When my Daddy was young in the hills of Kentucky, he said people talked about wampus cats. My daddy said this was in the 1920's. He said they were scared, especially at nights. Your friend's story is very scary. Thank you Donnie fir bringing this to us. There are alot of strange things that are unexplained, and need to be passed down.
I've heard of the wampus here in NC...I was told they sound like a woman screaming..an awful sounding scream and they would come on people's porch and crawl their screen doors all up trying to get in...Scary stories about the wampus cat.
I live here in Washington State, and I came face to face with a cougar once, back in the early nineties. I lived on a dead end road off from a side road of a back road out in the small hills around here. I was walking down a remnant of an old logging road, alone, when the cat came into sight about 60 feet in front of me. This was in broad daylight so I could see it as plain as day. It hadn’t seen me yet, was walking across the path in front of me. I froze solid, hoping it wouldn’t see me. Then it turned and started walking right towards me, and that’s when it saw me. It hunched down on all fours and just studied me. I was frozen, not moving an eyelash, hoping it would go away. We stood there for several minutes just staring. I thought maybe if I just didn’t move it might think I was just a tree stump. But I didn’t know what I’d if it stood up and came toward me. I was downwind from it and figured it couldn’t smell me. Finally it stood up, turned, and walked off into the woods and underbrush without making a sound, not even a twig snap or a leaf. I couldn’t see it then, so I didn’t know if it kept on going or was circling around me or just sitting out there. The only thing I could think to do was look as big as I could, which isn’t that big for a 4 foot 11 woman. I picked up the biggest stick I could find near me and started waving it around and making as much noise as I could I was singing and hollering and I don’t even know what I said. I never saw it again, but I used to hear it sometimes at night just outside my home. It sounded like a woman screaming in terror. The first time I heard it I called up my neighbor and said did you hear that woman screaming and she started laughing. She said that was no human being, but a cougar. Fascinated me after that. So that’s my cougar story. I enjoy your stories Donnie. Sometimes they make me almost feel like I wish I’d grown up over there in the Appalachian mountains.
What a great story! Glad you are preserving these stories! There was an incident on a dairy farm near us one summer, around 1 a.m. I was reading and I heard the cows restless in the field and then I kind of a roar that literally would freeze your blood. It was nothing that belonged here; it was like something you'd hear on the plains of Africa. Made me think of a lion. You just knew, this is something that shouldn't be here. We found a calf torn apart the next morning. The roar was so loud you could hear it echoing in the valley. Not one dog barked. We never saw it, and I'm glad of that.
Yup, when the dogs don't bark, you know it's something funky creeping around. Mamaw always said, if the dogs don't bark, best not to nose, just say your prayers and go to sleep. Sound advice when living in the mountains. Thank you for sharing 😊!
Thanks for the stories! There's nothing better than looking up an old friend and talking all day, catching up.and hearing some of the old stories. Take care!
Thank you for these stories! I am terminally ill and I live to hear these stories, it gives me something to look forward to! I was an only child born to older parents, my Daddy was a WWII Vet, and I loved to hear stories from older folks! Thank you God bless! Patricia Gambino Harrington
Loved this video! ❤️ Anytime I was around my elders, growing up, my favorite thing to do was to listen to their old stories. Some were their own, and some were handed down. The stranger, the better, there was an element of truth and awe that was intriguing.
There's nothing more soothing than listening to you tell these truly interesting encounters.. and your voice makes it even more soothing.. thanks Donnie for giving us your time..
Mercy! This raised the hair up on the back of my neck listening to your friend. I believe every word he said because he lived it! My Dad was from the *knobs* of Gravel Switch Kentucky and there were a lot of townsfolk there that had similar stories. Just strange things you can't explain. I could sit and listen to you and your friend talk about anything, my friend. May God bless and keep you safe always. Be well. And believe!
Oh Donnie! I’m so glad you saw & spent time and tales of the past. You are absolutely correct about things being in the woods and we will never see or know about. Praying for continuing healing! Give your wonderful wife! Blessings always blessings. ❤️🙏😊
Some of the best gifts are stories passed down from the elders in our families. Things they have seen and heard from the hills and hollows. They did not make them up, they lived them. Some of the things were mysterious and scarry. There were things that can't be explained. Thank you Donnie for this great story, you keep Appalachia alive. Absolutely love your channel. ❤
Whatever is out there, you could be sure shooting that it has been here long before any of us were. Some can and cannot be explained and many spirit are out there also. I respect the spirits and the night animals for they have their place here. You are a good story teller and to talk to the old-timers about the past is refreshing. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.
I love listening to the wisdom from the elders. You can learn so much. My great aunt and then later my mother in law told me " don't go out at night the wood booger will get you." Thanks for sharing, Donnie!

Howdy Donnie- yessir, there’s things out there in the woods that you don’t know what is. We’ve had mountain lions in our yard. One night I went out and there was a black one sitting down on its haunches watching me. It went around through the woods and was still watching me. That time l removed a limb off the tree it was under just about two feet over it’s head. He disappeared and I went back to house. Thank you for sharing your friend with us. God bless
I used to hear stories from my grandmother about panthers being in those woods. She grew up in Campbell County, Tennessee. Love these old stories. Thanks Donnie and Big Foot. 😊
This was a great video! I wonder if that was a wood booger hollerin' at night. Spooky spooky! My parents used to tell us stories about painters (panthers). One of the old Firefox books has some good spooky stories like this too. Always love a good scare! Thank you and have a blessed day, Mr. Donnie.
Much respect for y'all and every outdoorsman who has true stories of unexplained experiences. You know what's normal and what isn't. Enjoyed this video very much. Thanks Donnie! God bless!
This was so good. I always loved your unexplained pictures and the stories you have with them. You really have great ones to show and tell. ❤ Please share more of them 🙏 I really enjoy your videos.
These unexplained videos are some of my favorites. I don't think mankind will ever fully understand the mysteries of these beautiful mountains. Nor do I think it's meant for us to understand. Thanks for another great video.
Straight Creek was where we had to haul the water from to my grandma’s house, right up the road from the dock! Brings back such happy memories for me, thank-you Donnie ❤
My husband's Grandfather worked for the Morehead and North Fork Railroad. At the time, they were digging the Clack Mountain train tunnel about 4-5 miles from his house which was on the banks of the Licking River. He walked to work starting about 4:30-5 AM and walked home well after dark. He said one night a big cat (he didn't know if it was a mountain lion or panther) started stalking him. He had an oil lamp (I guess railroad lantern) with him as the only light he ever used to walk to and from the job site in the dark. He said as long as he kept the lantern at shoulder level between him and the cat, it would back off and go around to the other side. He kept that lantern held at shoulder level passing it from his left hand to his right depending on which side the cat was on for (he estimated) 3 miles or so. He was so scared and tired when he got home he barely stand up or speak to tell the story. Of course jobs were hard to come by so he walked to work the next morning. He never saw it that close again.
I really enjoy setting around listening to the old timers telling their stories, Thank you Donnie. When I was young we'd hear stories of The white thing or The whistling jack and some more here in Tennessee and they never get old.
I truly love these stories my grandpa grew up in the mountains of Virginia he would tell stories to my brother and sisters like these miss him very much.
Yes, things that can't be explained definitely do exist, I've seen and heard a few myself too. God bless and thanks for sharing, I always enjoy these stories!
Thank you for sharing Bigfoot's story Mr. Donnie. Really enjoyed it. Continued prayers and many blessings to you my friend. God bless you. Have a wonderful weekend.
Donnie, I really enjoy listening to your videos…I’m from near the Appalachian region myself. Born and raised in upstate South Carolina. I wanted to share this story with you. Spooky yet humorous. My dad is from Alabama. Way back in the early 1960s, my grandaddy and his brother and my dad and a cousin were coming home from somewhere and were riding down a dirt road. It was late in the evening and the car got stuck in the mud. They got out and commenced to try to get it out of the mud. All of a sudden my grandaddy looked up on a hill next to them. He said about that time he saw the biggest “cat” he had ever seen. Said it had big ol long ears and he had never seen anything like it. My grandaddy ran up the hill and took off after it, said it was so big it was crunching corn stalks in the field it was running through. My dad was very young when this happened so didn’t remember a whole lot about it but said when my granddaddy would tell this story to others, it would scare him half to death. My dad was an adult when it finally dawned on him that what my granddaddy had seen was a deer 😆. He had never seen one prior to that. I think they had just re-released deer in to that part of the country at that time or something. God bless!
I researched the black panther sightings claim & learned it's an anomalous genetic defect where it's estimated to be 2-11% @ most worldwide of actually black leopards or jaguars. They HAVE been known to be in the USA. Just very seldom. I think I ran across one article that the PNW had a black panther sighting over 100yrs ago.
That was a neat interview with your friend Donnie......who knows what it was...but red eyeshine and things trying to come in on them all night despite gun fire was a good reason to get on out of there for sure . Thank you for the video Brother.
Interesting video, Donnie. Three seasons ago, during our December muzzleloading season, I heard some strange sounds on our farm in northern Kentucky. The best way to describe it was like a roar but high pitched. And, it sounded like it wasn't more than 50 yards away. I've researched and researched online listening to all the sounds a bobcat, bear, or wild hog makes and I haven't found anything to replicate the sound. It was before daylight, so I never saw it. I only had my flintlock rifle with me that morning. I remember looking in my backpack for my pistol and I had forgotten it. I tell you now that is one of the first things I look for and pack when I get ready to go hunting during blackpowder season. I want more than just one shot. That's the only time something unexplained happened to me. So, I believe these old feller's stories.
I watched yesterday brother just didn't get to comment or share but am now. Love this Donnie thanks for sharing it! 🙏 God bless you and Bigfoot for sharing it. God bless you my awesome mountain brother 🙏
My family has land in Pocahontas County West Virginia just South of Marlinton. It's been in the family since before 1850. I know that it's been said throughout the years that there's mountain lions up there despite the general consensus that they've all been eradicated. I wouldn't be surprised if there happens to be some still in the area since Pocahontas is the least populated county in all of West Virginia! I believe you've mentioned before in a video awhile back & that I would completely agree, that there's probably numerous areas in those mountains that's never had a human traverse. So many hollers, caves & outcroppings for animals to nest down in for anyone to know for certain what's extinct & what's not. Another great video! Hope you're continuing to heal quickly! Stay safe!
What a wonderful thing to see an old friend again, Donnie! I'm glad y'all got the chance to talk and swap stories again. I think Big Foot and his kin learned why that area was called No Business, because they certainly had no business being there! Glad they got out with their skins still on! Names had purpose in the old days! The mountains you live in are beautiful, but ancient. Who knows what secrets they hold? 👀 You're looking mighty well these days, I'm very happy to see that! Y'all take care now! May God bless you and yours. 😊
Hey, Donnie! This video is still one of my favorites! I had a black panther living in the woods beyond my back yard that I caught in a video, by accident, filming a friend asleep in my yard. I didn’t know I did until I viewed the video on my phone a day later. I was shocked! He had always mentioned seeing a big black cat run left to right from the woods through the grass over to disappear out of view behind the old barn! Sure enough, it was true! In my video it runs through my neighbors yard, in the background at the top of my video. I’ve had hunters and farmers I know, raised in the area, and they had no doubt in their mind, from the look of the long tale, body size, the long sprints and the muzzle protruding out like a dog’s. than a house catit was a panther
Love the stories. The mountains are indeed mysterious. When I deer hunt I like to get to my spot about an hour before first light. It’s a little spooky sitting in the dark and I hunt on the ground. After watching this video, I’ll never go into the woods again while it’s dark.🤣🤣 I’d never tell someone they didn’t see or hear what they said they saw or heard. Thanks for the stories Donnie!
@@donnielaws7020 oh I won’t. And I will go into the woods and sit in the dark. It’s kind of neat to do it. I’ve been deer hunting since 1978, so nothing much bothers me. There are 3 things that have scared me in my hunting career. I got lost in the 48,000 acre Natchez Trace State Park. Once I thought I had found human remains but they weren’t. Not cow or deer bones and to this day I still don’t know what kind of animal they were from, but they weren’t human. Lastly, while bow hunting alone in Shelby Forest near Memphis and the river, deep in the woods I came to a clearing, saw a john boat propped against a tree and realized I had walked into about an acre marijuana garden. I got out of there fast!
I know one thing for sure if I heard or saw something there isn’t anyone going to tell me I didn’t or try to tell me what it was so those gentleman that have lived in those mountains all there life I for one believe them, I really enjoy these stories so Donnie keep them coming thanks for sharing and take care.
Thankful you are sharing these stories! My daddy mined coal all his life and he tells of the wild cats ( panthers) they saw as children and as I have gotten older I have seen three near our home. Preserve the stories like you are doing !
I really enjoyed the story very much. Once it gets dark out in the woods it can be very unsettling. The woods hold many unknowns and i would assume much more back in the day. Praying for you my brother in Christ.
I grew up on the Watauga River and, at night, the 'painter screams' would wake me up...cold, shivering and scared, even safe in the house and safer in a warm bed. I'd say that anyone, who doesn't know our mountains are filled with strangness, is from the flatlands and haven't walked the hills in the dark. Blessings on you and 'bigfoot'.
My Father in-law used to tell me stories about Wampus Cats. He was born in McDowell county North Carolina. He lived in different areas like Old Fort, North Cove, and Linville Falls areas. I love learning all I can from different areas of the mountains. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏🌄
WOW!!!! I appreciate you sharing this story & I was Raised between Pal mountain & Clinch mountain & heard plenty of stories JUST LIKE this story & people can say or Think what they want But there's been some Harry tales been told about them mountains back in the day!!!! Also Donnie would absolutely love to hear as many more of those stories as you will share
Love these old stories, I could sit and listen all day long. Thank you for sharing. My grandpa could tell stories that would make your hair stand straight up. He was raised in VA and part Cherokee. 😊

So good to have you back Brother!!! Great video!!
Thank you so much my friend.
God bless!
WOW Thanks so much for sharing your memories and story my friend. Amazing. God bless you.
WOW That's amazing my friend. Thanks for the info. God bless you.
That was a neat interview with your friend Donnie......who knows what it was...but red eyeshine and things trying to come in on them all night despite gun fire was a good reason to get on out of there for sure .
Thank you for the video Brother.
Thanks so much for sharing this my. You never know. God bless you.
WOW that's amazing my friend. That's a scary feeling. Thanks for sharing this. God bless you.
These experiences only happen once or twice in a lifetime. Most of the time all is peaceful.
Thanks Donnie great tales about the strange things in the mountains and woodland , God bless you❤️💚🙏🏻🇬🇧
Your very welcome my friend. God bless you.
@@donnielaws7020 thank you Donnie💚🇬🇧🙏🏻
I watched yesterday brother just didn't get to comment or share but am now. Love this Donnie thanks for sharing it! 🙏 God bless you and Bigfoot for sharing it. God bless you my awesome mountain brother 🙏
Thanks Jared for sharing. God bless you my brother. Take care.
Stay safe!
WOW that's amazing my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. You never know. God bless you.

Awesome my friend. God bless you.
You're looking mighty well these days, I'm very happy to see that! Y'all take care now! May God bless you and yours. 😊
Thank you friend. God bless you. Your very.

Awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. God bless you.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thank you friend. Your very welcome.
WOW that's awesome my friend. Amazing you caught it on camera. Thanks so much for sharing this. Awesome!
Awesome my friend. Don't never let that stop you from ever being in the great outdoors my. God bless you. Thanks for sharing. Your very welcome.
Donnie loved hearing these old stories great video there is a lot of scary things in the woods God bless you my friend ❤️ Shelby
Awesome my friend. Glad you enjoyed it. God bless you. Your very welcome.
I know one thing for sure if I heard or saw something there isn’t anyone going to tell me I didn’t or try to tell me what it was so those gentleman that have lived in those mountains all there life I for one believe them, I really enjoy these stories so Donnie keep them coming thanks for sharing and take care.
Awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. Your very welcome.
Thankful you are sharing these stories! My daddy mined coal all his life and he tells of the wild cats ( panthers) they saw as children and as I have gotten older I have seen three near our home. Preserve the stories like you are doing !
WOW Thanks for sharing this my friend.
Awesome Video 📹
Thank you friend.
I really enjoyed the story very much. Once it gets dark out in the woods it can be very unsettling. The woods hold many unknowns and i would assume much more back in the day. Praying for you my brother in Christ.
So true my friend. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless you. Thanks so much.
WOW Thanks for sharing this my friend. God bless you.
So true!
Thank you Donnie!! There are things out there!!
Amen my friend. Your very welcome.
My Father in-law used to tell me stories about Wampus Cats. He was born in McDowell county North Carolina. He lived in different areas like Old Fort, North Cove, and Linville Falls areas. I love learning all I can from different areas of the mountains. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏🌄
