These are my modifications to the 3 most popular models of chicken tractors, including those designed by Joel Salatin, John Suscovich (Stress Free Chicken Tractor), and Justin Rhodes (Chickshaw). All of these mods make these chicken tractors easier and more efficient to make and use in the field.

Awesome, thanks! For long moves or on very thick/tall grass, using a wheeled dolly (like the one Joel Salatin uses) is very helpful. I’m also considering a Chicklift type wheel system to make it easier for my wife to move, but it’s hard to beat the simplicity of these skids for general purpose. No dolly or wheels to lose, just pick up the front & move it.
I just stumbled upon this video. I am impressed! I like the improvements to the chicken tractor but I must say I am absolutely fascinated by the spring loaded splitting tool! I want one! I also just downloaded the 60 minute homestead layout course. I think the Handy Homesteader is going to be a new favorite channel for me. Thank you for sharing your homestead journey. Peace.

Sometimes, the simple things are genius. I'm going to strongly consider the safety screws under the milk crates. As you said, I think it allows you to keep the bottom of those crates clear and open for waste to pass through while preventing the box from falling down. Great job!

I'm looking to build one for meat chicken I live in north Dakota and we get high winds how do think it would handle those or should I drive anchors when I move it?

Go ahead and try it, but if you want to curve the PVC at the ends at all you’ll have to do that with heat very carefully, instead of using glue-on elbows. Because any elbows or couplers will introduce joints that will create drag points, probably more or less negating any slipperiness you were trying to introduce to the bottom of the runners.
Plus any rocks, gravel, or sand you drag this thing over will wear that PVC out much much faster than this steel conduit. Sunlight also breaks down PVC over time & it’ll get brittle.
These skids have been on my chicken tractors for for 3 years now, including sitting outside in the mud and snow, and even under deep bedding (lots of animal poop & hay mulch) for months on end, and still only a small amount of rust.

I came from the trades and have a lot of leftovers I can utilize with out having to repurchase anything and I think the greenlee will be able to heat and bend the 1.25 inch pvc i have... i harvested 4 pine trees from behind the house about 2 years ago and it has been stacked in the loft of the barn so should be good to go i have wire and even the tarp the only thing i my have to purchase will be hinges ...and the wife wonders why i hang on to all my stuff lol thanks for the inspiration @@TomWylie
After two years since you originally posted this video do you still recommend using the conduit skids? Any problems or improvements made to them?
They are still working great! When I’m just moving it the distance of one or two chicken tractor lengths I just pull it on the skids. When I go much longer distances, or over any rough terrain, I put my Joel Salatin style dollie under the backend to make it roll easier.

Where would you put nest boxes and what type would you use
I use old milk crates that I have cut one side out of, and just line the bottom with hay or straw, just like Justin Rhodes does in his Chickshaw. There was a clip of those in this video inside that other rectangular chicken tractor. Inside the Suscovich chicken tractor I mount those milk crates to the back wall, the end opposite the front door. I would like to modify it so I can access those milk crates from the outside, but just haven’t gotten to it yet.
Just curious if this would withstand roaming dogs, coyotes, possums, raccoons all very prevalent in my area
It did great for years in an area that had a lot of predators around, but not a ton directly on our property. Then we finally had a raccoon family come on property and even though they didn’t bust through anywhere, a raccoon was able to reach underneath the chicken tractor through a small dip in the ground, and killed several of our chickens by grabbing onto their legs. So now I keep an electric poultry net around the chicken tractors as well.

They are made for both 1/2 & 3/4 pipe at different degrees of bend.
