Gordon raced Burton squeaky clean to make up for the forced contact he made when he bashed into Burton on the final lap of the 1997 Southern 500 where Gordon won the million. Any other racer and Gordon would have bumped his way past.

When you beat Jeff Gordon in 1998 when he almost untouchable you know you did something special and that’s what Burton did that night.

I honestly do think that more than Gordon being a clean racer in general, that Southern 500 played a part in how he raced Burton.
