  • I've run into this problem at least 3-4 times in the last month with different early Bally/Stern solid state games: The game boots and appears to work but you can't start a game and/or many switches/buttons don't seem to work? Before you dive deep, try this simple, easy trick.

Hi. I have a 1980 stern galaxy pinball machine I am trying to get working again. Its been sitting for almost 40 yrs and so far I have replaced the mpu board, the rectifier board and the j1 and j3 connectors and terminals for the rectifier board. I also just replaced the solenoid driver board with an alltek driver board. Before I replaced the solenoid driver board the machine would go into attract mode and if I hit the credit button it would try to go into game mode but some solenoids wouldnt work like the out hole or drop targets but the flippers worked. After installing the alltek board I dont here any solenoids testing and it looks like its in attract mode ( a lot of lamps arent lighting) but now I cant get it to go into game mode when I press the credit button.
Any tips or suggestions would be very helpful, thanks.

Man, I thought I got lucky and discovered this fix for a Hot Hand I picked up a couple of weeks ago. Exact same problem, boots, and can cycle thru all the test modes but after a single time of putting a coin in and starting a game, it rebooted and now I can't credit up the game. The difference is that my machine as new MPU so it's not the pins on the board....that would have been nice to have that easy a fix. Of course it's got the screeching SB100 sound board that I had to disconnect until my rebuild kits shows up, but I don't thing having disconnect would prevent it from crediting up.

I've found another common failure point for switches is around the coin door, because usually the wires get pinched. So if the coin door switches are not working, poke around there for a sign a wire is broken, kinked or disconnected.

Make sure you replaced your capacitors on the driver board. I've read bad caps can cause reboots
