  • For the past 37 years, the annual Richard Tucker Award has been granted to an American singer poised on the edge of a major national and international career, with a list of winners that reads like a who’s who of international opera stars.
This year’s recipient, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, has been described by The Guardian as “a great artist, no question, with an imperturbable steadiness of tone, and a nobility of utterance that invites comparison not so much with her contemporaries as with mid-20th century greats such as Kirsten Flagstad.” Some of her 15-16 highlights include debuts with the Seattle Opera and Royal Opera House (Nabucco); LA Opera (Norma), and Washington National Opera (Götterdämmerung). In a preview to the November 1 Richard Tucker Gala, WQXR presents an exclusive performance and conversation with Ms. Barton.
