Is there a recommendation of wet wipes to use? I've tried 2 or so different brands but they dont have the fibrous effect you show. Are they specifically a cotton cleaning one or some sort of flushable?
I've heard that from a couple guys. I'm going to have to make a video testing out a bunch of different options. I'm using pampers baby wipes, just because that's where we're at in life.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I left them out overnight, but I'd imagine a couple hours would do it. You could also hit them with a hairdryer to speed it up.
I take it off right away. Do make sure your wipe is dry and you have it right against the base. Also, multiple light passes come out better than one thick coat as that may bleed under the fibers.
No, I make sure I don't super saturate the wipe and then within a couple seconds after I'll pull it off. If you wait too long it'll try to bond and then you may end up with fibers left on the base.
I can't find a wipe that stretches like that. What brand did you use? All of the ones I find tear like paper when stretched. They don't have a cotton texture that the fibers can separate on.
Really nice tutorial, cheers, only advice I would add to this is if you have shakey hands try a thin black oil touched into those grooves or panel liner to add those lines for the tiles . Thanks 🙏

Sorry, I have one more question.... So... I have custom bases that I had made for my Custodes... they are a cathedral mosaic type, which would be amazing for this effect...the only problem is, there are LOTS of "grout" groove areas.... do you have any suggestions on how to fill those groove areas in? I know you line yours, but i feel like maybe using a wash and wiping down the smooth surface after, letting the wash sit in the grooves might be the way I have to go. Just asking, because I trust you, I love this video!
It's my pleasure, love talking about this. I'd use a gloss coat to seal the base, could be a spray can or airbrushed. Then you can do exactly what you're saying, mix up a thicker more concentrated wash and use a brush to drag it along the cracks. After giving it a couple minutes to semi set you can come in with a damp q tip and get all the raised areas around the crack. Alternately, if it's a ton of lines you can run the wash across the entire surface and then use a cloth to clean all the flat raised sections.

Yeah, you could use it on models. The trick is getting the sheet tight against the surface of the model. It works better on larger flatter areas, things like marine shoulder pads.
@@LaminatedPigeon Are you leaving it on and letting it dry or taking it off immediately after spraying? It should come off right after you spray. If that's not the issue it might be the kind of wipe being used.
This is amazing! Those bases look incredible. My army is based with a lava theme but after seeing this I’d probably consider giving it a try if I start a new army!
So I tried this and it made a massive mess as all the threads of the wipe got stuck in the paint. Is the trick to take it off super fast? Or our wipes just made different?
You want to spray it and remove the wipe before the paint had a chance to dry. If it dries it'll bins the fibers to the base. Wipe brands may also make a difference.
You should be able to get 10-15 base done with a sheet. Just make sure that you're using different parts of the sheet and letting it dry before putting it down on the next base.
It's my pleasure, I love sharing the hobby. I wanted to get into sisters as my second army but ended up going custodes because I could do an entire jet bike army 🙃. I had thought that if you could make a stencil of the sisters symbol you could air brush it onto random tiles. May be a cool look.

appreciate the offer! stumbled across a packet of pampers sensitive wet wipes and they appear to be the magic bullet! woohoo marble time~ love this look :)
unpopular opinion: i don't like basing, hear me out. i feel like a beautiful base is like a miniature diorama, it tells a story and paints a broader picture of the unit and its history and looks incredible displayed on shelves, giving the entire army a unified look. BUT; it really destroys any immersion i feel when playing a game when the based of the models are in stark contrast to the battle mat/ arena. units with beautiful fluffy green grass while battling upon a dusty dry red field is off putting to me. i feel like clear acrylic would be ideal, allowing us to see the ground under the unit nut baring that i feel like bases should be more abstract. TL:DR this is my new favorite way to make bases for any army and i'm going to go crazy with it lol
🥰🥰🥰🥰 I completely understand that and have been a fan of clear bases for a while. Unfortunately a lot of people can't really wrap their head around it as it's not the GW way.
Not so unpopular... i do like not over decorated bases either, or those too big, because i like miniatures to play, not to expose in a shelf. For this reason, brown sand, some little rocks and... enough for me. BUT sometimes i love overdecorated bases in some models, mainly in those thematic as the ones included en some boargames (marvel united, for example) and the easy-to-build range from GW. In this moment, some paint styles as this one of the marble, can ve very helpful ^_^
This is by far the best execution of the marble bases. Surprised that it isn't the top video for the subject considering how mid the others are.

I've got some Custodes sitting around that I intend to do the same with.
@@OriginPainting brilliant, appreciate the reply ! Have a great weekend 👍👍
Absolutely, any other issues feel free to ask.
Would a dryer sheet work the same as the disinfectant wipe? Got a bunch of dryer sheets I'm not using anymore
I think you could probably make it work. I would try to get a used one or wash one off and dry it out first. That should prevent any powder/chemical from the sheet getting on your models.
@@OriginPainting I actually tried this out last night, didn't work, was too rigid even after getting it wet. Oh well, was worth a shot and I have a bunch of extra disinfectant wipes. Also, you got a link for that scoring tool you used?
@@hannahdawg6829 that's good to know. Sorry it didn't work out, but thanks for letting me know so I can pass that on to others that ask. I'll see if it lets me send the link here.

@@OriginPainting awesome, thank you! I've been making the "tiles" using plasticard but I want to try this method too
@@hannahdawg6829 you can use it by pushing away from you to cut a straighter line and then pull back towards you along the line to remove a little more material. When I tried to pull towards me first it kept trying to go off course because of the angle of the blade.
Anyone have good recommendations for a cloth to use here? Any of the cleaning wipes i have tried just rip when attempting to stretch to the desired effect. Even went as far as to try out some leftover halloween spider web decorations but they didnt really turn out all that well to be honest.
I've found pampers baby wipes have been pretty good with the material they use. Unfortunately they are always changing what they use in the wipes.
Nice
Thanks!
Why do you make me want to rebase my entire army right after I buy more crackle paste >< Seriously though this is amazing stuff
Im sorry, I wasn't fast enough!!!
Crackle is a great way to go as well though.
@@OriginPainting Definitely doing a test base to see what it looks like anyway - thanks!
Damn that looks incredible, Pity it doesn't work without the airbrush
I'll be trying it soon with spray cans. It should work as long as you have the correct distance between the base and the can.
Now i just need that mi friends lets me his aero...
Having friends with tools is really helpful, hope it works out.
Really cool effect and great tutorial. Both are good, but the first method was the best for me :)
Yep, I agree with you, I think that physical line is great.
The scribed lines look great and I think I’ll use this method when I get some more new models
I'm really glad it inspired you.
Welp, I know what my Custodes are going to be standing on when they're finished...
If you have any questions along the way shoot me a message!
@@OriginPainting I should be find, your instructions are perfect. The trick will be finding a santizing wipe that stretches just right...
I am having an issue with my bases sliding when trying to keep a straight edge with the scribing tool.
You can use some sticky tack to help hold them still. Hopefully that'll help.
@@OriginPainting Thanks, I cut up a rubber matte, working great now.
Is there a way to do this without airbrush?
You should be able to do it with a black and white spray can. Just make sure to not flood the base or it will get under the fibers.
I want to do an entire imperial knight with marble armour
I've really wanted to try this on knight armor panels and tanks. It should work well, let me know how it goes.
@@OriginPainting If I get round to it I'll make sure to tell you!
Can you do this on models aswell?
Yeah, you could use it on models. The trick is getting the sheet tight against the surface of the model. It works better on larger flatter areas, things like marine shoulder pads.
@@OriginPainting ah ok thanks, I’ll have a go
@@OriginPainting all the fibres get stuck to the model, I do not know why
@@LaminatedPigeon Are you leaving it on and letting it dry or taking it off immediately after spraying? It should come off right after you spray. If that's not the issue it might be the kind of wipe being used.
@@OriginPainting ah, I’ll try a different wipe, thanks!
This is amazing! Those bases look incredible. My army is based with a lava theme but after seeing this I’d probably consider giving it a try if I start a new army!
I like lava bases, so much character in them. Starting a second army was a great excuse for me to get away from my dirt, rock strewn bases of old.
@@OriginPainting would be great to see a video on how you do your lava bases!
@@thegreatangel8251 that would be a fun one, I'll add it to the list! 😁
How often are you switching out the sheet?
You should be able to get 10-15 base done with a sheet. Just make sure that you're using different parts of the sheet and letting it dry before putting it down on the next base.
@@OriginPainting Thanks. I'm about to do an entire sisters army so the ease of this will be super helpful.
@@OriginPainting I have the green stuff world roller that does tiles and has like fleur de lys and stuff on it. I'm hoping they turn out pretty sweet with the marble paint job.
i've tried two different kinds of wet wipes now and both of them just tear when pulled at all.. before i spend all my money buying random brands of wet wipes- anyone in the uk found success with any specific wipes?
If no one gets you an answer message me and I'll get a dozen or so hard your way.
appreciate the offer! stumbled across a packet of pampers sensitive wet wipes and they appear to be the magic bullet! woohoo marble time~ love this look :)
👏👏👏
Hope it helps you out, let me know if you try it.
unpopular opinion: i don't like basing, hear me out. i feel like a beautiful base is like a miniature diorama, it tells a story and paints a broader picture of the unit and its history and looks incredible displayed on shelves, giving the entire army a unified look. BUT;
it really destroys any immersion i feel when playing a game when the based of the models are in stark contrast to the battle mat/ arena. units with beautiful fluffy green grass while battling upon a dusty dry red field is off putting to me. i feel like clear acrylic would be ideal, allowing us to see the ground under the unit nut baring that i feel like bases should be more abstract.
TL:DR this is my new favorite way to make bases for any army and i'm going to go crazy with it lol
🥰🥰🥰🥰
I completely understand that and have been a fan of clear bases for a while.
Guess I need an air brush since the sponge didn't work :')
That or some good old rattle cans 😉
If you have another way to do Marble bases that is simpler please link it below so we can all get the most out of our hobby time!
I haveproblem that the desinfectant sheets just rip instead of creating those little holes :/
It sounds like a lot of cleaning wipes use a different material. I settled on pampers wipes if you can find some of those.
thanks for the advice =)@@OriginPainting
@@Gomorra1989 you're welcome I hope it helps.
I'm having a hard time getting this right
Bummer, which part is giving you difficulty? Im more than happy to talk through it with you.
Thank God for this tutorial because the other million that are exactly the same as this one weren't enough..
Do the others scribe the bases to give you a better looking tile? Their might be one out there, but if so I haven't seen them.
