peel in the marmalade. Thats the gross part of marmalade. Why would you add more of the gross part? Jacks crazy
Orange zest adds in the oils which give the fruit its smell and makes the dish more flavorful. The rind is the bitter part
Remember, clean with hot water the orange and lemon to remove some of the synthetic wacks sealing before grinding.
That's wack.

Uuuhh.. didn't he use frozen chicken nuggets?
Smuckers marmalade is the worst I've ever had. It's not even worth eating, doesnt even taste like oranges to me. It should have so much zest in it that it's bitter.
