I am running a Dimebucker through a Behringer EQ700 which goes into a Behringer PEQ2200 and my noisegate can’t handle it, LOL! 😂😂😂
Everything goes into a Randall RH200, Gain 2 channel.
I have to admit, the sound is absolutey killer when playing!
I have to finetune it more, but you can already hear that specific Dimebag roar in there. 🤘

I can actually explain why the Silver one is louder, it's because of the low noise floor. The blue and black MXR eq pedals were notorious for their noise and hiss, so a low noise mod, known as the "Silent Night" mod became popular, as not only would the noise be reduced, but the pedal would actually become more efficient and have more output. The silver MXR eqs, both the 6 band and 10 band (I have the 10 band) are the modern design which has the low noise floor as standard, along with True Bypass. That's why the Silver EQ is louder and frankly better.

    • @russellzauner
      @russellzauner 5 років тому +12

Okay, thought I was really super haf but thanks for confirming, as I also thought the silver was somehow, inexplicably, different *and* better as well. The little bit of additional dynamic range really reflects further down the signal change it goes. I was actually thinking at first that they cleaned up some of the circuitry and improved it, but then the actual DI signal comparison made it looked like the old pedal was compressing it somehow (no clipping, but whole signal is either pushed down or somehow attenuated in average amplitude levels) but I like your explanation in that it teaches me some history along with the physics/science of amplification and signal shaping in a practical and controlled setting. I bet the bypass on the silver eq is pretty clean as well...since it's now got a switch.

    • @Frankt1100

I have to say I thought the silver sounded a bit fuller than the blue but I put it down to my imagination. Glad I'm not going completely senile

Through my stereo, not of great quality, the silver version sounds better but a little darker, and there were hints of treble in the blue that the silver didn't provide. Just me?

Vinnie La Bella (Exhorder) told me when I was hanging out with him after a concert that Dime, and him were friends back in the day, and he told Dime how to set his EQ with the Smile/Frown settings. He also told me he felt bad for not making up with Dime before he was killed. He told me that they grew distant through the 90's, due to reasons, etc. Anyway... Just thought it was cool what he told me. He even told me how to set the EQ, and the history behind it, etc. He basically told me the Exhorder guitar EQ settings. It was quite the experience. In the video I noticed that the 800 isn't maxed out. If I heard right Vinnie told me it's to be maxed out, and then frown from there. I honestly can't remember much beyond that. That's if I even heard that right. I'll ask him if I get a hold of him.
Marzi Montazeri (Exhorder) told me about a cool Solar guitar he's getting here in about a month roughly(?); he used two during the concert I was at. He even showed me the picture of it on his phone. All I'll say is it's white without the usual Solar logo. Good stuff. The venue locked him out on accident, and I went through it to open the door for him not knowing who is was at the time. Funny how things work out sometimes. I also got a special stage dropped guitar pick. From what Vinnie told me, Marzi hasn't dropped a pick since he was 16.
A picture I took at the concert of Marzi, and his Solar Guitar (Kataklysm Meditations Tour): scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/70409005_2394614510575500_8913861596694970368_o.jpg?_nc_cat=102&_nc_oc=AQkdrK8YIVkfLMXZoUK_Oq8kP-m8t-YxchFYMGD0l3iidBChaK8nQxF21p8cEtNIIdY&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=98256b2bcf5cfdf0eb3fcc5b9f958946&oe=5E136B9E

Awesome video, I’ve had this question in my head for years. The “DIME” line of amps that Grady Champion collaborated on are awesome, they were pretty cheap originally too. I found one used and it sounds better than any heavy tone amp I’ve ever played, including the Warhead 2x12 combo I had. If you’re a Dime tone chaser you need to get that amp!!

I'm pretty sure even with 2 blue units (or 2 silver units) the difference would be equal to this one... In each pedal of the same model you can't test each resistors, each capacitors or even each switch and wires resistances, especially with mass production, so you are pretty sure to have a little audible difference!

Thats good to see if the gear has changed for the better or worse (i.e. Tube screamers, metal zone, waza mod, etc.). I play in a Pantera cover band (Trendkill Revolution) but unfortunately I have not invested in the old style rig cause of costs and hunting for the gear. Maybe I can profile a patch at some point when I get a Kemper. BTW, it was cool meeting and trying out your gear at NAMM. Cheers.

Ola thanx for the test comparison. I never liked the old MXR blue one because you couldn't switch it off. I used have a DoD 6 band and it was great. It took all the harshness out of my Mesa Boogie Mark 1, when switched on. Sorry I got rid of that amp. I bought one of the silver MXR's to add on my board which is all MXR effects.

7:42 I freakin love that kind of test!! I would pass all my free days doing theses kind of GEARTEst!!
I think this how we can forge our proper sound by testing all theses myths in the gear addict area!!
Even if I wasn't looking for a EQ pedal, I find your video interesting and very instructive, particularly the moment with the eq reamping process!

Saw this vid, set my MXR to as close as I could in still frames... And haven't changed it since.
That was about when this vid was released
The settings are GOLD, that exaggerated mids "bell curve". Workds FANTASTIC for cleans and trying to chase that "Dumble-esque" tone
EQ>Compression>Drive (Transparent to Low/ Mid)>Reverb is "Dumble With Pedals"

I thought the two pedals were SUPER close in sound/tone. However..., I thought the silver one was a bit more “open” sounding(clearer?) in the high end.
    Great demo, Ola!!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Hi Ola. Excellent video, very useful ! Could you make some a complete video about reamping please ? But very complete... How to plug each wire, which sound card, how to connect the amp... It would be amazing... 😊👌👍
