Hi! Just saying hello to let you know that I stopped by to watch amber class again. I have definitely lost count on this one. I really enjoy your videos that wind up being part science class and part jewelry lab. 🤓
I think many of the pieces were reconstituted amber, which is where they take little bits of amber and melt it into shapes. It's still technically amber and so it will floresce
nice video, most of your real amber is treated, those little markings inside, the tiny cracks are also known as sun spangles and are from heat treating the amber to get a desired color
The large bead string (that had flakes in it that floresced) is called "reconstituted amber." I buy a bunch of it- they take real amber bits from processing and mash them together (it appears to me that they encase it in plastic, but it does contain bits of real amber)
Nancy. It is possible depending on the density of the resin/plastic used to encase the amber dust/pieces and the buoyancy provided by the amber content.
Yes I had that too! But I discover a difference between natural and reconstituted ones is the sweet smell gone. Real Amber should smell sweet that's why many insects and flower pellets always found as fossil inside this Amber.
Interesting bit of info... Amber is a "Witching stone" and is used by witches who have made the status of elder or respected teacher as a sign of their knowledge and power. If you're ever at an estate sale and a little old lady had lots of Amber (or even better, amber and Jet) jewelry, she may have been a witch 😊
I have Amber From Russia and the Jewelry is hallmarked by a known Amber retailer . They glow only under a certain UV wavelength - so do not discard if not glowing-
Hey just wanted u to know that the button shape thing is not amber it’s called the sand of amber in Arabic. So after the raw amber has been cut and shaped there will be residue witch then is added with different substances
Thanks Margaret, I have some pieces that I believe are amber and this video confirmed, I did the light test and when I saw different glow hues, I doubted. Now I'll try to do the others tests. Thanks
Thank you for the warning on the UV light and to wear sunglasses. I have been wanting to get one of these lights but it hadn't occurred to me that I would need to protect as well. I mean, it's a 'flashlight', rrriiiiiiiiiiiight........so, ya. Thanks for that!
Hi! Not much of a jewelry collector, but I do have what I think are amber pieces of jewelry that have been handed down. Can’t wait to test them! Learned at lot! By the way, partway through your feed (salt water test), your feed got hacked by someone selling web games. I say hacked, because you were still talking in the background. I had to close and reopen the app to get rid of it! Don’t know if this happened to anyone else, but wanted to let you know.
Video is very helpful. I have two strings of Amber that came in the same Goodwill box but both are unmarked and while they look very similar there are some differences. One floats in salt water and the other does not. I'm not sure why this would be. Both of them fluoresce equally in shades of yellowish green and both of them have static electricity although not very much. They are also warm to the touch and lightweight. So I believe they are Amber but what would make the ones not float. I don't see any metal hardware or closures or wire and the cord it is strung on is some kind of string.
To my understanding Real Amber Floats on water but some also sink. How about teat it in normal water see does both floats? If yes I believe is Amber but of different materials, different places Amber have many types and weight also different.
New sub here! Thank you so much for this video it helped me figure out that the brooch I bought is actually real amber! It looks very much like the piece you used for the static test. :)
I like your background! I have a screen and you gave me a great idea to use that if I ever do UA-cam videos I guess it might make a nice background to photograph my items thanks for your info.
You're freakin great! 😂 I was educated and entertained. And it's clear you have a beautiful spirit. Thanks so much for the valuable information, and the laughs. I appreciate you! Blessings!
I really need an advise with my shopping. Im looking for a UV light torch and a uv protection glasses. All of it is for my partner she is passionate about amber and want to star to hunt it in beaches but I really need a good advice before buying any product which could be not really good for finding amber. Any recommendations base on your own shopping and experiences? Many thanks
I got a lot from shopgoodwill that was supposed to be all amber in 925 silver. Out of all of it only 2 pieces glow and very very faintly. Sort of annoyed.
Hi, i have an amber with plant inclusions and there pass test with uv light shown white blue fluorescence, float in salt water, i'm burn it with my matches produce black smoke and rubbing it smell like pine but here don't have any electrostatic i have tested?
Happy and sad to find this video. Had purchased an item from abroad in time for Christmas and seems to contain 5 real amber segments and 9 non amber. The 5 amber are either clear or cloudy yellow and flouresse intense neon yellow. All the rest do nothing. Sad but at least I know. Using my knowledge now to talk to the jeweller (politely...for now ha).
I did the rubbing test and my tumbled amber didn't pick up any paper, but it did float on salty water. It even float on plain water. Is this a fake amber?
I know this video is oldbut if anyone happens to see this and knows the answer i have some beads that look imo very much like amber and floresce a similar green to whats seen in the video. I was just concerned because i had read some plastics floresce but i wasnt positive if the plastic would be green or a dif color
When you cut and carve stone you get dust from the process. It is possible that the amber dust from cutting pieces into beads etc is then used within resins and plastics to create fake amber.

I could tell at first glance that those ear rings are not Alexandrite, which is very rare - it's Labradorite! :)
Sheila Taylor, :) Thank you very much!! :)

I mean natural Amber compared to re-Amber.
these Amber pieces are STUNNING!!
Interesting . I was wondering about amber .
Nice to see someone who does their homework .
Thank you for sharing this .
Yes some plastics and acrylics can fluores under uv light

Thank you so much for this video. I was convinced the newest necklace I bought for my toddler was fake but it passed the tests
Thank you for this video! I picked up a sterling piece with what I think Is Amber. I’ll definitely be trying these techniques.
Awesome!!
The necklace looks like confetti lucite which is a little fluorescent but not as much as amber.
Thank you for the class. I will feel way more confident when shopping and thrifting.

Thank you!
What's the wavelength
If you dip amber in hot water it gives you the odor you described

Wahab Othman, :) Thank you very much!! :)
This was super informational and her tone is so sweet :)
Wool, fur or silk are known for creating static.
Thanks Margaret, I have some pieces that I believe are amber and this video confirmed, I did the light test and when I saw different glow hues, I doubted. Now I'll try to do the others tests. Thanks

I didn't remember I had this reply one year ago😅 sorry for this late reply, I believe you already becomes a expert in your hobby

Google said it glows green-ish or blue-ish but I see here some of your real ones glow different colours? Can I know why?
The yellow button is call 密蜡 'mi la' it's have mixture of UV reactive and UV active materials from a tree.
It's call beeswax and its other types under Amber.
I really enjoyed learning about Amber!! Thank you Margaret, for the educational video!! Very useful!! :)
Very cool vid! Thank you! Can I ask what the ratio of salt to water for the salt water test was?
I'm not sure exactly how much I put
Hi thanks for your uv example saved me a lot of work and no more burnt fingers!!
Hey Rebecca Pickard, Thanks so much for watching!

If we did this in science class, I would've never gotten bored of school lol
Does it matter what kind of UV flashlight you use? Is LED ok?
I don't think LED would work
You wants Amber ? Contact me Facebook or this number 00252621131135

I read that Amber will powder when scratched. "If it flakes, it's fake."
Thanks so much, Saint Steven!
Hi, i have an amber with plant inclusions and there pass test with uv light shown white blue fluorescence, float in salt water, i'm burn it with my matches produce black smoke and rubbing it smell like pine but here don't have any electrostatic i have tested?
The sweet smell might be partly ozone produced by the static electricity

Thanks for the info. Very helpful!
So glad u did this video...you saved me from embarrassment by unknowingly saying that it is amber...and it's not so hey thanks
Kathy Carlson, :) Thank you very much!! :)
I did the rubbing test and my tumbled amber didn't pick up any paper, but it did float on salty water. It even float on plain water. Is this a fake amber?
In my experience real amber will float (just) in seawater, but sink in freshwater.
I know this video is oldbut if anyone happens to see this and knows the answer i have some beads that look imo very much like amber and floresce a similar green to whats seen in the video. I was just concerned because i had read some plastics floresce but i wasnt positive if the plastic would be green or a dif color
Just mind boggling that amber can float
Kathy Carlson, Right??
Are you using a black light or a UV light?
Uv
