All the drivers say the same: Alonso is the best driver of their generation.
payoramone just want to lay this down, alonso did not comprehensively beat trulli in 2004. before trulli fell out with briatore and the whole renault team at the french grand prix, he was beating alonso 6-2 in qualifying and races. trulli "mysteriously" dropped off the radar after round 10 and it was clear what was happening. hamilton would have beaten alonso by quite a margin in 2007 if not for mclaren messing up the final rounds for him. other than the first 2 races, alonso never looked faster than hamilton for the rest of the season besides maybe italy. every other race hamilton was either significantly better or they were even. i believe alonso is superb and one of the most complete drivers on the grid, but please don't talk as if he's unbeatable.
Mark FormulaRacer Of course, Alonso is beatable. Schumacher was the hardest rival. And Michael beat Alonso many times. But the rest of drivers, are not in those top level. Nobody. And about 2007, let me remember for you this: "We wasn't racing against Kimi, we were racing against Fernando." -- Ron Dennis, GP China de 2007. And remember Hungarian qualifying..... In a qualy, Alonso could lose. In a race, too. But in a whole championship, Alonso is the best.
payoramone i wasn't talking about schumacher, but i do believe he was better than alonso in his prime. about 2007, that didn't happen until late in the season. and i agree that in at least the last 2 races alonso's car could've been sabotaged or not paid as much attention to as hamilton's. but if you look at the season as a whole hamilton was the better driver anyway. hamilton led alonso in the championship for virtually the entire season. the score was 107-95 before the final 2 rounds - more than a race win.
Mark FormulaRacer Obviously, it's difficult to know what really happened in that 2007. For me, the break point was at Monaco GP. The press put a lot of pression on Ron Dennis, remember Lewis angry, talking with the press and asking why he had to pit another time, when he wanted to stay out and try to pass Alonso. From this GP, Ron Dennis decided to support Hamilton. He was a rookie, he was in the team since he was a child, and he was british. As I said, from this GP all the things was rare in Alonso's car, strategies, tyre pressures, tyres choices, ... Just after the Monaco GP, the championship was: Alonso 38 Hamilton 38 Massa 33 with Alonso 2 wins, Massa 2 wins, and Kimi 1 win. But if you look the whole championship from Canada and ahead, you could see that something happened to Alonso. What do you think? Oh come on, don't be naive. This is F1. For me it's clear. The whole team was against him and supporting Lewis. And what did Hamilton? Take the championship, and throw it to the garbage. Here you are your winner, Ron. Next year, the same. The only difference: the rain and one corner, but Lewis was about to lose the championship one more time! Incredible. Do you think if the team was supported Alonso in 2007 and a theorical 2008, Alonso would lost the first year, and to be about to lose the second?? Are you serious? With that winning car, Alonso was finished the championship 3 races before the end.
payoramone that is an incredibly biased view of the 2007 season. nothing happened to alonso from canada onwards. if anything did happen it was to hamilton, who was a rookie and getting into the groove more and more each race and started overwhelming alonso in the championship. it would've been foolish to give preferential treatment to alonso at this point. alonso is a top level driver, arguably the best in formula 1, and it is entirely possible that 2004 and 2007 were just bad seasons for him. but he is absolutely not in a class of one like you say he is. i would say at least hamilton, ricciardo, and vettel are all on his level.
Vettel has won his 4 championships because he had the best material available, and a teammate he was able to keep in check. This year, Vettel is outqualified and outpointed by an essentially rookie-type teammate, while he is still in the prime (agewise) as an F1 racer. For that reason, it may be possible to put Vettel and Alonso into the same category---although Vettel is the smarter individual in terms of his analytical understanding of F1----because Alonso also needed the best car to win. But there is clearly no way of comparing these 2 drivers with Michael Schumacher, who won 2 F1 titles with a technically inferior Benetton (when compared to the Newey-designed Williams), and who never signed a contract with an already winning team. MSC joined Ferrari in 1996 when Ferrari was a laughing number in F1, and he converted---along with his handpicked Team Staff---Ferrari to a consecutive championship winner, and won many races even when the car was not the technically best package....Therefore, it is impossible to look at Vettel as one of the "all time greats"......Schumacher dominated that sport for more than a decade, and between 1992 and 2004, F1 was a competition between Michael Schumacher and Adrian Newey, a competition that MSC won with 7:6. The Newey-team drivers were essentially replaceable, and even mediocre drivers like Hill, Mansell and Villeneuve could win in those technically superior cars....
Mansell was a mediocre driver by all standards...He won ONE championship, driving a technically superior Williams, so that HE ESSENTIALLY ONLY HAD TO BEAT HIS EVEN MORE MEDIOCRE TEAMMATE....

Alonso gets a bad rap from alot of people but this interview shows that he has good character. I used to think he was an egomaniac but now I really respect what he does on and off the track.
Alonso is the best driver today..however, he got extremely lucky in 2006..and 2005 of course, when Ferrari had the shit tyres..Schumacher was already dominating alonso in the end of 2006, but a blown engine and ficisella spoiled it..shit happens tho,
Alonso is the best driver yes, also he gets so much out of bad material. But he threw 2 championships away back in 2007 and 2010. Sometimes he was unlucky with his cars but sometimes he just wasn't there when it counted unlike Vettel 2010. This is the only flaw I see in Alonso.
Alonso deservedly won the championship in 2006, but in 2005 he had a lot of luck, because McLaren still had problems, Kimi was the best in 2005. Now Fernando is the best driver on the grid, in 2012 showed that he is the best.
Marek Krudzielski If kimi just managed to lap villenueve as a professional in nürburgring '05 he would have won the race, and mclaren would have been constructor champions. the 2005 mclaren was a hell of a great car, monty won 3 races with it. I think kimi was at his best at 2003, but the fia robbed his championship.
i have to deal with that from all senna fans who discredit every single bit of schumacher's ability. they say its just the car, but when they talk about senna, it was pure senna! now dont get me wrong right senna was pure class!but was always chasing after the best car, went to MAC as it was the best then left them to join WILL but schumacher never did that. he won titles in a bennetton when everyone thought the senna/williams partnership was untouchable, and then went on to dominate with ferrari
I wonder how it would be if Shumi and Senna had raced together and then Alonso had joined them. I cannot believe anymore the fact that they would not want to retire anytime. And there is Jenson and Kimi and Massa. Unbelieveable man, unbelieveable.
Well if 2007 2010 and 2012 happened slightly differently then would have been 5, and that’s not even looking at what if he had a competitive car the years after (not that he had the best with Ferrari)
Have you forgotten that Ferrari also used that system? It's only become illegal because the last races would have been as unconcerned as in the Schumacher-era or in 2011. But if I mentioned 2011, Red Bull cried that rule-changes be cancelled. Alonso and Renault won both titles even FIA tried to prevent them when they could. That would be the biggest shame if Schumi gets the title at the green table.
Hamilton was matching his pace, not because he was as good as Alonso, but because Alonso was being treated as a clear number 2 driver. That is why I lost all respect for Mclaren; they signed him up and basically said "oh and I hope you don't mind this kid coming and learning a bit from you" only then to completely favor Lewis over Fernando. 07 belonged to Alonso. You are correct in saying he did win 2 titles in a superior car, but then again does that mean Schumi only deserves 3 of his titles?;)
And what does that mean ?, then he went to teams that, like Mclaren, did not let him competitive in equality conditions or teams that did not have the second best car.
Alonso will be never forget in F1 History. Because he is T H E Example how the best F1 Driver destroys his F1 Carrer by wrong Decissions, and wrong Team Changings. Other Guys like Vettel and Hamilton got 4WCs, while Alonso drive somwhere in the Midfield. 2007 chang to McLaren was a Mistake, if he stay at Renault, the Team would keep the 2005/06 Performance. But they lost one important Year of development. Than he drove 08/09 in the Midfield for Renault, while Ferrari fight for the WCs. And right after he come to Ferrari, the Newey/Red Bull Dominance started. And than... after he go to McLaren... McLaren desited to use Honda Engines again -_- ... Best Driver in the Grid. Sad Carrer. Bad Decisions.
Obi-Wan Kannabis I don't know what to make of this comment. It's certainly a factual statement that Michael was driving during the two seasons that Fernando won. But to try and correlate Michael's absence with Fernando _not_ winning is...well, to be honest, a post hoc fallacy.
He hasn't destroyed anything, no one on the planet who knows F1 would suggest Sebastian or Lewis were better drivers than Alonso and they both have more championships. How many you win doesn't really relate to how you stand in the greatest of all time.
@poussyledzep quite possibly. the way he;s been steadily shaking the rust off and improving so far this year suggests to me that a couple of podiums or better might come towards the end of the year, and if he has a competitive car next season, he stands a VERY good chance of that 8th title.
I don't understand how anyone can hate alonso or anything less than have the greatest of respect for him. You hate him for beating Schumi? Why? What makes all the greatest drivers so great is that they had another driver to really test them. Senna wouldn't have been so great with Prost (and vice versa) just like Schumi wouldn't be so great without Alonso (and vice versa)
But looking back it was the secret use of mass dampers that gave the reno the edge. That and Michelin working one on one with reno on the ideal contact patch suspension project. Once the mass damper came to light everyone copied it then it was banned. And Reno no longer won Driver or Constructors titles anymore. Oh, lets not overlook the performance the Michelin tires that meet the max width rule when new but got much wider as they wore out. Remember that one Alonzo?
@themomentone That is not actually true - what many people see as corrections are actually just the steering wheel jumping around in their hands because of the worse suspension and no power steering. Yes, they did have to make more, but they didn't have to be as precise as they do in modern times.
You can not get into Formula 1 without having lots of money. Moving up all the different classes of driving takes a lot of money and dedication. Just to get a test drive in an F1 car is a lot of money. Ben Collins (who was formerly The Stig on Top Gear), was trying to make it into Formula 1. He got spotted by a low-end team and was invited for a test drive. He took up the offer, but then they asked for $1million just for the test drive. So he had to decline. From his autobiography.
people keep on whining about how vettel's only winning because of the car. alonso's championships with renault... renault power + mass dampers + launch control. not to mention the mechanical failures that was plaguing schumi and kimi. their misfortunes likewise helped alonso a lot.
im pretty sure every driver isn't happy when their car is not up to speed. I am just curious, who do you consider a true champion in the current driver line up ?
Both eras have pros and contras. Although these years there are more overtakes, pilots have to drive far below their own and their car's border and a second class driver can driver like a world champion. There are no spins, no accidents even neither if it's raining.
Being a Ferrari fun for manay years I have to admit that Alosno was two times worthy Champion. As for this year..i hope Ferrari will push harder and harder and Alonso clinches his 3rd!
Ferrari vs nobody until luckily Alonso came along. Fuck the old Hockenheim ring, nothing back then is better than what its like now. Bernie, you are a genius!
@KKZReset11 Troubles come along in F1. It's the way it goes. Don't forget about his first win at Monza in a Torro Rosso. Pole and win. He'll soon be double World Champion. He's definitely one of the best on the grid if not THE best in terms of raw, natural talent.
Yes, I know, but he wasn't one of those kids with a really rich dad, thats why I said ORIGINALLY. He was very privileged to be picked up by McLaren. He wasn't a "rich boy".
Alonso the second biggest cheater after Schumacher got what he deserved ! He deserved the championship in 2012 ,but i was so satisfying to see him lose the championship and seeing his disapointed face !
I don't really think Schumacher had Alonso in the same way as Prost/Senna or Stewart/Fittipaldi. The real battle and test of his skills was in my opinion Schumacher/WilliamsF1 or Schumacher/Häkkinen. You could even say it was Schumacher+Brawn/Newey :D
You mean : Mercedes vs Ferrari Hakinen vs Schumi Coulthard vs Barrichello When Ralph drove in BMW Williams But yeah, Old tracks, old rules. No KERS. The F1 was good, when skill did all the job, not these mechanics and electronics. The driver did all the job. We need back this kind of F1
that year was pretty straight forward between the Ferraris and the Renaults.Definitely the best 2 cars in that year.Formula One was brilliant in those days.Cars looks better and performs even better. These days Formula One is very artificial.Tracks like Bahrain,Abu Dhabi,Korea and Singapore are really crappy. Also these it's all about exhausts and that.Plus Red Bull just have the quickest the car around these days.
Hamilton is probably one of the most entertaining driver in the field, and Vettel is extremly fast. But I have to say I miss the old days especially Schumi vs Mika one of the best rively in the history of F1
so basically he deserved 4 titles and the others were won because he got ferrari there. alonso will make ferrari the number power house again i think and i hope he wins another 2 more titles. his done what schumi did. won 2 titles then went to ferrari got close twice in a slower car. who knows alonso might do it on his 3rd title challenge for ferari just like schumi did. alonso is up there with senna, schumi and prost.
senna was the greatest its just a shame that he died. notice schumi won all his titles when senna was not around, if senna was still alive i bet micheal would only have 3 titles, and he may not have ended up dominating at ferrari!

Maybe so but DRS kind of existed in the 60's before 3 or 4 teams gave up the technology as it was too hard to rely upon, not too long before that all the teams were very close to having to give something else up. "Aerofoils" themselves. Lucky for us F1 persisted with wings, DRS not so, until its popped up again with the same teething problems that existed then and once sorted we'll forget what all the fuss was all about, just like the wings! I love DRS, it might be fake but its spiced things up!
Alonso says it: His titles have way more value than others as he won against Schumacher when MSC over the year also had an equal car(first half Renault better, second half Ferrari). Vettel is a sore loser...

Any doubt?
Does not matter how many times you win. The key is against who and how.
Alonso has never lost with nobody. Always win. And 3 times 2º.
Hamilton only has won Rosberg. With Button win and lose. With Alonso just a draw.
Vettel only has won Webber, and lose against a rookie.
Any doubt?
If there is a chance to see Alonso with a good car (not necesary the best), you will see who's the best driver. Just ask the others.
Mark FormulaRacer
Of course, Alonso is beatable. Schumacher was the hardest rival. And Michael beat Alonso many times.
But the rest of drivers, are not in those top level. Nobody.
And about 2007, let me remember for you this:
"We wasn't racing against Kimi, we were racing against Fernando." -- Ron Dennis, GP China de 2007.
Mark FormulaRacer
Obviously, it's difficult to know what really happened in that 2007.
Just after the Monaco GP, the championship was:
Alonso 38
Hamilton 38
Massa 33
with Alonso 2 wins, Massa 2 wins, and Kimi 1 win.
Lets go baby, El Plan 2022, love you Nando!!!
Say what you want about Fernando Alonso, love him, hate him, but he ended Michael's reign.
SCHUMI THE GOD FOREVER AND EVER
You have to listen carefully guys, "I was extremely lucky to win the last 2 titles". Alonso knows that Michael is the best.
lol... Michael managed to get inside you.. I love how awkward every motorsport interview is.. We all want to beat each other!
Alonso's English has improved a lot since then.
Thank you mass damper!
I am still very very sad that this ultra reliable Ferrari broke down in two crucial weekends at the end of that season...
Mansell a mediocre driver? What the hell is wrong with you?
Mansell was a mediocre driver by all standards...He won ONE championship, driving a technically superior Williams, so that HE ESSENTIALLY ONLY HAD TO BEAT HIS EVEN MORE MEDIOCRE TEAMMATE....

Nice to know there are others.
You can count 2012 too, so many things were in his favor at Brazil.
Alonso broke his engine in Monza 2006...
Does anyone else feel breathless seeing fernando speak?
Best driver 2016/17
i have to deal with that from all senna fans who discredit every single bit of schumacher's ability. they say its just the car, but when they talk about senna, it was pure senna! now dont get me wrong right senna was pure class!but was always chasing after the best car, went to MAC as it was the best then left them to join WILL but schumacher never did that. he won titles in a bennetton when everyone thought the senna/williams partnership was untouchable, and then went on to dominate with ferrari
One question I have is what happens when Trulli “gets inside you”. Like does the whole train go in as well?
1:47 "at one point Jarno Trulli got inside you"
Qué???
Hes a great driver !!
I wonder how it would be if Shumi and Senna had raced together and then Alonso had joined them. I cannot believe anymore the fact that they would not want to retire anytime. And there is Jenson and Kimi and Massa. Unbelieveable man, unbelieveable.
well said... alonso is a terrific driver. he should, in my opinion, retire as a three or four time world champion
Well if 2007 2010 and 2012 happened slightly differently then would have been 5, and that’s not even looking at what if he had a competitive car the years after (not that he had the best with Ferrari)
It was 'berry' good to fight with him and winning the champion CHIPS when Michael is still on the track has more 'balyu'.
prad s Everything was as planet, we managed to ovataka in the first piss stop
😆😆😆😆👍👍👍👍
😆😆😆😆👍👍👍👍ffs 😆😆😆
And on top of that, the next season, engines will be smaller and turbocharged, we all want the V10s back in business.
I have to say, the way he drove in the last race, he should have been the 2006 champion. And then 2007 and 2008.
No 😂
1:24 alonso will eat some nachos with champion chips
xD
Mhh He s a perfekt driver . But it needs more
Fernando is great !
0:00
" Felipe.... Fernando speaks faster than you..
Fernando speaks faster than you..."
Funny how getting a championship with Schumacher in the grid is more valuable but he hasn't managed to get one without Schumacher on the grid.
And what does that mean ?, then he went to teams that, like Mclaren, did not let him competitive in equality conditions or teams that did not have the second best car.
Obi .. very dumb comment from you.. you should stop watching F1 ..
McLaren desited to use Honda Engines again -_-
How many you win doesn't really relate to how you stand in the greatest of all time.
totally agree brother
"We managed to overtake him in the first Pit Stop" thats something to be proud of...
Salty
championchips xD
But looking back it was the secret use of mass dampers that gave the reno the edge. That and Michelin working one on one with reno on the ideal contact patch suspension project. Once the mass damper came to light everyone copied it then it was banned. And Reno no longer won Driver or Constructors titles anymore. Oh, lets not overlook the performance the Michelin tires that meet the max width rule when new but got much wider as they wore out. Remember that one Alonzo?
it was 2005, Massa has the Sauber uniform
And Raikkonen vs Alonso vs Schumi was also great. Most annoying was tho the McLada breaking down in half of the races those years :(
@themomentone That is not actually true - what many people see as corrections are actually just the steering wheel jumping around in their hands because of the worse suspension and no power steering.
Alonso is the best!
people keep on whining about how vettel's only winning because of the car.
alonso's championships with renault... renault power + mass dampers + launch control.
not to mention the mechanical failures that was plaguing schumi and kimi. their misfortunes likewise helped alonso a lot.
im pretty sure every driver isn't happy when their car is not up to speed. I am just curious, who do you consider a true champion in the current driver line up ?
Both eras have pros and contras.
Although these years there are more overtakes, pilots have to drive far below their own and their car's border and a second class driver can driver like a world champion. There are no spins, no accidents even neither if it's raining.
@RiskyPack For me the main driver who sticks out other than Schumi is Hakkinen, the driver Schumi also says he respected the most as a rival
Actually Fernando Alonso was become the "new Michael Schumacher"
Which ofc not happen
I was streemly lucky to win de last two champion chips
Alonso's daily diet: Chicken with champion chips.
The interviewer sounds like Peter Windsor, is it him?
It is.
And the Fia keeps helping RBR to win. (see safety cars waiting for Vettel to do first the pit stop).
Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Kubica = greatest F1 drivers alive!
Lol, kubica is shit, inconsistent and garbage in rain.
Lol this guy said Hamilton not Michael Schumacher and Senna
Who the fuck would've thought this would be his last championship!? Here I thought he'd probably break Cheatermacher's records 🤬🤔
its crazy cuz everyone knows with the tiniest change in fortunes and actions he could absolutely easily be a 5 time champion. so close yet so far.
You could even say it was Schumacher+Brawn/Newey :D
this changes nothing
go into a press conference, writing english on a computer is much easier than speak it fluently in real life.
You mean :
Mercedes vs Ferrari
Hakinen vs Schumi
Coulthard vs Barrichello
When Ralph drove in BMW Williams
But yeah, Old tracks, old rules. No KERS. The F1 was good, when skill did all the job, not these mechanics and electronics. The driver did all the job. We need back this kind of F1
Drs has made racing more fun, artificial but fun
Champion chips are what he has with his quick chickens.
that year was pretty straight forward between the Ferraris and the Renaults.Definitely the best 2 cars in that year.Formula One was brilliant in those days.Cars looks better and performs even better.
1:26- Ale-onso´s rice at that breadzilian Grand Prey was Fanta-stic, with a purrfect pet-stop strategy similar to the one they ate at the hamburger GP... But I doughnut know why is he so series here... Maybe is he released?...
the v12s an v10s sounded way much nicer. now the engine noise is just annoying. was music, became a noise. wouldn't have thought that i could be saying this of a v8, but in this case it's like that to me.
... Did I say that ??
It's me Mario
@dlaird8 Well put , he does get bad press. And compared to his colleagues he is a very fair driver and wont put do or die moves on you like some others.
I love DRS, it might be fake but its spiced things up!
championchips? WOOOT
He overtook Schumacher in the Chicken
@themomentone Alonso had an engine blow up in Italy actually so without that then he would have won anyway
@Senj1n You cannot deny Sebastien Vettel. He is stunningly talented.
Alonso says it: His titles have way more value than others as he won against Schumacher when MSC over the year also had an equal car(first half Renault better, second half Ferrari). Vettel is a sore loser...
1:24 champion chips
@francesthemutes He's only quick, he snaps as soon he has to fight for a position, now don't deny that, because he simply cannot race between other cars.
I love how you say that and if you driver would win again you will say that he is the greatest and the car did nothing.....People who are watching F1 are pure babies
that's what I said.
WHO IS BARRY
Wtf is felipes racing suit
