Surely one of the finest love songs ever. Sung in a marvellous setting by such talented singers and musicians

I met Tomás on a visit to Carraroe many years ago, we got talking and he sang this for me, I recognised the air of The Mingulay Boat Song and he told me the story of the beautiful girl he'd loved from afar, the poem he'd written and the beautiful Scottish air he had put it to. A lovely man with a generous spirit.

I'm mostly Irish by descent so it's almost instinctual to listen to music like this and create vivid imagery of being in a small town where you walk to the pub nightly just to hear what they're playing.

Every time I hear this, I think of the currachs racing over the tide, the oars moving in time with the tune. So evocative.

Ireland has not got a large army or weapons of mass destruction, Ireland and its people have never invaded any other country and declared war on its people and has never steel and plundered from others, but Ireland is sinking with that vast number of most brilliant musicians, singers, singers' writers players poets' storytellers.

It would have been wonderful to have been in Dougie's house that day.

I know this as a pipe tune, "The Mingulay Boat Song" - great 9/8 ! I recognise Dougie MacLean there, on guitar.

I so like this. Upstairs in my loft there is an old VCR recorder and big storage boxes of video cassettes and audio cassettes . Amongst them is this gem. Before the days when I could watch them in England, my sister Cathie recorded them for me in Scotland from the BBC, STV or Tara and sent them down. When visiting Scotland and in particular, Aros in Skye. I used to stock up too..... and yes I have many of the recordings from the early seventies onwards. Include Runrig and Mac- Talla :-)

GRMA as an físeán seo a phóstáil anseo. Tá mé an-bhuíoch go deo as. báil ó Dhia ar Thomás Mac Eoin agus ar a ghrá geal. Tá sé go hiontach Arthur Cormack a fheiceáil - is a chloisteáil! Caithfidh mé éisteacht le níos mó uaidh.

Why do they spell cailin with an H? I know they put in h instead of accents in some words but it isn't required in that word. It's a lovely song.
