To all that are reading this, this is the ULTIMATE Jimmy Page mod. I’ve tried many. All had something strange about them such as dead spots, volume oddities, tone pot that has little to no change etc etc. this is the best. Thank you, thank you, thanks you. Everything works as planned. FANTASTIC. if you can’t build your own, spend a bit and buy this. I built my own and love it.
Thank you SO MUCH for this review. There's a lot of knock-off circuits out there. This one is the REAL DEAL. Congrats on your circuit!
Does this setup allow for a 6-way switch rather than a 3-way switch?
Can this set up be used on a 3 pick-up black beauty with a 6-way switch?
Really useful.Thanks
Thanks so much, Bob.
Thanks so much 😃
Thank YOU! Please like and subscribe.
Video deserves far more views than it has. Camera angles are clean and helpful, you give good tips on soldering technique, and you clearly label as you go. Makes following a breeze. Do you have any videos on the electrical theory behind why these push-pulls work the way they do? Eg. "Why does jumping these 2 specific prongs make the pickups run out of phase?"
Seeing someone do this is incredibly helpful. Ive had to a lot of self teaching without any completed circuits to look at for reference and I cant believe i didnt think to just bend the prongs directly to the pot casing to ground them instead of using a wire 🤦
Thank you for your genuine interest and appreciation. I can do a switch video if that’s something you’re interested in. PLEASE SHARE this video and help me get those views it deserves. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage Haha, you're welcome man. I'll be sure to pass this video around whenever someone needs an example of good soldering technique. And YES, a video on switches and their different possible functions would be incredibly helpful. I understand what a lot of the terms mean electrically (master vs series circuits, in-phase vs out of phase, etc.) but when it comes to wiring a switch to perform those functions I get completely lost (without a diagram from someone else, that is) I'd like to be able to have enough knowledge to make my own at some point.
Also wouldn't mind any book recommendations on guitar wiring/electrical theory in general. Just applied to be an electricians apprentice for a few different contracting companies and am thinking about getting a degree in electrical engineering further on down the line if I feel bottlenecked as a tradesman. Always looking to learn more. :)
Any chance of making a video on where to source the Jimmy Page #2 LP parts, with the DPDT push button switches?
Awesome video and process. Just rewired my LP and it's great. The only issue I found was the video shows Bridge Vol (Middle Green tab and bottom earth) opposite to diagram at GG website. The website has the middle tab to earth and the top tab as Green. I initially wired as per the video and the coil tap did not work. I ammended as shown in wiring diagram at website and it works perfectly. Not sure if this is an error in the video
Either way works. As long as your switch connects the series link to ground (earth) then it’s doing its job.
The website shows middle tab earth and bottom tab green... which is the right way???
The video says the caps go to middle lugs, but the diagram on the website is different. What is correct?
thank you!
Is it recommended to cut back the pickup wires, particularly when installing new pickups, to a comfortable working length for working on and installing the pots? Rather than keeping them full length and jamming the excess in the cavity.
Yes
Thank you for this informative video. I've learned a few things. The background music is too far up in the mix. See if you can down it a notch.
I am looking for a diagram for a 3 humbucker black beauty les paul that has the in and out of phase function. That uses a free-way 3-way prewired 6 position switch.
For a small fee I will design and draw the schematic for you.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage How much?
Is it possible to connect the capacitors in ‘50s style wiring?
This is “50’s style”
Great video, JSG! I DO appreciate the step by step verbal walk-thru...
I noticed your circuit uses a 2 to 2 terminal for the caps...what does this sound like against '50s and modern?
Hi Daryl thanks for checking out my video. This is still a 50s style circuit because of the path the signal takes through the capacitor… Being that we do not use logarithmic potentiometers on the tone circuit… Putting the tone cap on the number two lug moves the audio taper to the other side of the sweep.
In usable terms that means most guitar players turn their knob from 10 to about seven because that’s the usable range of it… Ours work backwards. I think it gives a better feel of playability to not have your tone knob work like a light switch.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage also...what pickup company are you using? I have a pair of Pearly Gates (Seymour) to go into my LP kit...
@@dasherf17 We use our own Private Stock 5 wire PAFs. Guitar Garage brand.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage (I need to check out your webpage...sorry...!) Thanks for your info...!
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage when you say yours work backwards, what does that refer to?
What are you using to color code the contact points on the pots? They aren't regular Sharpie markers, are they?
They are sharpie paint markers. Paint floats on solder and will not affect your connection.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage Thank you!
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage best of luck to you in your recovery from Hurricane Ian!
What temperature do you set your soldering iron to? Thanks for the great tutorial!
I like 600-650
600-650
What do you use for the push/push pots?
Yes
Hello. Your guide is great, but you use probably all the same, but I have two B500K volume and two A500K tone. Which in the video are A and which are B?
I use all audio taper pots just like every major manufacturer. If you wanna go crazy use linear taper on your tone knobs. A is audio B is linear.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage OK. I connected according to the scheme on the pages - Les Paul Jimmy Page wiring with 42 sounds. And I connected the potentiometers in reverse. Volume A500k and tone B500K. It plays great. I omitted resistors between the volume capacitors, then the potentiometers started to behave more refined.
Any chance of making a Part 2, where you connect it to the pickups?
Possibly
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage yes, please
Would be really useful
@@jerseyshoreguitargaragewould really appreciate it please mate cause now I’m stuck with a gutted guitar as I thought this was the complete video 😂
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was asking if this push pot setup would work on a black beauty LP with 3 pick-ups
No, youd need a diagram for a 3-pickup harness. This is intended for 2 pickups
Hi is this the same as emg lead colour?
.....no
Nice video ! Can I add treble bleed on this?
Yes you can!
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage Thanks!
But how do I white the pick ups? This doesn't show how to and I can't find the diagram that matches this wiring configuration
ua-cam.com/video/Vjd1EHFeSbc/v-deo.html
hi there, thanks for the tutorial, but the video link for pickups doesn't match the colors of the schematic... do you have the schematics for the other video?@@jerseyshoreguitargarage
I’m a bit confused. I followed this video to wire the harness, but the pickup diagram on the website doesn’t match. Is it the “Jimmy page 50s style” diagram.
If you do everything exactly as I have done it in the video… It will work without flaw
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage I eventually figured it out and it worked great. the diagrams on your website for this mod were slightly different- I didn’t know where to connect the +/- pickup wires, but your “Direct connect” was the one I needed. Thanks
Does this setup include a 6-way switch?
A SIX way switch? No. Why would it? It has 4 push pulls and a 3 way switch.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage I watched a video the other day that was a Jimmy Page Black Beauty with a Bigsby that had a 6-way switch selector
Damn you're good.
*you're
@@ScrewKeanu oops.
Thanks for trying to show a novice like myself how to do this. I know you mean well! But in my opinion you didn’t show in detail where all the wires are being solder. Hard to see because moving to fast. Perhaps you might have a diagram of the process.
Again I appreciate the effort!
The diagram is available for free on my website… I thought I mentioned that in the video but I might not have. You can always rewind it and watch it again… Or watch it at half speed.… We also sell completed units.
I never understood why people call this the "Jimmy Page" mod..
I've studied Page's guitars for a long time (since I was 14)
Firstly:Page didn't modify any of his electronics till 1980 when Zeppelin was going to release a new album with new sounds and technology,so from 1969-1980 there were no push pull pots or any of that..
Secondly, Page's #1 wasn't touched by Seymour Duncan till 1980 when the push pull pot was added so Page required a different pickup that could be split..And the whole lotta humbucker is a copy of that specific pickup..
Some history for everyone..
Page acquired his #1 from Joe Walsh ,the guitar had been sent to Akron Ohio,Virgil Lay to respray the neck after a headstock break, the neck was somehow shaved down extremely thin..
The common misconception is that the whole guitar was resprayed but actually only the neck was and this is evident in the way the guitar has aged, everything else has aged differently than the neck..
#1 is likely a early 1960 this is a prevalent thought due to the double white paf it originally came with those pickups only show up in later 59 and early 60 bursts...
So if the guitar was a 60 to start with which had a slightly thinner profile than the 59 and not as slim as the later 60 it's easier to assume why the neck ended up like it did...
The pickups in #1 were double white paf's with alnico 2 magnets..
Page would use these from 1969- 1972 when during the Australian portion of the tour his bridge pickup would die, he'd replace it with a chrome cover patent number pickup (later known as a t top) this pickup would stay in place during the duration of Led Zeppelin...
Page acquired his #2 1959 les paul in 1973 in lodon, it is a very late 1959 as it does have the double white paf pickups.. Page would have the neck shaved in 74 and the guitar would see more regular use for alternate tunings in 75-80 the guitars electronics would stay stock till the 80's..The only mods were a neck shave and Grover tuners the guitar would suffer a neck break near the heel in 76 when fans rushed the stage and started to destroy everything on stage...
Page's Dano was a 1959 DC it remained completely stock until the addition of a bridge in roughly 74-75 which would alter the sound of the guitar by a fair amount...
Page's #3 is a mysterious creature, there's photos of it in 1973 and it's clearly a 1950's les paul with thin cutaway binding, a deep top carve and different logo placement on the headstock as well as a smaller headstock all together.. Page would receive a 1969 Les Paul from Joe Perry and it would be be modified with a b bender this isn't the same #3 that appears in the song remains the same film or in previous pictures of Page, so he clearly has or had more than one...
Amps were kt88 powed Marshall's which were modified in New York just before 1973 and this is the amp that would remain until the end of Zeppelin and it was Page's longest running amp setup..
The Orange amps where mainly used for a thermain and a echoplex unit..
Page had one echoplex unit attached to his Marshall set up and another attached to his Orange/ thermain setup..
In the studio Page used such a wide variety of amps,so many that it's almost impossible to tell which is which and what song something was used on,in the studio he used WEN,Rickenbacker,Hiwatt, Supro, Fender, Marshall and on and on...
I hope this helps everyone, and hopefully this will spread and help people easily navigate through the horribly inaccurate "stories and accounts" of Page's gear....
You must be new here.
It would have been useful to start off with a description of what the goal is. Like what sounds are controlled by which switches. If you did this somewhere in the middle of all that soldering, sorry - my bad. I just did not have the patience to watch the whole thing without even knowing why you were doing this in the first place.
Wow dude…. Tell me you didn’t watch ANY of my other videos without telling me you didn’t watch any of my other videos.
It sounds like this channel isn’t for you.
@@jerseyshoreguitargarage Right and right. Probably not a great idea to assume other vids have been watched. You never know when TouTube is going to serve one up into someone's feed. At the very least, mention and provide links to prerequisites.
