  • Converted my Royal Manufacturing sluice to use Gold Hog Matting instead of the stock riffles. The difference is night and day, before the GH mats this little sluice was horrible, now it's near perfect.

    Thanks! At first I didn't have enough velocity, I added a little more pitch and got a little more water flowing through and it worked great. The biggest problem people have is not running the water fast enough, velocity is needed to activate the mats and get them working properly. The Scrubber and Ur are pretty good, you may want to check out the new stuff if you get a chance, the Razor Back and River Hog mats. Good luck and lot's of yellow in yer pan!

    Really enjoyed the vid. I love it when the camera is close enough to actually watch the mats transferring and doing the job!! Thanks so much for the post!!!

    I watched in low-resolution because my internet service is soooo slow, so I missed the good details. I use the scrubber mats and U/R mats in my highbanker and think they are superior to everything else I have used, by far...
    great name! good videos!

    I just found your video. I love my Gold Hog mats too!
    I hope by now you’ve discovered that you really need that slick plate area at the top of the sluice.
    I didn’t hear what mat combo you used though.
    Other than that it’s a very good video!
    Heavy pans always!!

    I agree with the BAZOOKA comment. It is by far the best sluice I have ever used, and it will beat you up by the end of each day if you don't pace yourself. It catches big flake, little pickers, and surprisingly small flour for the velocity I run it at. It's worth the time it takes to set it up!

    ?I really like this video since it is a first ever overhead shot of hog mats. Super nice build with hog mat front to back. I want to build a box like this. Excellent video. Super thumbs up!!!

    Every peice of equipment has it's place. That bazooka would be a great sampling sluice for me. I saw one of the Mackirk sluice and was impressed, that is a low water sluice that works great. I'm hardcore, so I will pack my powered stuff in as far as I have too. Most of my prospecting is done in the Winter so I gotta make it count.

    Ya no water = problems. Even for the bazooka.I hear ya man and I agree :)

    The only way to get alot of gold is to move alot of dirt. That is what Gold Hog is about, moving massive amounts of dirt. Always short on time I habitually overfed my equipment, now I can run the dredge at WOT and my HB could handle 2 - 3 guys feeding it. Since I got the dredge and HB my sluices recover dust. Just can't move enough dirt here in OH with them. Another thing I like is you build a custom mat just for your app, five kinds of mat with five purposes and five different ways to trap gold

    @smokalottapottamus  11 років тому

    I like the fluid bed concept in the bazooka. Have you tried Gold Hog mats? This is not what they are desined for really. They are designed to move maxium amounts of material with decent recovery. Check out the vid of my HB running the mats. I ran my old Gold King dredge slightly above idle, any higher and I blew ut the fine stuff, all we have in OH. Got the mats took out the riffles and now I run it just under wide open throttle! I get better recovery and less cons too.

    I have come up with a few ideas for low water and recirc problems. First one is a way to pump water from a creek a few inches deep, second is a sediment trap for recirc setups. I will be working on them this Winter and will put up videos. I'm a DIY guy and make most of my own stuff or pick up old second hand stuff and supercharge it. Practicing and figuring out what works and what doesn't here in OH so when I make it to Alaska I am not trying to learn the basics.

    I have one of those Royals too, it started working better when I left some slick plate area exposed with no matting in top of the flare. Mine has some regular Keene v mat for the first two inches, then it's Miracle mat to the end. I just bought some GH Razorback myself, but that is going into an a52.

  • @smokalottapottamus
    @smokalottapottamus  10 років тому

    The matting stays in place on it's on in this application. I cut it so that it fits tight, then I used tape on the sides to create a flap that seals the sides and also creates a nice tight fit. The V shape portion at the of the mat prevents it from sliding down too.

    I have all the mats in my dredge, these are scrap pieces, most of it is the medium velocity Razor Back designed for hand sluices. This was just a test in the small creek behind my house to see if it would work or not. If you watch the video in High Def you can see the exchange. If you didn't watch the whole video you didn't see it.
    I run my dredge at wide open throttle and catch minus 150 mesh gold with it, the stuff works better than advertised.

  • @smokalottapottamus
    @smokalottapottamus  10 років тому

    This is Razorback mat, one section of UR mat and River Hog with the riffle cut off. I used scrap sections and use this sluice for testing. It would be better to just line a stream sluice with Razorback, that's what it was designed for.

  • @smokalottapottamus
    @smokalottapottamus  11 років тому

    This was a simple test to see if the mats would exchange. First there are five different types of matting, each one has a application. Razor Back mat is designed for stream sluices, but still requires decent flow, the rest are not designed for stream sluices. The test I was doing here was just to see if the OTHER mats would work with very small slow moving streams. This is my testing sluice, for sampling. Nothing is running a bucket in 2 min in the stream behind my house. It's a trickle of water

    Unfortunately you just didn't have enough water flow to make those mats work as well as they are capable. Gold Hog matting is pretty amazing. I captured some of the finest gold I have ever recovered using those mats. I am a believer!

    That don't really sound like the Doc I have talked to. His comments are disabled because of the trolls. His forum gives a strong warning about being respectful and drama before you can even enter. It's the drama and flame wars that ensue. Loo at my video AK-47 vs M-16. It's a controlled test by professionals with the ORIGINAL VINTAGE models, and the rank them evenly. Yet look at the flame war going on there.

    I took that out of mine, you could leave it in, I wanted as much GH mat as possible, I even lined my flare with it.

    I am new to this game but have watched hours of vids and read all i can on the Gold Hog mats. I just got my 1st sluice..Keene A52. I have 1 strip of Scrubber coming and 1 strip of razorback. I hope to use it for fine gold recovery as a river sluice and hook a header box on it at home for clean up.I won't have enough Razorback to do the whole thing.(10 inches wide) If i have to add some Scrubber...where should i put it? I am worried velocity will be good for one and too slow for the other.

  • @MrPortsider
    @MrPortsider 11 років тому

    Also..the Keene sluice comes with a small piece of light ribbed rubber mating glued down to the 1st 6" or 8"..just below the flare...can i just leave this in?

    gold hog should invent some nice tool for the clay material because as you know it holds most of thje gold but its soo hard to squish and get the gold from it

    • @smokalottapottamus
      @smokalottapottamus  9 років тому

      Vladimir Nachev Use a paint mixer to break up the clay in a bucket full of water.

    REALLY nice close camera work do you use a "GO PRO" CAMERA?
    Ilke gold hog stuff, but I don't understand why anyone would even use any type of matting when much better technology is out there like the ANGUS MIKIRK molded AU SERIES sluices are avail. Kinda like driving a car that still has points type ignition (obsolete concept). Again, good video.

    • @smokalottapottamus
      @smokalottapottamus  10 років тому

      Thanks! The camera is a Sony handycam. Gold Hog matting is more like driving a NASCAR than a car with points. I run it in my dredge and highbanker, can't really do that with the molded drop riffle sluices and move the amount of material I do. I like the molded drop riffle sluices for slow water, nothing beats them in that situation. But when it comes to moving the most material in the least amount of time, nothing compares to Gold Hog.

    Only one mat that should ever be in a sluice is the DEEP PASTIC ASTRO TURF THE 5/8" deep flexible green stuff ive seen some in black ..its firm but the bristes flex when hit by water and gravel shaking heavys deeper into it..it doesnt plug cause it shakes the lighter stuff out..i know cause 1400 Tons per shift of rich ground for years proved its self and to every lg scale miner i know in Alaska. i tried every thing..only mat that never let a speck big enough to pick up get near the rnd of the sluice is Astro turf not that shallow flat strip stuff like close mowed grass the DEEP FLEXIBLE BRUSH LIKE TURF..I WATCH THE SLUICEING VIDEOS..its sad how ineffectent to any are..hand shovel or big loaders.etc 🤗
