Marvellous Music, very polished and strong in conception, formally and also on the expressive plan.
Yes, Brahmsian influences, but also a subtle nordic and abstract tendency that seems to transport the listener from Brahms towards ...Sinding.
The writing is also very refined in the pianistic part, so fluent, and perfectly divided between powerful chordal structures and classical balance.
Perfect performances, thanks a lot, Brilliant!

Fine performance of enjoyable music with which I was unfamiliar - in the past, I have generally (if questionably) skipped most composers between Beethoven and Bartok, so this is hardly surprising. Echos of Schumann as well, notably in the penultimate movement of the E-flat. Many thanks.

Not generally a chamber music fan, but when I saw Gernsheim's name, I gave it a flyer. Glad I did. Lovely pieces.

The Allegro Con Brio makes a very fitting finale.

Great inspired music. Great performances! It's absurd to maintain that some composers have not been available to us because of the varied ugly racial and political prejudices of Europe. We hear how Brahmnsian this music is but Brahms obviously based his C Minor Symphony on an ealrier Gernsheim one .

The description here, which suggests that Gernsheim's music just "fell out of favor," ignores the fact that the Nazis intentionally set out to eradicate his work from history, banning performances of his music and removing his papers and any biographies of him from libraries across the Reich.

This man composed in the shadow of Brahms... the mediocrity of this music is why its largely forgotten 🙄

Actually, he was literally banned by the Nazis. And Wagner and his followers before them dominated musical institutions before the actual Nazis came into power (as opposed to the "proto Nazis" like Wagner and Co).
Wagner and people like him wanted to eliminate the "Jewishness in music" which meant destroying people's careers and reputations. Many many excellent compsers became obscure because of that perspective.
It's likely I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, and you probably think that there are perfectly musical reasons, as opposed to political ones, why Gernsheim is obscure. My point, however, is that the political reasons far outweigh the musical ones. His music is at least as good as Ravel's or Jolivet's. There's no good reason he wasn't more performed.
