Thanks for that solve! This puzzle was created for a challenge about thermo sudokus. The thermodynamics pun eventually made me try global entropy for the first time. It's interesting how powerful that global constraint is once you start recognizing the patterns and also how well it works with thermos. The thermo rule was inspired by "renban snakes" and the disappearing thermo aesthetics were inspired by jugglers "ghost cages".
It's only after the solve and watching the video I realise the beauty of the title: "third law" = there are three rules, don't forget about this one, "thermo" => 'thermometers', "dynamics" => dynamic fog. + "third law of thermodynamics" = entropy. And all of that in such a quality puzzle. great fun!
My favorite part of this puzzle has to be the thermo in the middle at the end of the puzzle that gives the 12 pair in row 4 to disambiguate the 1s 2s and 3s. Beautiful puzzle!
I bet the idea for this puzzle started from the title. The third law of thermodynamics is about entropy. So combining thermos, dynamic fog and global entropy encompasses every aspect of the title. Now the partially invisible thermos can't be inspired by the title, but it's a very cool idea.
You are totally right. And the disappearing thermos was just a way to avoid "thermo snakes" in the rules (which I had in the first draft of this puzzle) because snakes seemed even less on flavor (and more complicated to word).
Aargh! Simon filled in all the colours correctly for a change. But didn’t complete the last thermo. It was obvious where it went but it needed finishing,
Been doing the puzzles on the channels for years and usually when it's 1h+ videos I know I wont be able to solve it but this time I did in 40min and really enjoyed the ruleset. Great puzzle! 5stars

Yes, but Simon also gets stressed in normal fog puzzles when he puts in a digit and no fog clears _even when there is no fog surrounding the cell he filled in_ 😉
Just more incredible enginuity from you GDC! Loved everything about it!! Panache and sublime solving from you Simon! Outstanding way to spend chocolate cake day!!
Didn't have a chance to tackle this one last night - so took it on this morning.. Fantastic puzzle! I've said for the last while that I love these dynamic fog puzzles as it really gives a good sense of progress throughout the puzzle and that you're following the logic "correctly" in a sense. Also that ending was quite satisfying working out the 1s, 2s & 3s. Thanks for this one, gdc!
Chocolate cake day??? I gotta go to the grocery store!! Looking forward to watching Simon solve this one!! Happy Monday! Looks Iike our temperatures above freezing all week!!!! Soooo done with freezing weather!
This was my first entropy puzzle and I ended up spending 90 minutes. At the start, I had no idea of how to do it (I spend way too much time looking at entropy in box 1) but it is incredible how much is learned during the puzzle. I feel like I could just jump in with full understanding if I were to do another right now. All the properties and restrictions work beautifully together. I always like rules that end up restricting the puzzle much more than anticipated.
Extremely lovely puzzle. I loved how much info you could get from just a few hints, but that at the same time, it didn't instantly constrain the whole grid.
This was fun to watch. I am coming to it a day (or two?) late, but I knew, as soon as I saw it posted, that I would want to make time for it. Thanks, Simon, for solving while you are still not feeling top notch (not that there was any hint of it in your demeanor or this solve). And it is a fun and interesting puzzle.
very intuitively, and fitting with the physics-themed puzzle, you realized that calling a digits highness (low, medium or high) "polarity" was inadequate because you have three options, and almost stumbled into the concept of color charge, which is a fundamental feature of quarks in particle physics. -liz
I love fog puzzles, but I have to admit, I really dislike dynamic fog. The whole point of the fog is to trigger that frisson when you put in the right digit. Dynamic fog takes most of that away, and it's like you're not even playing a fog puzzle any more.
The point of fog from the solver's perspective (pointing you at what to look at + giving that frisson) is not necessarily the same as from the setter's perspective (allowing clues to only be gradually revealed). I'm also only a minor fan of dynamic fog - but I think it's only because of the expectation set up by regular fog. If it were "putting in certain correct digits will make more clues appear", I'd be down again
54:36 Can fill in the rest of the entropy in box 8 here-once the strip of three highs are placed, the strips of three cells on either side must alternate low and mid (since any 2x2 with two of the high digits on that middle strip must have one each of the other two entropy sets). Since there are two middle digits in column 6 that side must be low/mid/low, and to finish off the count of lows and mids for the box the other side must be mid/low/mid.
@ feeling a bit scattered 😜! Also some iPad difficulties with making comments- so entered them separately! Hope you are doing well! Feeling better now that weather is warmer. Got a star gazer app on my phone and went out to see the planets aligned the other night! Could only see Mars/Jupiter/Venus and maybe Saturn - but really excited about star app - it shows constellations and other info! Way cool!😎. 🩷❤️🧡💛💚💜💙
@@longwaytotipperary So cool you got a star gazer app able to see all those planets!! Didn't know you were into Astronomy etc.. Having a warmup here also . 50s towards end of week ..had bright sunshine today. Definitely puts me into a better mood. Being scattered isn't fun.
I think I did quite well :) followed along with you and got 63:41, thought of ideas normally just before you did, but it’s just not things I would think of on my own. I appreciate that you do these videos, help me with my thought process on variant sudokus.
I really enjoyed this puzzle, I'm starting to think I've found my favorite setter in the person of gdc. The solves might be hard or tricky, but I never feel lost in the logic, and always manage to logic my way to end! Thank you for bringing these amazing puzzles to our attention!
I solved it in 69 minutes and change and with no hints. I'm pretty happy with that given the length of the video. A very nice puzzle with a very nice break-in and satisfying to the very last move.
Absolutely fantastic puzzle! The power of the entropy rule was great and allowed for such a sparsely populated grid. Never truly got stuck but it wasn't easy by any stretch. 4/5 for difficulty. Finished in 53:15.
I finished in 87:54 minutes. That was a tough one to wrap my head around. Figuring out the meta of this entropy ruleset was so fun to do. I was a little slow on the upstart, but as I went along, I think I picked up some tricks. I think my favorite parts were the same logic and seeing that r5c1 and later on r7c7 both couldn't be high entropy as this causes another square to lack a high possibility. That is so cool how that kind of logic developed from this ruleset. Nice setting. Great Puzzle!
I really enjoy these videos, I watch them when I go to bed but tonight I want be able to sleep because Simon didn't finish the puzzle as he didn't draw in the last thermo, which immensely triggers my OCD 😢. Perhaps I will have to watch an older one to feel better.
57:20 with the fog not lifting once telling me I made a mistake in box 1. Thinking about the low/med/high for the break in was fun. I'm used to these puzzles having a more "regular" pattern, so was surprised to get 789 in a row a couple of times.
Thanks for the lovely birthday wishes from my kids to my spouse. You made his day! And, you were right about the names: Joel goes by JoeJoe and Gwendolyn goes by Gwennie.
I found out my birthday is chocolate cake day. Well when you share such a day with 2 greats such as Mozart and John Witherspoon chocolate cake is a plus
27:00 Loving your unexplained casual reference to Dusty Bin. I can't help wonder what all your international viewers made of that! To explain: an old British TV game show was called 321, and featured Dusty Bin as a character and a booby prize.
Title: "This Most Simple Sudoku Rule = Fog Magic" - I don't think this counts as "Most Simple Sudoku Rule" - you got thermos, partially even invisible, and additionally the entropy, plus the fog. One of them might count as simple, but certainly not the combination. I got stuck after ~ 90 minutes, then watched until Simon gave me a hint at 42:45. Managed to finish it from there. 187:21 in total, solve counter 7075.
Just wanted to say that the SudokuPad app for some reason doesn't like the fog. It wouldn't update to clear any fog, even with a correct digit, but then I exited the puzzle and came back and the 3x3 area around each correct digit was revealed, which is not how the puzzle was built. I'm not sure if there's some setting to check or some known fix for this, but this puzzle is essentially impossible and incorrect on the app for me.
19:29 In both versions, the 9 in box 1 ends up in the same place. Column 2 Row 1. You either go straight up or straight out, if you go out 9 cannot be in a culdesac with 789 so it has to go away, so you should be able to place the 9. 24:24 He sees it.
Thanks for that solve! This puzzle was created for a challenge about thermo sudokus. The thermodynamics pun eventually made me try global entropy for the first time. It's interesting how powerful that global constraint is once you start recognizing the patterns and also how well it works with thermos. Incredible puzzle as always, apart from the CTC videos is there a list of links to your puzzles?
Fog in the title, I clicked on the video as quickly as possible and a gdc puzzle with a weird ruleset, the best way to spend an evening.
I love the way the 1/2/3's were resolved at the end. Such an elegant flow caused by finding that first 3.
It's only after the solve and watching the video I realise the beauty of the title:
"third law" = there are three rules, don't forget about this one, "thermo" => 'thermometers', "dynamics" => dynamic fog.
+ "third law of thermodynamics" = entropy.
And all of that in such a quality puzzle. great fun!
Has there ever been a more suitable name for a puzzle than this? Excellent work

It's impressive how much was able to be solved with just 4 thermos (and then 2 to clarify the rest). Loved the logic around the 2x2 entropy.
It seems a lot of sudoku creators have remarkable ideas these days.

The possibilities seem endless and mechanics setters invent are always awesome to uncover

I love fog puzzles, but I have to admit, I really dislike dynamic fog. The whole point of the fog is to trigger that frisson when you put in the right digit. Dynamic fog takes most of that away, and it's like you're not even playing a fog puzzle any more.

takes a bit of getting your head around it, but I liked this one (and managed to solve it myself).

57:20 with the fog not lifting once telling me I made a mistake in box 1. Thinking about the low/med/high for the break in was fun. I'm used to these puzzles having a more "regular" pattern, so was surprised to get 789 in a row a couple of times.
41:59 Why is Simon afraid of 6? … because 7 8 9. 😂
@54:53 yeah. that's a 79 pair... Simons says, totally missing that the adjecent 8 is a way faster way to see it.

Eventually Simon examines row 5
19:29 In both versions, the 9 in box 1 ends up in the same place. Column 2 Row 1. You either go straight up or straight out, if you go out 9 cannot be in a culdesac with 789 so it has to go away, so you should be able to place the 9.
24:24 He sees it.
37:24 for me!
Just had an idea for a new song... "tiny progress" sung to the rune of "tiny dancer"
At first I thought the title of the puzzle said "dynamies" instead of "dynamics". It's much cuter that way to be fair.
I do love me some fog
oh no! Simon didn't finish the last thermo! (it curls around to the 9 in r4c6)
Simon, chocolate cake day should be on your birthday!
Yay for Chocolate Cake Day!
we need someone to make a middly counter for this video
Nori nori!
The numbers on the blue and green kinda hard to read in this palette. Pretty sure om not color blind
It could be your screen settings. It looks fine on my phone.
01:48:59 for me
62:30 for me.
A+
kind
51:26 today. quite hard.
You forgot to complete the thermo starting in box 5, could go to the 9 or 8 (if allowed to join the other thermo).
Thermos cannot overlap is in the rules (so it has to go to the 9).
Every step hard fought. 100mins. Should have been more agressive about colouring.
Incomplete puzzle, one thermo was not completed.
