I just started painting again after many years. Such serendipity… your video pop up just as I was about to use masking. Thank you for the review you’ve given me the confidence to move forward. ❤
Thank you Kristin this layered depth tutorial is very effective and love the Aspen trees. The contrast of the white tree trunks is beautiful and adding the brown marks really finishes it off. I have always used dish soap on my brushes and works a treat too. Very effective what negative painting can achieve and is stunning with the snow. Those bumpy tree shadows really brought it to life so all rounder works wonders. Thanks for sharing 😊
You created a wonderful visual image using various layers of the masking tape. While watching it at one point I said to myself “that is negative painting “ and 2 seconds later that is what you said!
I struggle using mask, but love the effect, and wouldn’t think of using one of my better brushes, till now! Thanks so much for this, can’t wait to try it!❤
Absolutely love and will try, being new to painting and now great at drawing… 🤔, hope we can see other examples of when we could use this technique, can’t think right now of other designes that would lend itself to this… I would love to explore more. Big thanks 🥰🎨
@@mariacohen5179 I’ve used this when I want to save patches of tan hair on an animal, the yellow center of a flower, or the brighter green areas on trees and grass. I would love to explore this concept more in the new year!
I love the effects in this technique! Maybe the Windsor & Newton masking fluid handles heat guns better than some other brands, I’ve been told not to escalate the drying process of masking tape as it can damage paper. But hey! I’m up for the experiment! I love your videos and information. Your introduction of a limited palette was a great benefit to me. Thanks for the good stuff!
This is genius and the result is gorgeous! Question - what did you dip your brush into before dipping into the masking fluid? Some sort of protector, I'm guessing. Thanks.
Thank you, Kristen! One question is on using a heat tool when using masking fluid- I have heard repeatedly to not do that but to let everything dry naturally?
@@lindacarlson8515 I try to let it dry naturally for as long as possible and then I do a quick dry on low to make sure it’s super super dry. I’ve ruined paintings before when I thought it was dry, but wasn’t so I always do this a bit at the end to make sure
Maybe I shouldn’t quit my day job… lol. Help! I received a drawing and painting kit. I just tried my first watercolor with horrible results. The kit came with white brushes or golden yellow brushes. The book didn’t say which was for what. I used both and when it comes to clean up I found it was easier to clean the golden yellow vs the white. I started off just using one color… green. Now I can’t completely get the green out of the white brush. Normal or not????? Do you just leave remaining paint in tray dish to dry or clean up???? The paint came in tubes.

What a great idea for the masking fluid. Something to try. I never would have thought to do that. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful tutorial, Kristin. Thank you!

@@Judith-z3z haha yes! Just a little bit “easier” in some ways to visualize it and get the shapes you want, but it’s the same concept
That came out so great!!
I love this and can’t wait to try it!

@@margaretpinsent6388 it’s dish soap! Protects it perfectly
