কাছাকাছি সিনেমা হলে বহুরুপী আসেনি। কিন্তু ইউটিউবে এর গান তিনটি শোনা যেন নেশার মতো পেয়ে বসেছে। অগণিত বার শুনলাম। পুরানো হচ্ছে না। আর গানের সঙ্গে চরিত্র গুলোর উপস্থাপনা অনবদ্য।

Okay, after getting hooked on Tui Amar Hoye Ja from Bohurupi even before I'd watched the film (which is a must-watch, by the way) and contributing to possibly 99% of the unfairly, hilariously low number of views it's getting on UA-cam, I can't help but point out why this song works so well. It's been practically on loop on my computer, on my phone, inside the 4-wheelers on the way to different places, and no one around me has even complained, really. So why is this song significant: Art is subjective af but imo this is the best song in Tollywood in decades and introduces 2 phenoms that I think will contribute to re-building the glory of Tollywood in the coming decades when the political dust settles and our economy recovers: First is Mr. Arnab Dutta the composer and the male vocalist in the song whom I'm counting here for the composition, especially the melody he has come up with for the chorus and the 2nd antara for the female vocalist. Second is the female vocalist herself Ms. Shrestha D. who has sung all the best songs in Bohurupi and is my current favorite in Tollywood by a mile. She brings the best of the aspects of Lagnajita Chakraborty, Sahana Bajpaie, Madhubanti Bagchi, Niall Quinn, Joan Baez, Parvathy Baul in one package. Was pleasantly surprised to learn later that she in fact is a Jazz vocalist! First heard her in the superhit Dakatiya Banshi of course and loved her dynamic harmonies in the antara of that song which were in contrast with the powerful lead vocals in the chorus. But it still wasn't out of this world. That song does work only because of her voice texture and the arrangement though. But then I hear Tui Amar Hoye Ja, first thing on a Saturday morning after a nightstay at a friend's place, drowsy and uncomfortable. I saw it had been released some hours back and I clicked on it mainly cuz I'd been excited about the film since journalist Deep Halder had written and spoken about it on ThePrint ( I usually watch about one Bengali film in 2-3 years). So then my addiction to the song begins. Now why DOES the song work: 1> The gamaks in the percussions in the very beginning. 2> Female vocals enter with a child-like vibe. 3> The absolute genius decision of the arranger Bonnie Chakraborty (Bangla band cult hero) or programmer Sudipto Paul (who maintained the absolutely beautiful and sleek texture for the song) to build up the bridge with a fast string run but then stop it when the chorus does enter as opposed to the Jatin - Lalit era where the string line would have gone on to show off every synthesizer lesson one received growing up in the rest of the chorus (there was a time and place for that as well of course, I am a big fan of Jatin - Lalit) but that build up sort of takes you up a mountain and pushes you off an edge to make you fly as the chorus enters with the minimalist punch. 4> Then the masterstroke of the composition itself. The song is in C# and when the chord progression hits B major -> F major -> C major, that's some eargasm right there. That progression ALWAYS works. From Hans Zimmer to Ajay - Atul have all used that to elevate their pieces. 5> Masterstroke 2: Hitting that F minor at the end of the chorus. 2nd eargasm. 6> The first Sarangi solo by Mr. Alla Rakha Kalavant when he slurs a giant legato leap from the F note directly down to the A note omg!!!! Sort of throws you deep into an abyss but then immediately lifts you up. 7> Masterstroke 3: "Sanjher Gogono Majhe" begins with that F minor and my 3rd eargasm hits. 8> Genius Masterstroke 4: 2nd time around, the chorus has a harmony by the female vocals BUT ONLY in the 1st and 3rd lines and that works like a charm and I have a hunch why. 1st line harmony works as a surprise i.e. "See you didn't get an harmony in the first chorus but here's one now, isn't that even better!" Then you immediately miss it when it disappears in the next line but then comes back for a 2nd surprise to end the chorus with the harmony. So instead of 1 surprise and a harmony in the entire chorus, you get 2 surprises which hooks you more into the song. 9> The 2nd antara begins a new era in female singing in Tollywood. The thing with Shrestha D. is, her pronunciation has that slight child like vibe like Lagnajita - Sahana Bajpaie but its all too subtle so you as a lay audience, sub-consciously feel an intimacy with the character on screen because of her voice, without distracting you with the child likeness of the vocals. But then she impresses more with her delivery, throw of each word, drilling them into your ear, and this is important cuz for some reason, my brain only focusses on the arrangement ever since I was a child and only a few vocalists like Nachiketa, Rupam Islam, Tamal Kanti Halder, Krishanu Banerjee ever get the lyrics into my ears. When she delivers "সব প্রশ্নর থেকে তারই আমি উত্তর হতে পারি, পাই ডাক যদি আমার নাম ধরে", it totally resonates. 10> A few masterstroke things Shrestha D. does from here on in this section for which the composer also deserves credit: a) Her delivery of the amazing melody in the lines in "পাই ডাক যদি আমার নাম ধরে" & "ফেলে থাকতে পারবো না কোনোমতে" b) The way she enters "Tumi Haat Ta Chhuyo" especially the delivery of the "Haat ta", again eargasm. c) Focussed lyrical ear drilling again in "সব সত্যি করো, আর রঙে রঙে" d) Beautiful harmony in "আর রঙে রঙে রাঙ্গিয়ে দিও জীবন". 11> It should be obvious to everyone that a song of this caliber wouldn't work unless the mix was top-notch, done by Mr. Saibal Karmakar who also deserves credit for the sleek, shiny texture of the song. My only criticism: That gap between "নাম ধরে" and "চলবো সেই পথের সাথে" was an unfortunate screw up by whoever was the recording engineer I think, because that's some low level artificial punch-in, whereas ideally the vocalist should have stopped at নাম ধরে in a way that as if she's about to enter চলবো সেই. These are all too common in the majority of the songs of Tollywood 85% of which is horseshit but very jarring and unacceptable when the rest of the song has gotten stuck in your ears like Knaathaler Atha.
