- Luck be a Landlord Part 73 - here it is, the ultimate defining strategy guide for Landlord. All symbols ranked from best to worst, as well as the optimal uses and times to pick each one, all resulting in an extremely subjective ranking. But hey, it's done well for me so far.

I feel like this wouldn’t be that fun to play since you would have almost no control over the outcome of the game. I think it would be more interesting if you were allowed to skip as well.
There should be some strategy aspects for Tyler, so make it pick the highest, pick the lowest, or skip.

The one thing that I think makes fossil and eldritch creature better is that 1 eat increases all of them. So getting one, and getting it up to say, +7 and getting another, that one is also +7, such instant value.
True, but that is relying on getting another rare/very rare symbol to come up again. This isnt very common at all, and you would only take Frozen Fossil if you already have an eldritch, if for some reason you have 2 hexes.
Eldritch is also really good for the final boss fight since it gets rid of hex of destruction, which could absolutely ruin your run if it gets rid off one of your key symbols. Frozen Fossil IMO is in its correct place, and I would put Eldritch in lower S tier rather than A tier due to how horrible that hex of destruction in the landlord fight could be.
Yeah but you removing symbols contribute to fossils and creatures. Ive had situations where I get rid of 2 cultists and Ill have time machine
Not to mention that fossils just become rare creatures so its great

Barely ten minutes in, and I already have to say: THANK YOU editors for actually editing a tier list! I despise when people do a tier list and expect you to know everything they are talking about, so they never show you examples of what they are talking about. Not only does that leave less knowledgeable people completely confused, but it just makes watching the list very bland and boring, which it doesn't have to be. I mean, rankings and tier lists are conceptually the same type of video, but why is it that the former is treated with so much more care? So again, thanks for not making it a 1 hour snooze fest right off the bat.

I never expected this type of video from Tyler, but I love it.
Something that I don't think Tyler acknowledged about Eldritch Creature/Frozen Fossil is that it can be pre-fed by just removing hexes, witches, and cultists with tokens and each eat or removal buffs *each* EC/FF.
I've never had that be more than a +1 to the eldritch creature tho, it basically just means you can spend a removal token on the landlord's hex of destruction without waiting for the eldritch creature to eat it
It _might_ be worth noting that the Dwarf and Monkey pay out based on the destroyed symbol's value _when that symbol was destroyed._ It is this distinction that allows for a potentially funny "Volleyball" interaction:
You can have an "Increases any symbol" effect like Arrows, Buffing Capsule, or even Midas Bomb increase both the Dwarf/Monkey and its target symbol _at the same time_ to basically square the multiplier applied to the Dwarf/Monkey; Buffing Capsule and Bronze Arrow become 4x, Silver Arrow becomes 9x, Golden Arrow becomes 16x, and Midas Bomb becomes FORTY-NINE-X.
With Dwarf _(Dwarven Anvil)_ and Wine, you can use [what I'm assuming to be] a -quadratic- algebraic formula for an absolutely hysterical spike:
*x=(40+20y)z²*
Y is the additive bonus a Wine has accumulated. Happy Hour counts as +1 for Y's purposes.
Z is the increase to be double-stacked; stuff like Arrows, Buffing Capsule, and Midas Bomb.
It is this quadratic potential that makes it a surprise that Dwarf would be in F-tier. While it's not consistent like the growballs, it seems like it would at least deserve a low-D... How hard would you say it is to set up Dwarven Volleyball-gebra?
EDIT - So I, uh, forgot about the Wildcard and Copycat when posting that above formula... If you somehow get a Wildcard or Copycat during a Dwarven Volleyball-gebra run, you can have your booster increase a straight line of Wine, Dwarf, and Wildcard to have the booster *CUBE THE WILDCARD.* 4x/9x/16x/49x becomes 8x/27x/64x/343x. I guess the only drawback of this is that if you use Copycat, the run's likely to be Cat% instead of Volleyball.
I think the issue with doing this is it's generally a one or two time thing that you actually get to work, it's not very sustainable and generally much worse when the combo does go off. That's why wildcard/copycat versions work so well, they don't destroy the symbol, so they can be used over and over, plus spamming the symbol makes it more reliable

Well, another thing, I like at least, about the Item Cap is that it removes some of the common items from the item pool to give you a higher chance of seeing the higher tier items as you go
I don't believe it does, actually. If you would ever be offered a Common item and there aren't any more in the pool, then you'll simply be offered a Pool Ball. You can even be offered 3 Pool Balls for your rent payment item if you've managed to empty the Common pool entirely and don't have any luck buffs by then!
So if you're hunting for a specific Common item, it obviously helps search for it faster, but otherwise it doesn't improve your odds at finding any rarer items
@@alliebonesVODs actually I don’t think it does that anymore. For me, when I ran out of commons it just started giving me duplicates. So like, two pizza the cats so you get +2 etc
@@lizzzylavender Yeah, you're right - I was just playing last night for the first time in a while and that seems to be the case now.
In defense of eldrich creature is that its the only eater that you can safely take multiple of. They'll all be worth the same value and it also increases the odds of hexes being destroyed by them, buffing every eldrich in your deck. I think it's low S-tier. You take the very rare and you can probably find frozen fossils along the way later.
Nearly all of this makes sense, works and is basically how I play.
Opinions: I give more value to Miner for early game value, low D or lowest D. However-
Buffing capsule is always X2, and the void items only give 2 coins less then wealthy capsule and give empties value, AND have some insane synergy with their essence and item-related buffs.
I'd put buffing capsule above bronze arrow because its always going to hit something, and arrows rarely if ever work out for me personally. It's a feelings game, really. And the void items below wealthy capsule, because they are slightly worse, or one above wealthy capsule, because they have SO much more synergy. It's good quick cash.
Actually- spirit is like a directly better bubble, so I'd probably put that one above bubble. Its quick, great cash, and always a great rare if you lack rerolls from spending them all or randomly- its great if you have any empty space to fill. Its a directly better bubble that might-maybe get better.
Void items early game are 3-8 coin rolls as well roughly speaking when considering the empties around them, which is something to consider for only an uncommon. They are great, really.

I clicked this video for two reasons, I wanted to hear you talk for an hour, and two was learning more about the game so I have something more than visual and auditory satisfaction from watching you play, both wishes were fulfilled
I think that the devs of Luck Be A Landlord could look at this video and balance the game around the lackluster synergies. I myself can come up with a few ideas to either buff these bad symbols or add new symbols/items to make the existing ones connect better to numerous possible synergies.
in a recent blog post the dev said he doesn't forsee doing any more balance changes to LBAL sadly.
There will always be bad symbols, something has to be last. As is, the bad symbols are still interesting and occasionally still worth taking, which is good game design.
@@livelyy. You are right that something has to be last, but I think that there is still room to improve considering that some of these symbols are not worth taking on average. I feel like if symbols like Miner, Dwarf and Mouse just gave more for their eats, at least they would be more "high risk high reward". The way they are now is more like "high risk low reward" which is bad game design.
The editing this video must've taken is crazy
Really good video and loving all the explanations you give to all the tiers and picks. I feel like a few of them you will say one thing about a symbol and then put it in a tier that doesn't make any sense given your justifications on it or other items, especially when it comes to flexibility. For example:
- You put billionaire in C tier despite it only being useful with one item
- You put Jester an entire tier below honey but I feel like jest is a much more interesting lynchpin item. Honey does give a huge one time boon on a bear but in any other case it just gets 3-4 if it's next to a bee. Jester similarly is a 3 per with additional upside with a narrow use case symbol, but having several suits has a higher upper limit, plus there are a whopping 4 different suit cards so they make up a really large part of the uncommons pool. The jester also has synergy with comedian and an indirect synergy with things like card shark. It's at least much better than bartender because it *can't* put beers in your pool lol.
- Coconut half is literally the same exact thing as orange and has an additional common eater vs a very rare eater and you put orange an entire tier above it.
- Target and Sanddollar are very similar but target has 3 different S tier symbols to work with instead of one. The only difference is diver has a little bit more adjacency area.
This video helped me so much that not long after watching, I've gone from not being able to complete a run to 4th floor and still going. Really well put together video. Thanks!

Just completed my first Level 20 game & came straight to watch this.
Really interesting and well made video. The big stand out for me was your placing of Miner. I've won 75% of my games with 1 or 2 Miners. It's definitely a strategy that can succeed.
Looking forward to playing the game further to explore new combos.
Dove is actually the best bird in my opinion. :( It goes extremely well with swapping device, or even in general if you are doing an eater build. I think that it is at least A tier. Also, you have to remember that if it stops an eater from eating, the eater still gets the effect of eating. Same with capsules.
Not all the capsules. If it says 'when destroyed' the dove stops the good effect, if it says 'do X and then destroy' then dove is good
Basically turns all capsules into hustling capsules without the payment required (except essense ofc) as well as their additional effect. Definitely underated on the list as it can definitely carry runs in the mid to late game and I've never had a time I've been disappointed by it.
I enjoy this Tyler the most, I find. Analytical, yet still engaging and goofy.
Diver became my fav symbol as I got into higher levels. Being able to spam grab anchors, snails, crabs and turtles in early game; then later 2 coin jellyfish, sand dollars, pufferfish, and of course oysters+pearls really helped with the 3 blocked spaces on the reel. Everything they eat gives some sort of bonus coin or token, so you can grab all their "food" early on. Happy to see you put them in S tier.
Holy smokes this editor. 32:01 who has the time to change something so tiny that 99% of people would never notice, I didn’t even hear Tyler flip his words until i rewatched that part to read the text that caught my eye from changing.
I love that I had a choice between Diamond and Golden arrow. I obviously took Golden arrow, but then it ended up pointing outside to board for the next 16 turns and I lost, the diamond would've had me in the game for longer.
Arrows are sapient and know when you need their help
FYI, the Hex of Draining and Hex of Thievery are switched in the tier list - you can hear Tyler talking about the Hex of Draining being 1.2 on average and Hex of Thievery being situationally good when it should be the other way around.
I would put eldrich creature a little higher just because of getting more them one get it same scaling as one already on board. It scales from how many are in removed/destroyed pile, not how many it eats, so it can snowball extremely fast.

I've been considering making my own tier list for the game and I ended up disagreeing with this list more than I expected, but not by a lot
My main points of conflict is just due to how I'd evaluate each symbol, as someone who's grinding the achievements any strategy that could and has resulted in a guillotine essence win instantly goes up in my own rankings (e.g. owl). I myself would also split each of the rarities into different lists
It seems you got hex of draining and hex of thievery mixed up. I do however believe they're pretty close in value, as thievery's downsides are one of the easiest to work around between witches, tax evasion and ritual candle
I feel you undervalued the scaling of pear and amethyst. While I agree they are very bad without something to buff them, they very quickly become on par with the eaters once/if you do. And once they have a larger base value, each subsequent buff becomes better and better

i did a successful floor 20 cultist build while watching this lol, i like cultist more than most give it credit you get 3 or more which isn’t hard and thats really good money. endgame you see a frozen fossil or straight up eldritch creature and your super set for that too, which is what i did i had 2 frozen fossils pop right at the landlord fight having 8 cultists and i was smooth sailing the entire time up to and during the landlord fight
I think you underrate dove, also, dove protecting capsules does nothing because their effect trigger when destroeyed. Basically dove works the best when you don't want symbols removed as much as you like the effects on their destruction, perfects example: bears and honey. Dove also pairs well with eaters that get a permamet buff from destroying symbols because then you get +2 and said item will get triggered again. It also works really well with spirits. In my honest opinion it deserves the bottom of C tier.
Also dwarf... you ignored the part where he is the only eater that gives x10 gold of symbols value (except midas bomb, but well, it's midas bomb), which means you can get amazing values from him.
Another thing you forgot, this time about eldritch. It accounts what symbols you have in a destroyed/removed pool, it's the only scalling symbol that doesn't need to eat them directly, meaning you can grab a bad symbol and then instantly remove it. It also means multiple of them are much better than even the pirate. For that eldritch deserves S tier
I’d totally watch a video where Tyler goes over ideas for new symbols, or ideas on how to buff certain symbols.
My best runs have been when I got an early amethyst.

I gotta disagree for amethyst, I think it's better than some of the eaters. If you even just have one arrow, the amethyst has the potential to carry you through the whole game. It starts out giving more than the geologist and Mrs. Fruit, making it less of a potential burden before each of them get started, and it can continue to be doubled in value by the dame, whereas there's no symbol that doubles the value of faces. That can't be overstated enough btw, being adjacent to one dame is equivalent to the geologist simultaneously being adjacent to a shiny pebble and having an arrow pointing at him in the same turn. Also, it doesn't share the geologist/Mrs fruit weakness of being harder to feed in the late game, because of how frequently you find rare symbols

goldfish slept on imo, given that fish tank is basically a ridiculously common eater that takes no space (on top of being good in the likely event you get soap/bubbles early on, even if toddlers are more reliably good and also do that (granted toddlers give nearly a third of the payout and zaroff(s contract, if youre crazy) and comedian being the only way out))

I gotta disagree on putting Bronze Arrow in S tier. Nothing you said about it is wrong, it's just every time I use the damn thing it points off screen and does nothing, so I have a personal vendetta against it lmao

Bounty Hunter is kinda insane with Essence but I guess that is too rare to justify taking it lol. Wanted Poster Essence turns him into a stronger Zaroff with Zaroff’s contract
You should do a run where you pick 3-5 symbols from each category and you’re only allowed to take those symbols in a run
Now you should do an “optimal run” where all of your symbols you take are the highest out of the tiers
I think you succeeded well in this said goal of balancing out consistency and viability and the power of the items. I too think items that are meant for lategame and still not easy to execute are by default worse than the average item because on average you won't get any benefit from using them.

I got lucky with a hex of destruction today. Got it quite early, and in the first spin it ate my gambler and got me those coins before I could get a dice. Then it ate my dwarf, which was actually the biggest loss. But the next 3 spins... It ate 3 duds. More space for me! Wohoo. I "retired" it after that.

I feel like you slightly underestimate the power of "big immediate money + scaling symbols" synergies.
I've had multiple very successful runs like that with Geologist + miner (or even multiple miners / Dwarves + Dwarven anvil).
I don't think these eaters that destroy ores and give big money slow down the Geologist scaling that much, because a) they can share a symbol with Geologist, b) Geologist still has food on the table in the form of common gems like pearls, etc.
But the upside is pretty high, especially with multiple eats on one ore. Dwarfs + Dwarven anvil+ buffed ores was such a fun and profitable scheme, too.
I think this is actually a pretty balanced strategy, because the rare symbol tends to scale pretty slowly, so the bursts of money from eaters like Miner and Dwarf can be really helpful and more relevant than several buffs on the Geologist that will only give money long term, assuming he shows up every spin. And there's still like a decent chance you don't even miss out on the buffs because everyone can share this ore :D

okay before the video starts I want to make a bit of a prediction.
I think diver is such a strong strategy it is S tier, it has so many good symbols to "eat" and *nearly* all of are greater then 1 pers. ya got anchor which is like the best common. In early floors I will take a snail or a turtle if I think i'll make rent before they first go off. sand dollar, puffer, and jelly are 2 pers + something when diver eats. crab can just be a crab build or for the diver. fish eats bubbles now and also have fish bowl which is an amazing early game essence.
Oyster and pearls are kinds the only "bad" eats for diver
Like diver has become so good the pearl has become the last starting symbol for me to remove on the chance that I get diver.
So all the symbols are good at getting you past 375 gold, and then diver will carry you the rest of the way. easy S tier.
I didn't even take into account that most things diver eats beastmaster will buff too, only really solidifies for me that every symbol that feeds diver needs more respect on their names
The only time I've taken a bounty hunter so far was when I had the Shrine and Zaroff's Contract, cause then I was just taking every human I could lol. Didn't hurt that I had the Black Pepper too

How about a challenge in which you cannot choose any S-tier symbols?
Highlander really should have some sort of effect where gives a bonus to having singletons in your deck
My 1st idea would be that any single symbols gets 1.5 times. And duplicate symbols pay .5 time
actually, witch hex build even without holy water can be really good, becoming a no brainer if you have holy water or risky but rewarding with ritual candle. never take a hex of destruction or midas with it though. also, if a midas bomb hits a dwarf and the drink it's drinking, it gets applied twice meaning x490 value
