  • This video discusses pulleys and block and tackle problems. It covers how to determine the IMA for any pulley or block and tackle setup, and how to use the IMA to determine the effort force required to lift any resistance. PS- The pulley pictures were done using MS Paint!

this dude is a G. Now I understand what my engineering teacher was talking about.

After a lot of videos, I finally learned about pulleys. I have a complete album of videos but this one is easy for a novice who wants to learn and this video did that. Thanks for the real help on block and tackle pulleys. You're good, very good.

Thanks for that basic introduction.Im not using this merely for my engineering school but for my own project.Im about to invent something never seen before.thx for this basic intro=)

Slick. I took this stuff years ago and my GF is currently taking a statics course so this is a help explaining it to her.

Very good, Thanks I just go a machine that is already assembled but not on the base. I have to put it on the base and the machine comes in at 255 lb. and this machine cost me over $1300. This block and tackle method sounds like just what I need. Thanks for the clear math lesson. As a over 40 year journeyman carpenter and cabinet maker I learned early in my apprenticeship about lever & fulcrum situations to move anything. once again thanks for the lesson well done.

Great Video...I would like to see your tutorial on force required to lift "X" based upon number of falls.

Great video! But counting the number of pulley wheels is not a reliable method of finding the ideal mechanical advantage (IMA). For example, if you turn the block and tackle pulley system from the last example upside-down, the IMA becomes five. But if you use the method of counting the number of pulley wheels to find the IMA, you would get four; but this would be incorrect since the IMA is actually five.

It would be interesting to give the ratio of the load lifting speed to the speed of the driving force F if for example we have a winch with a motor.

    Can u solve one ques?
A block and tackle, having two sheaves at the top block and two at the
hook with the rope anchored at the top block, is reefed with a manila rope.
Suggest a suitable diameter for the rope if the maximum load to be raised
is 4000 N. Also calculate the efficiency of the hoist.
