Thank you, Jocko. From this saddened Canadian, 'tis a lovely tribute to the greatest storyteller my country has ever produced. RIP Gordon Lightfoot. God bless.
I Grew up on the St. Seaway and started sailing on these ships two years after the Edmund Fitzgerald when down, I sailed off and on for 20 odd years all over the lakes. The Edmund Fitzgerald sailed right by my house countless times. Lake Superior as well as Erie can get brutal. Those poor guys. What a way to go. God bless them. We used to listen to this on board often. Gordon Lightfoot was amazing. I grew up loving his music. Thanks Jocko.
As a Michigander having lived in both Peninsulas I always loved this song about my state and the lakes. I remember that evening walking home from checking my traps and hoping this snowstorm (that dumped about 6 inches) would be enough to cancel school and hearing on the news that a freighter was missing....
Thank YOu! Such a strong song I remember hearing in my youth in high fidelity for the first time when the song came out, I was like 8 years old in 1975 or so. I listened to that song hundreds of times. Shivers. RIP GL. 🙏
My dad was a sailor, and as a child, this song is what he would play on his guitar, he taught himself to play on the ship when he was in the Coast Guard. I hear him as Jocko plays...... Thank you for the memory👍
Not only a badass seal commander but sings and plays acoustic of my motherlands greatest folk singer Gordon Lightfoot…great song detailing a great tragedy…we’ll done sir
Grew up in Cleveland, OH. I was 16 years old, and a Junior in high school when the Edmond Fitzgerald was lost in November, 1975. I remember the headlines well. It's a strange feeling when folklore has occurred in one's own lifetime.
In the early/mid 70s my eldest brother was a merchant marine. This song will forever remind me of my brother and the concern of my mother for her sailor. ⚓️
I honestly didn't know that you played guitar. Hit me out of left field. I honestly thought you were going to talk about the wreck itself. A a mediocre guitar player myself you did a great job honoring Mr. Lightfoot. He is such an overlooked talent. Glad to see him getting some love.
Great song and great rendition by Jocko. Thanks also to the writer of the original melody (Bobby Sands), for the Irish folk song, "Back Home in Derry". The original song is a tribute to the captured and exiled Irish from the Irish Rebellion of 1803. It's worth a listen.
I remember as a child my mother would listen to cassette tapes of Gordon Lightfoot in her vw bug . This song always was one of my favorites. Good job on the rendition
This is one of those sacred songs that should never be covered….except for Jocko. The last person I would ever expect to sing and actually post it, but I understand why. A haunting and important song, there’s no other person on the planet that can give this song the justice it deserves. Well done.
I grew up in Michigan and have a picture of of the Fitzgerald going through the Soo locks, and stood off Whitefish point 15 miles out lies the Fitzgerald. Been fascinated ever since.
SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in Lake Superior during a storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29 men. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there. Wikipedia
Lake Superior has swallowed many a ship. Lake Erie still holds the title for the largest number swallowed. RIP Master Lightfoot. Your memory lives on in your musical legacy.
100% we all want more of this. Please good sir! Also, your content, your leadership, I become a better person daily through your message. Thank you for all you've given. Here and there. 🫡
Love the song..was following the story of the Big Fitz for a long time now .. Thanks for this.. Rip to all the men lost in this big tragedy and a subscribe from me..
I met a merchant marine who worked on the ocean for a decade, he said he would never serve on a lakes freighter because as he said “in the ocean you can just sail out of a storm, in the Lakes you have to ride it out because on one side of the lake is the US the other side is Canada and there’s not enough water between the two to get around a storm”
OMG. That was jaw dropping. Almost never does a cover version sound as enjoyable, in its own way of course, as the original. And even more rare, sound even better. This is one such case. Also mind blowing is to hear such high level artistry and emotion from a man we see as the tough and brave type. So much for my typecasting of people. Jocko, you've completely debunked my assumption that artists are on the emotional/neurotic end of the spectrum opposite from brave men in full control of their emotions. It's usually the musicians, painters, poets and writers who suffer anxiety, such as myself, and have no chance of handling combat, skydiving, flying fighter planes, etc. And oppositely, the brave people who can operate in extreme danger while controlling their emotions, aren't usually so artistic. Well, so much for that theory. You're a hell of an artist. Not just "sorta" good, but top level, you could have been as great a singer/guitarist/performer, as a career, as you were a SEAL. Wow man. Where did you come from? You're beyond human. I've watched your podcasts regularly, for a long time, but I've never left a comment... until now. Because this performance of yours was just too much. Now you are double what was already a person of maximum capacity. Woah. Jeez man. Well done. Just so well done. I have to go re-think everything now.
Thank you, Jocko. From this saddened Canadian, 'tis a lovely tribute to the greatest storyteller my country has ever produced. RIP Gordon Lightfoot. God bless.

We need more Jocko Sings. Maybe a whole separate channel for just Jocko's music content.
There is no need for a separate channel. All he needs to do is put them in a playlist.
Thanks 👍 for honoring the late Gordon Lightfoot Jocko. May 1 was a sad day for us Canadians and music lovers the world over.
