- Recently signs are going up all over the tourist zones of Medellin telling foreigners to pack up and go home.
The reason for this? Skyrocketing rental prices due to "gentrification" which have made living in certain neighborhoods impossible for locals.
This negative attitude towards foreigners has some people worried as tourism to Medellin, Colombia reaches all time highs and the rise of rental prices has no end in sight.
In this video I interviewed a few Medellin locals to find out what they thought about this situation and foreigners in general.

I just got back from Cartageña and it was a hard watch. Most Americans were asking vendors to speak in English, do favors (can you call my friend), walking on stage at cafe havana, not dancing salsa when everyone else is dancing salsa. So many things stood out that if I were a local would irritate the crap out of me.
Cartagena is the worst city in Colombia - I've said many times that I hate it and you summed up exactly why lol now to mention the hoards of shady stuff going on in old town after 7pm every night of the week.
or Catagena, oh wow what a beacon of a city....where rule number one don't act like you have money.

Yo soy costeño, pero cuando oí al señor hablando mal de Bogotá me dí cuenta que el regionalista es él. Por el contrário, en Bogotá hay menos aumento de precios de la vivienda por la llegada de extranjeros que Medellín, donde si hay actualmente mas aoatia con los extranjeros, hasta les están poniendo letreros en la calle que dicen " gringos go home", cosa que no pasa en Bogotá ni en otras ciudades. Esi es una verdad, no un regionalismo como lo dijo el señor

no amigo..yo tambien soy costeño, Y si es verdad el paisa es muy cerrado y siemore le tira a lo suyo y lo de su tierra. Pero te voy a decir algo el problema del Bogotano es algo serio..Asta mi papa me dice , "mijo no ande por Bogota esa gente no es amable, es grosera, apatica y fria" Y a pesar de que e estado varias vecez por Bogota, a parte del trafico horrible, no me cae mal la ciudad. Pero no e interactudo mucho con cachacos. Pero no es normal q por ejemplo yo estoy en Cali en un sauna del gimansio y una muchacha de Bogota me diga " no me gusta Bogota el bogotano es muy apatico y poco amable, y en el mismo taxi saliendo de el gimasio el taxista me haga el mismo comentario sobre los Bogotanos> Mi esposa costen-a tambien dice lo mismo. Y muchas personas. El Bogotano siempre a sido complicado. Son "mala leche" como dicen los Argentinos. Incluso trbajando en los EEUU un Peruano me dijo , "de donde eres" y yo le digo, "de Colombia", Y el responde " pero no de Bogota verdad" ...si vez es una fama q ellos mismos se an ganado
@@donqaz5078 la pregunta nunca fue que piensan los colombianos de otras ciudades acerca de Bogotá, la pregunta fue que piensan los Bogotanos de los extranjeros que estan llegando y usd dijo que no trataban bien a los extranjeros, eso es mentira, hasta los tratan mejor que a los propios colombianos, no entendiste la pregunta. La verdad es que con tu acento no pareces nada costeño. Yo fui a pasar fin de año en Colombia y con mi amiga portuguesa nos pareció que la gente era muy amable, antes por el contrário los mal educados y los que querian tumbarte todo el tiempo siempre fueron mis paisanos los costeños, sobretodo los Samarios a Santa Marta le falta muchísima cultura, sin un solo semáforo para pasar al malecón, música a todo VOLUMEN en el centro histórico, hasta en la farmácia

@@AKJoel Safety is a concern for me there. Someone tried to rob me and my ex-wife in Cartegena last time I was there. Any tips to stay safe there for someone looking for a normal life and enjoy the culture? I like to have a few beers sometimes, but I am not into that crazy lifestyle.

Yo soy un profesional local, hasta hace unos meses vivía en Laureles arrendando. Cuando quise comprar apartamento me encontré que la oferta en Laureles es muy reducida y costosa, lo que me llevó a comprar en un municipio aledaño a Medellí. Hace varios años el sector donde compré no tenía el desarollo que hoy tiene, ahora es estrato 4 y hay varios proyectos inmobiliarios, uno de los centros comerciales más grandes de Colombia, vías, etc. Todo lo anterior hace parte del desarrollo de una ciudad, eso es crecer como urbe.
En que parte de la ciudad lo compraste?
La mayoría de locales nisiquiera sabe eso y piensa que todo es culpa de los gringos

I am of Indian 🇮🇳 race but living in the US (California). I am currently visiting Colombia for the first time. I know very little Spanish but realize I need to be at least proficient to a conversation level.
I am in Medellín and absolutely love it. I firmly believe in treating Medellín people with best intentions. I don’t do drugs nor am I into sketchy activities like strip club/looking for prostitutes.
Of course, curiosity of the beautiful women and how they carry themselves here is fascinating to me and a breath of fresh air. In US, more and more women are becoming unappreciative of good men.

@@AKJoel Hi, AK Joel. Dating market is very tough in the western world in general. Much of it has to do with feminism in general and the attitude of a lot of women and society (and within the last decade or so social media) has further fueled much of this. A lot of women have a delusional, over-inflated self assessment. I find so many of them lost…promiscuous…masculine boss-babes. This is why I find the women in Medellín much more desirable.
By the way, I am in Medellin - Poblado. If you are as well, would be cool to meet up with you one afternoon. For the past week, I was staying with a friend and today moving to an Airbnb also in Poblado. Cheers.

Colombia is known for rampant cheating, that most men and women are cheating on each other. Men are literally ungrateful in Latin America to the Women, and it is a breath of fresh air for us because while we still wish to be the head of the household we still respect the role of a woman. The Latin Men are spoiled to the idea of a good woman because they're in oversupply and in turn are disrespectful and ungrateful to what their women provide.

Just how many of these signs are going up and how many people are actually in support of them I wonder. Anyone can put a few signs up (I started reading about this a few ago so it’s nothing new and probably occurs elsewhere in the world).
I received a LOT of comments on my last video about gentrification and I'd say less than 5% of them were hateful saying things like "go home and leave our country" etc.

El costo de la vivienda en Medellín y alrededores no tiene como única causa la demanda inmobiliaria para inmigrantes y turistas. En realidad se genera de la reducida oferta inmobiliaria en contra de la demanda. Por otro lado, la genetrificación no sólo es por la llegada de extranjeros y no sólo afecta los sectores turísticos, pues, cuando se aumenta el costo de vida en un sector que obliga a desplazar a la población local, éstos se movilizan a otros sectores que a su vez aumentarán el costo de vida, pero, eso no es un problema en sí, es desarrollo que termina golpeqndo a determinadas familias.

He estado en Colombia muchas veces. siempre ha sido una buena experiencia para mí. pero yo no voy allí por turismo sexual o por drogas. Podrías hacerle a diez personas en colombia las mismas preguntas y obtener diez respuestas diferentes. puedo ver ambos lados. Las personas que colocan los letreros pueden simplemente estar tratando de presionar a los vendedores, etc. en Medellín para que no suban los precios. ¿quién sabe? Amo a la gente de colombia y soy 100% gringo.

@AK Joel This is not a situation unique to Medellin or Colombia. It is a world wide issue and only going to get worse as more and more people traverse across borders. Ultimately it is about demand and supply, if demand outpaces supply then prices have to rise, there is no other way around it. I sympathize with the locals who are faced with higher costs due to situations beyond their control.
In my opinion you cannot have unfettered capitalism. The government has to put brakes and other mechanisms to make sure that the population at risk is taken care of and at least have a piece of the pie. For example if foreigners invest in say a huge apartment complex they could designate 10% or X% is set aside for low income housing so that lower wage workers can afford otherwise you get a situation where people come to work in a place like Poblado and then have to spend hours commuting to and from work because they cant afford to live close to their jobs.
Florida, Texas and a few other states have started putting laws in place to restrict non citizen or resident Chinese from buying land for the same reason we are discussing here because they drove prices too high. I believe this happened too in Canada as real estate became unaffordable especially around Vancouver and maybe Toronto. Most Asian and Middle East countries dont have to deal with this because they straight up prohibit foreigners from owning land or real estate to protect their citizens.
In Portugal locals were complaining and protesting the same thing you are talking about. They had a program where foreigners could get residence or citizenship by buying real estate worth $250K or so and drove up prices and everything else which angered the locals. Now the law has been revoked.
Finally, you said something about you lived in a well to do area in Australia and anyone can do it if they work hard. That is not true because I do not think you are suggesting everyone who works hard because financially successful. There are a lot of needed service employees who work hard but just dont get paid enough so this problem will not go away simply because people work hard.
By the way the department of Health & Human Services in the US has the biggest budget of all federal agecies, close to $2 trillion dollars ( way higher than the defense budget). And most of the budget is spend on Medicare and Medicaid which are programs that help elderly and low income individuals to afford health care costs. Some of the budget is also dedicated to housing vouchers so people pay a fraction of the market rental costs or sometimes outright their rent is paid for. All this is to say government intervention is always needed but unfortunately in many countries there is very little of this or it is totally non existent and hence you get this resentment by locals which is justified even though I do not blame the foreigners either. It is the government that has to put laws to balance competing interests.
You make a good point, some people prefer to work in jobs that don't pay that high - but then they can't complain that they can't afford to live in the best areas of the neighbourhood. Honestly there's no excuse in a country like Australia. My Dad arrived with $100 in his pocket and now owns multiple properties - if you want it bad enough, it can be done.
@@AKJoel I applaud your father for his success but we are dealing with a bigger issue here that cannot be resolved by simply pointing to personal anectodes. What happens at a micro level does not always mirror what happens at a macro level. Besides working hard in Australia versus say a poor country does not yield same results. If the reverse was true, then a legitimate question would be why did your father not work hard enough in his own country and achieve the same back home. I am an immigrant myself living in the US.
And saying if you want it bad enough, it can be done sounds good but is not the reality for a majority of people. Thats just a fact. The locals did not create this adverse condition and one thing i know is politicians will act when it gets too hot. The currency of politicians is votes. When people are angry enough changes will be made and equilibrium (whatever that looks like) will be restored.

There is merit to what you're saying, but many people are "lying in their own Bed" in Rich Countries. There are numerous well-paying jobs and good COL in the United States in the Mid-west,Northwest Areas of America; people in the US are not choosing quality of life based on wealth, but amenities. They are literally going through subsidized poverty for "family&friends", "culture","nightlife", and "beaches". I'm not exaggerating this. You know how many homeless people that aren't mentally ill or poor people I've polled where I offered them a bus ticket to get a decent paying job and start over in the Mid-West/Northwest and they looked at me funny? A significant portion of people in poverty are choosing their situation. They genuinely don't care. Poor Whites in the Appalachias think like this, and Poor Blacks in the Northeast think like this. Making jokes about food-stamps/government assistance. It literally is a mentality.
I live in Colombia, been here for 12 years. The people are cool 😎. I’ve never had an issue. But if you’re one of those western cocaine sex addicts, it won’t be good for you. And if you can’t dance, it won’t be good for you.

I can’t dance and I do very well in Colombia. I even tell them I hate dancing and no plans on learning. The reason I do well is that I speak spanish and I’m South American and that is much bigger advantage than being able to dance.

What is happening in Medellin is a good think, in the long run. Because the city is getting expensive for locals, some of them will have to move to the neighboring towns. The influx of people in these towns will bring new businesses to fulfill the demand of these new residents, making Medellin a real metropolitan city, they think they already are a metropolis, but, believe me, the only metropolitan city in Colombia is Bogota. Even though a lot people don't see it that way right now, it is a good thing. It is time for Colombia to have another metropolitan city. Now, it seems that Cali is kind of wakening up, their infrastructure improving plans are good, eventually they'll overcome their problems, and it 10 years from now, COL could have several cities with metropolitan status.
I like the way you think haha and you're right about Bogota being the only Metropolis - Medellin still feels like a big town not a city.
Just because its Colombians who raise the prices does not mean that it is not a real issue that harms the local people. I am a gringo and I see how that must really hurt them. It seems like a deflection to put the blame back on them and minimalize their concerns.

A deflection?! Let people can do whatever they want with their money. You think the gringos want to pay more if they could pay less?! How about the government gets involved and sets the maximum price a hotel/AirBnB can charge. That would be one way to solve the problem because I can assure you that foreigners/gringos will wipe their ass with the hate posters and keep coming to Colombia
Ultimately, business owners shouldn’t be raising their prices. If they cared about the locals they wouldn’t. It is a real issue but it’s impossible for it to be the gringos fault.

Bien por el que tiene un inmueble y lastima por quien tiene que seguir alquilando, ni modo cada quien a lo suyo. Solo se puede desearles que encuentren un buen lugar donde meter sus checheres los que sufren este fenomeno y buena suerte. Lastimosamente un inmueble (aunque suene feo) no es caridad ni el ICBF es un negocio donde esperar tener la mayor rentabilidad despues de los egresos que conlleva una propiedad.
Creo que ya muchos de lo que alquilan inmuebles saben la mala idea que es dejar de ganar por "apoyar al projimo"
Un restaurante de alta cocina no se crea para que todos coman si no para el que pueda paga, lo mismo los arriendos; el que paga mas se lo rentan.
Problem is too many Americans tend to regard Medellin as the end all/be all for all things Colombian. And yes, of course, there are gringos who'll travel to Medellin for less savory pursuits (they do the same in Thailand, the Phillipines, the list goes on), but then again, there are two sides to that coin with a market more than willingly catering to that demand. There are so many other facets of Colombia though that Americans (and other foreigners) simply don't explore - Bogota, Cali, Cartagena. The best kept secret in my book is Bucaramanga. I've fallen in love with the country and I do hope to retire there someday, but for now I think Colombia is experiencing a few growing pains with the increasing influx of tourists. It's kind of a new experience for Colombians and it'll take time for them to adjust (particularly with gentrification and associated inflation, which here in the U.S. is simply a fact of life in large urban centers that also attract many tourists, e.g. Manhattan, San Francisco, Seattle, etc.). The various kinks will eventually get worked out and some Colombians may not be thrilled with the results, but in the end I think tourism will provide a significant financial boon for the country.
It really depends what you're looking for in life - maybe if you enjoy slower pace living Bucaramanga or some smaller towns could be fun. But no place in Colombia has great weather and as much to do as Medellin
Last year 125k columbians were apprehended at the border. We are sick of them here too.

Dude’s like you are the ones the we love to get and teach the price that people pay for having a lip. Be careful how you been expressing your feelings about Colombian people.
Colombians* not that hard to remember, buddy. Also, the US was built by immgrants, so you better settle down and buckle your seat belt. Latinos aren't leaving there anytime soon, especially Mexicans.
Thing is that the illegal Colombians only get the jobs that no American wants, starting that it’s payment is below the minimum.
On the other hand not only Americans also Aussies, Canadians, West Euros, etc they come earning in a currency 4 times more powerful than the peso and don’t have to pay any tax because they leave the country in the 5 month and 29th to not be a tax resident and then come back the next day to make the counter restart. Thanks to this locals can not compete against people earning 20+ times than them with the addition that they don’t have to pay any income tax as they aren’t working for a Colombian employer (they would never do that, they prefer to be homeless back home than work for an average Colombian business).
Colombians are not the only ones in the world who are not crazy about rude Americans. Actually, the whole world is tired of rude Americans. Even in the USA, people are tired of rude Americans. There are of course nice Americans and those are the ones I am not referring to. And obviously there are Colombians who Colombians don't like either. What is funny is that the USA has so much diversity and people who have entered by the millions. Colombians in the USA are a small minority compared to the rest. Oh, and not all Colombians enter illegally into other nations, including the USA. There are illegal American immigrants in Latin America (obviously you did not know this).
Entonces colombianos, no volveré a visitar su país. Para mí, hay mejores lugares para conocer. Lo que pasa es que la gente local no ven el beneficio aveces, eso trae seguridad y desarrollo (soy de la comuna 13) tengo 22 años y eh experimentado el cambio de esta comuna con la llegada de extrangeros, obvio no todos son buenos y buscan lo ilegal, pero es una minoria, la mayoria de gringos que veo a diario, solo desea conocer un poco de la cultura, son mas los extrangeros buenos, que malos y si se ha subido el arriendo, y las cosas pero no es por culpa del extrangero, es por culpa de las personas aprovechadas que aprovechan el boom que esta teniendo la ciudad

On that note, as a word of caution to my fellow "gringos" or any foreigners visiting Colombia for the very first time, if you want to avoid pissing off any Colombian you meet for the first time or having them think of you as a completely ignorant douchebag, do yourself a favor and don't bring up any topic involving Pablo Escobar or cocaine AT ALL unless THEY choose to do so during the course of your conversation. Trust me when I tell you they hate Pablo Escobar probably as much if not more than everyone in the Western world hates Adolf Hitler for example, and they absolutely FUCKING HATE IT when people mention those things as cultural references to Colombia. Obviously, context matters, but it's typically best to avoid those topics altogether if you're not really keen on approaching them in a respectful manner. Source: I'm married to a Colombian.

Not all foreigners go there for bad things. I hung out with friends in Colombia and I made close friends there. I still talk to a few people out there over the phone. I'm talking about visiting them again next year. But if people keep pushing this narrative that it's all foreigners or the majority it's going to make it impossible for foreigners to go there to experience the culture.
We don't need to push the narrative, Colombians see the trashy foreigners with their own eyes and it ruins it for the rest of us!
@@AKJoel Yes, but there are good and bad people all over the world. That's society in general. There will always be people with bad intentions in every country, whether they're foreigners or locals. The good always comes with the bad. But to only look at all foreigners and group them up into individuals that all have bad intentions is a false narrative. There are many good foreigners who visit Medellin, too. I know because I've met several of them in the city. People need to stop the narrative that every foreigner is the same when, in reality, they're not. It's bad locals as well as good ones in Medellin too. I saw a crime among locals in Medellin myself, but me and my Uber driver stayed quiet about it. But if a foreigner does something wrong then all foreigners get blamed for it. Huh!?!?
I'm not saying it's right, but yes that's how it is. Locals see foreigners acting like idiots, posting videos on YT showing how to buy prostitutes etc. Then they start to hate us all...
Most reirees would be better served by avoiding Medellin. There are other cities less crime ridden with similar characteristics. Anyone traveling to any city in Colombia for drugs and prostitutes is putting their life in danger. There are more positive qualities, than negative about Colombis. The people are the greatest natural resource of Colombia,

@@AKJoel as an older person I have had the same qualms about Medellin. I have not been but my best friend, who is younger, loves it. It appears to be a city for a much younger demographic. As you get older, you definitely become an easier target.
But if we were to be honest about, how many retires do you see strolling around the streets of any big city??
I don't know about Colombia, but other South American countries appear better suited for retires? I would imagine there are better places in Colombia also, perhaps Manizales?

@AK Joel Other cities like Bucaramanga, Pereira, Manizales, IE. These cities also have mild climates, less populated, more affordable housing, and not overpopulated with foreigners. Metro Bucaramanga has Floridablanca, Piedescuesta, and other communities that are excellent choices to retire. The Canyon de Chicamocha, San Gil, Barichara, are nearby, with breathtaking views and outdoor activities.

Im in Bogota now and it's true what dude said. The people here are not very welcoming. You ask someone something and they act like you've disturbed or are bothering them. I can't wait to go back to Medellin where the paisa culture is more welcoming and inviting especially if you're a foreign.

@@w4ka997 Venezuelans are not the only group that comes across the southern border illegally. I know many illegal Colombians living in the Miami/South Florida area. Most I know are males and came because the economy in Colombia is still very difficult. Most Colombians make about $300 - $400 USD a month and come to the States for better economic/job opportunities. Better than the $20 people make in Venezuela a month but still incredibly difficult for many.

The people are raising the prices because they see an opportunity to take more advantage of the tourism. Know one is putting a gun to these peoples heads and telling them to raise the prices. The foreigners that come here are keeping the tourism and alive. If you come to Colombia and its your first time, you have no idea if the prices are high or low from what their asking for in the bar, clubs, hotels and restaurants regardless, so these shitheads that are putting up these signs should probably acquire common sense to see that their own people are the ones that are raising the prices voluntarily and blame them

I think the only people complaining are the poor Colombians, wealthy Colombians are receiving major benefits from the tourist industry. And most wealthy Colombians cant complain because they own real estate in South Florida, NJ and Brooklyn, which causes gentrification in those areas as well. Therefore, it’s fairplay

I’m talking about the overall bigger picture. I’m assuming you’re Mexican, Americans don’t like Mexicans and Salvadorians coming into the country illegally for various reasons. Again, most Americans don’t see Colombians as a problem. And also, I’m an American who lives in Colombia so I see both sides. Wealthy Colombian nationals love the tourism, for example, they’re doing construction Parque Lleras in Medellin and are moving the working girls away to a different part of town, which will reduce the amount of tourist and locals who will go to that area. Now, with the working girls leaving the area, the locals in Park Lleras should be celebrating according to you, however, that’s not the case. In fact, many locals are very upset because of the lost of business. Which goes back to my first point, only the poor Colombians who don’t own anything or can’t reap the benefits from tourist and expats are complaining

I am planning to spend two weeks in Medellin later this year and my attitude is that as a white American I am their colonial master and they are my slaves and they must grovel in front of me. And speak English. I hope that this will be understood.
Seriously, a lot of the tourism to Medellin is sex and drug tourism, something like Amsterdam on steroids. Why else would someone from the US go there? If you want to experience Latin American language and culture, Mexico is next door. If you want any type of natural beauty imaginable the US has it. Plus in Medellin there is a very real risk of being robbed at gun point and the air is polluted. With that said, the dollars flowing to the hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, etc of Medellin can in general only be helping the local the population. And tourists certainly aren't causing any more crime than is there already.

To answer your question, yes Mexico is awesome and has a lot to offer but Colombia is much cheaper to live. Also I'd say Colombians are generally friendlier and more welcoming than Mexicans too - especially for you Americans (for obvious reasons 😂)

@@AKJoel I'm not yet a Latin American expert however I did live in Mexico City for a few months five years ago, staying in Condesa. It was very nice, quiet, safe, inexpensive and people were very friendly. In particular the ladies were often very happy to meet American men (I am referring to regular women, not working girls). The altitude is a problem for some people and the air quality is bad there as well.
Condesa is now one of the most expensive neighborhoods in all of Mexico.
I think you're over simplifying the reason for inflation. And calling foreigners "gringos" rather than "extranjeros" loads your interview with a negative slant from the get go.

El paisa es muy cerrado y siemore le tira a lo suyo y lo de su tierra. Pero te voy a decir algo el problema del Bogotano es algo serio..Asta mi papa me dice , "mijo no ande por Bogota esa gente no es amable, es grosera, apatica y fria" Y a pesar de que e estado varias vecez por Bogota, a parte del trafico horrible, no me cae mal la ciudad.
