  • Hey everybody this was a hard video for me to produce because there was a ton of stuff I wanted to cover with this review. This review includes just a little bit about my grandpa and his service during the Second World War. He was a great man and I was lucky to have gotten to spend time with him when I was young. Anyways I hope you guys enjoys this review of the most K-Ration Items In One Review you'll probably ever see.

      Cheers to your grandfather and our vets. My grandpa served aboard a sub on the pacific front as an engineer, not as a combatant... but the USS Guavina has some tales to tell. So, like I said... cheers (a glass of whiskey, in my case) to our relatives who served and all our vets.

    Well everyone UA-cam demonized my video before I could even publish it. If your reading this message you should go over to the UA-cam twitter page and Thank them for screwing all the creators here on UA-cam. I made sure not to make anything offensive at all in this video so it makes no sense why they did this.

    I showed my grandad this video and he loved it. He carried a BAR with the first infantry in ww2 and transferred to the first cavalry in Korea where he was a 30 cal machine gunner. Unfortunately his division was hit hard at the Pusan perimeter and it messed him up pretty bad. He lit up seeing some of the things he remembered eating and told me a lot of things I never could get out of him so thanks for the vid man from calabash N.C.

    I really gotta say, Old Smokey, I'm very humbled and proud of your feelings for your grandpa. Mine was a Korea vet and passed when I was at scout camp when I was 14. I completely understand where you're coming from on remembering all the things he taught you. It's like there was so much they passed on, but theres so much more that was lost. I really admired my grandpa and I'm so glad to see you honoring yours in such a genuine and heartfelt way. Kudos brother. Thanks for the great video!

    I just came across this video and it hit me pretty hard. My grandfather just passed away a few months ago; he was a vet in WW2 too though he only joined in 1945 towards the end of the war at age 18 and thankfully in my opinion, never saw combat. He was my last grandparent to pass away and I really think it's tragic how the WW2 vets and in fact all veterans, are not getting the respect that they deserve. There are not many WW2 vets left, and unfortunately someday soon we will be left with no surviving veterans of the most world-changing war to ever happen.
    Thank you for making this video though Oldsmokey. I really appreciate how you wanted to share your grandfathers memories and achievements.

    It's Remembrance day this weekend in Britain which is a special time when we think about all the veterans who have died for us and we wear a poppy to show our support so for me this was a really apt video. I wear my poppy with pride and thank you for sharing your memories of your granddad with us.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  6 років тому +2

      Thank you Sally. I knew we had those days that were close like that. Ours being on Nov 11th was changed at one point but the public paid no attention to the government changing it and eventually they changed it back officially.

    • @CATTYNESS1
      @CATTYNESS1 6 років тому +1

      Oldsmokey Hi
      Ours is the 11th day at the 11th hour for 2 minutes silence - I work at a hospital and you can usually hear a pin drop for that 2 minutes! Then the services and such at the nearest weekend.
      It really brings it home how lucky we are to have people willing to hold that line for us. Irrespective of politics or country I think.

    • @Oldsmokey1

      That's exactly why we have veterans day as well. They tried to change it one time to some time in October but the public would have none of it and it was moved back to Nov 11th for good. But yeah the end of WW1 and honoring all the men and women that fought in WW1 is why it started but kinds morphed into this remembering all veterans. Thanks for watching btw.

      My grandpa didn't talk so much to me but with his buddies from the war in the VFW or American Legion. He would take me all the time to both and we'd pull tip boards, play pool, shuffle board, and ping pong. He taught me how to play pool at like 4 or 5 years old I'd say.

      My Grandad was in the BEF and he was so shellshocked he was invalided out of the army and was put to pulling out bodies in the London blitz. My Great Uncle went down with his ship in the North Atlantic delivering supplies to Russia. I come from a military family so I have a certain connection with your Grandpa. I myself served as a Royal Marine for eleven years Smokey. Hell even my mother was a telex operator in the WRAF ( Womans Royal Air Force). So the next time you visit your Grandpa's grave, lay a flower for me mate and tell him that every decent British person thanks him for his help in freeing the world from tyranny. I also thank you my friend for the video. I'm suffering from severe mental health issues, not connected with my service, something else entirely, but still extremely destructive. Thank's mate as we say in the UK.

    Awesome stuff man!
    Great dedication to your grandfather! I know too well how hard it is to get medals for a family member after the fact.... my grandfather fought with the British Royal Navy from 1940-1946 and served mostly in the Atlantic but did serve on the Gibraltar station for a period of time, so he should have received the Mediterranean Star, but never did.
    Trying to get that rectified when all the official records are "across the pond" in the UK is not easy.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  6 років тому +1

      I can imagine but he fought for all the time I was alive with him to get the ones he got and they owe him alot more. I can show you the hand written note they sent him with the last one he got and they Apologize for how long it took then they ask for money for the postage for shipping it to him. Stupid stuff. They should have never said shit since it took them 50 years or so to get them to him.

    • @BTemple
      @BTemple 6 років тому

      Oldsmokey Lay your life on the line for your country and they can't even properly commemorate it or acknowledge it... and THEN ask for you to pay postage. Boggles the mind.
      It's of course even harder to do this stuff after they have died and my grandmother has died too, so then there's the question of what family member is entitled to the new medals we might get.

    Great videos mate!
    If I could give you an advice... Maybe it would be really good if you would tell us about what wars and climates the rations were used for and why they would need what is in the rations. Also maybe there are images and videos of soldiers actually using them. And maybe even some background music from the year the ration was from. That would be an awesome addition to an allready awesome concept!
    Maybe you have already thought of these things and it isnt doable or maybe there are copyright issues, but I just wanted to share my thoughts.
    Keep it going! Doing a great job!
    Greetings from The Netherlands.

    Old Smokey,
    1st of all I really really appreciate your channel and content. I also had a Grandfather in WW2 in the Army Air Corps as a mechanic and think it would be amazing to some day try some MRE's he might have experienced. He left me a huge bullet lighter he made in England during the war. He smoked cigarettes then, as Im sure most did, and now being quite into pipe tobacco, as well as my years of interest in WW2 history, I have been itching to try those Chelsea cigarettes made by Edgeworth. Edgeworth slices were a pipe tobacco I always wanted to try as well, but I find myself being poor at locating either without paying hundreds of $'s. Ive been watching these MRE videos since 2017 when I was layed up with several spinal surgeries, and just can't get enough of these! Perhaps could you help me in acquiring at least a 3 pack of those Chelsea cigarettes that are in good shape? I figured if anyone would know, it would be Old Smokey! God bless!

Horrendous nightmares and him screaming in German. He was a great man until the end when cancer took him. My dad also served but wasn’t in the war. He was in tank division. The handle under that tape is most likely leather, as they aged, a lot of them started to dry out and chunks would fall off, I have two originals, both leather handled, luckily the handle on one is still in pretty good shape, the other had some of the washers dry out and some fell apart, so the handle was wrapped in rawhide. He probably wrapped it in electrical tape to keep the handle from falling apart, most likely he used that bayonet after he came home, after all, he used it while in the service for everything from opening boxes and cans, to cleaning his fingernails and fighting with it, so it was a tool to be used. These days things like that are looked at as collectors items and no one would think of using them the way they were used at that time. Nice video by the way.

    Hey Oldsmokey, I have a story to share if you’re interested.
    My grandfather passed away earlier this year, just a week after he turned 92. He was drafted in WWII at the age of 19 with his best friend. He served in the Navy and was a radar and communications officer and he ran the communications for his fleet when they were deployed to the pacific during the height of the war. He served from 1942-1945.
    After he passed we went through his military records and belongings, and we found out he was in Japan just after they dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He went into Japan after Nagasaki and Japan surrendered. In fact he has memorabilia with items labeled “occupied Japan”.
    But yes, he set foot in Nagasaki just days after the bomb was dropped. I can’t imagine what he saw first hand, he does have photographs from Nagasaki, so we’re holding onto them. But hearing your story about your grandfather was awesome, what they went through, none of us can even begin to imagine it.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  6 років тому +1

      I'd say my grandpa's story was very similar. I think he stayed in and went to Japan or Korea as well. But he died on his 70th birthday. He was roofing the house and walking up a hill to take a break and he fell over with a heart attack. He passed rigjt them and there. Which he did have a pace maker which I was always fascinated with. He had this thing that hooked to the phone and he'd call Chicago and hook himself to that phone machine to check his heart. That and he was shit twice in 2 separate occasions and returned to the fight both times after healing for a short period of time. Once in the chest and once in the wrist. The one in the wrist he covered with his watch kinda turned to the inside of his wrist.

    • @10191927

      Oldsmokey - My grandfather died of a severe stroke and a heart attack in his sleep. When he was 75 he had a heart attack and had triple bypass surgery. The surgeon gave him only five years, but he doubled his years and had 17 good years.
      We didn’t know that he was in the stages of heart failure though, he didn’t tell us. We believe that the last few times he saw his cardiologist he was probably only given 6-12 months to live. Because his doctor had dropped his heart medicine down to a maintenance dose, which is prescribed for patients in the stages of heart failure. So it was inevitable.
      He had a damaged portion of his heart, so he only had about a 75% good heart. The other part that wasn’t worked on, the surgeon said it was so bad he couldn’t operate on it so he had to leave it alone, but he made a full recovery and changed his lifestyle and was very active, healthy, and did a lot. So he was very strong and never complained even until the end.

      I'm not sure. I was like 12 when he passed. I need to try to get some info on what exactly he did. Maybe I can tell a real story some day. I know he was shot twice on two separate occasions and returned to the fight but I'm not sure exactly where all he was. I know he was in when the war started and was in long after it was over.
