Agreed. Terrifying sound to hear in the woods at night. Have only had the pleasure of hearing it once or twice - coincidentally less than a mile from where a neighbor witnessed a mountain lion come grab their 12 year old son by the neck off of their own porch and drag him away. Cant remember but I’m pretty sure the boy was fine, the parents came out and screamed and yelled until the cat dropped him. I’ve hunted out in that area for years. Big cat tracks. Never actually saw him. Im sure they saw me though

I live in Indiana and I heard this sound one night. The animal was walking around my yard. I looked out windows and couldn’t see it. I thought about going outside in order to identify it but it scared me enough that I am glad I didn’t. I few years later my neighbor caught several pictures of a mountain lion on their trail cam. I also found out the cats have been spotted for several years in the area. I am really glad I didn’t go outside.

So either 1 mountain lion travels a lot or there is more than 1. Furthermore Indiana is not as populated as most states with lots of forests and abundant wildlife.

Whenever it's after dark and you and your squad are gathered around the fire and you hear some shit like this out in the trees, you get to be the gigachad who goes, "It's a mountain lion. Sounds like it's trying to communicate. We stay close to the campsite and keep this fire going, we'll be fine."

And even though they may be physically inferior to African lions, tigers and most jaguars, they are still physically larger than leopards - the smallest of the pantheras. If a puma had you pinned to the ground with your neck in his jaws, would you still be thinking that this is a 'lesser cat' at that moment?

I remember the first time I heard a Mtn lion scream while we were out deer/hog hunting in California. I legit thought it was a lady screaming until my dad said, no, that’s a Mtn lion. I lived in California for most of my growing up years and hunted my whole life, and had never seen one. But hearing it and not seeing it was literally bone chilling. Then a few years ago, my family was out hunting and a Mtn lion was stalking a guy walking down a valley to flush out any possible deer. Luckily his hunting partners were watching him as he was coming down the Mtn, and noticed he was being being stalked, and only about 30 yards above him. His friends, although sketchy, shot in his direction to kill it before it was able to get him. I have always wanted to actually see one, just never in that sort of circumstance. Amazing creatures though.

All wild felines seem to be among the most elusive of creatures. I have spent most of my 66 years in the rural areas of Western Massachusetts. Over the years have seen many black bear, deer, moose and many other smaller forms of wildlife. But even though the bobcat population is considered to be relatively large in pretty much every state, i have only seen one in the wild. I would wager that both you and i have been seen hundreds of times by wild cats over the years of spending time in the woods.
