Auston Williams The diamond will completely come out, or will they keep it for back-up? I do know that diamonds are expensive to maintain and usually the "newer" railroad has to pay for all upkeep/maintenance. Just for economic reasons I can see it coming out after the flyover is completed.
I use to watch trains here with my dad back in 2005 / 2006 when I lived with him in New Lennox Illinois and the Will County Model Railroad club was in the Rialto Square Theator building and had an view through the windows of BNSF & UP action which the far line is the former IC / GM&O Chicago to St. Louis double track line which SP took over then it became UP. Also Metra operates on the former IC / GM&O. The track closer to Joliet Union Station is the former Santa Fe which is now BNSF. =^.^=
Yup, I'm still learning the tracks despite my first Joliet Union Station trip being back in 1977! I appreciate the information. Thank-you for commenting!
I say the same thing quite a bit but I keep switching up the locations. This week the Englewood Diamond was replaced by the flyover, and in a few short years Bensenville will be completely different. I guess we all got to be a little faster in capturing this history....? Thank-You for viewing and commenting!!!
Great vid. Of course as with all things railroad, its about the money, im sure ''time'' (which of course=$$) is the main reason they give for this move, but I gotta think maintenance is a BIG factor....those diamonds have GOT to be a huge pain in the ass to maintain. look at the condition of those things, if I had track like that in that condition on MY layout, I'd be re railing equipment all day....and of course for every derailment I would blame the engineer, pull his license and fire him, pay a few fines to the NTSB and move on...without making any improvements to the track at all.
Those diamonds are expensive to maintain! The BNSF used to have a diamond at West Chicago but it was not worth paying for the maintenance on a track that saw so little use. That diamond was ripped out (although it is still sitting next to the right of way) and it is very unlikely that it will ever go back in. I suppose the MOW guys look at that stuff and see "job security?" Thank-You very much for viewing and commenting!
i just miss this so much, metra goes over the diamond
I have yet to go back. Some rail fans say that a lot of the platforms are closed to rail fans.
that's right, there used to be 3 track on the Rock that crossed these diamonds
All the lost trackage, ripped out during many decades, was a topic of conversation while we were up there. We're hurting now 'cuz of it!
the Englewood diamond will also be obsolete for the new flyover bridge
Auston Williams Are they building the flyovers to accomidate the weight of freight trains, or just built for the lighter passenger trains?

Irving P. Feldspar lighter passenger trains
I wish they would bring back the Rock Island Line to The quad cities.
I agree. Iowa Interstate still runs a lot of the old Rock but it is not like the old days! Thank-You For viewing!

Sigh* I wish I got the opportunity to railfan there one last time before the station closed. Too late now. :(
