      A donde vive Mari? There are, certainly, changes that I would make in a second build but I was, and continue to be, quite pleased with the result of the first build. By keeping the diameters of the domes fairly small the results are easier to achieve. A Birdcage Dome would be better for larger diameter domes and a ferro-cement vault structure might be, in the end, the best way to go. Either way, a "cement" roof with an arch/dome shape is so very much cooler and quieter. Thanks.

    Super cool. I have been interested in Dome homes for many years - so cool to see how you did this one. I am in the process of starting up some projects in Nicaragua, I chose to go the Monolithic ecoshell route, with an airform and balsat rebar for centuries of longevity. Thanks for the video

      Ohh, well I am looking forward to hear how you are going to take appropriate action once you give it another shot. Keep me updated mate. I bought some small land few years back close to popoyo. Haven't started doing something with the land just yet , after I get finance right and upskilling myself I will start creating heaven and purifying the area . Yew. Have you got channel?

    a. Mortar mix was similar to any used by local block layers. Likely about a 3:1. My masons did what they knew.
    b. Roof is a plexiglass ... not a glass. I would, for other buildings use a clear roofing (they have clear panels that match the profile of normal metal roofing) ... way cheaper.
    c. Didn't use rebar except at the top - 1/4" to hold the blocks up until the ring was complete. Once each ring was complete, compression took over.

    Did you use spray foam, balsat rebar, and shotcrete to make it well insulated from the elements from the inside? And the balsat rebar and shotcrete will make it last for up to 500-1,000 years with the proper maintenance.

    How does the natural air conditioning work? Is it open around the top under the plexiglass?
    I did some maths, and looked into the cost of concrete brick in my area. The bricks for a 30' diameter dome would only cost $2,000. Not bad for a house. I could certainly see it only costing the quoted $7,000.

    • @bryanbutler4882
      @bryanbutler4882  5 років тому

      There is an opening at the top so air can flow freely from the inside. As well, the shape of the dome aids in a suction being created by wind flowing over the top.

    • @bryanbutler6326
      @bryanbutler6326 7 років тому +4

      Certainly. I have done lots of study and thinking since this was made. On the one hand, it is proving to be great as it is. On the other, I have been looking at a way to make domes with adobe ... smaller individual domes but cheaper and able to be made with local materials. As well, I have been studying vaults ... (see Nubian Vault Construction). These would allow a traditional "square" base with a solid roof (I think ferro-cement would work very well). Contact me on facebook and I can send you information.

    How do you get the dome shape?

    • @bryanbutler4882
      @bryanbutler4882  5 років тому

      It is a simple process - an arm set on a central post is used to measure each block. As you go up, the arm naturally follows the curve (arch.)

      So the bricks aren’t different shapes then?
      With no keystone, why doesn’t it collapse inwards?

    • @bryanbutler4882
      @bryanbutler4882  5 років тому +1

      @@fainitesbarley2245 The compression of each course acts in the same manner as a keystone. So, in a way, each block acts as a keystone. Towards the top, there is some shaping of the blocks to make them fit the angle of the slope.

      There are other dome styles, such as the birdcage dome, which would work for that. The smaller domes allow a family to build one room at a time as they have the money and time. It is also easier for small DIY construction.
