This was not a sponsored video. I originally received this pickups in exchange for a previously done demo, however, this video was done entirely of my own volition.
    Description from Seymour Duncan
    Summary
The same materials, construction and tone as our Danelectro replacement but modified as a standard-sized Strat pickup.
    Description
The Lipstick Tube for Strat uses the same materials and construction as our Danelectro replacement, but is modified to be a drop-in for any standard sized Strat slot. What you get is a unique combination of Strat bounciness and Dano crispness. The tone is sharp and jangly, and is great for all types of clean tone rhythm playing. Leads have a snarly breakup when overdriven, and are full of gritty brilliance. Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the Lipstick Tube uses an Alnico 6 bar magnet, and a classic looking Danelectro style Lipstick Tube cover that has been slightly reduced in size to fit a Strat slot. We have also modified the mounting bracket so that it mounts like any other Stratocaster pickup. Comes with 2-conductor shielded lead wire, and is vacuum wax potted for squeal free operation.
Additional gear featured I own through review deals limited to their individual reviews. No part of this video was sponsored and my choice to use the gear was entirely of my own volition.
Disclaimer: I do basic audio editing on my videos to account for the microphones, preamp and room. This editing, mostly light EQ and compression, is intended to give you the most accurate representation of how the featured gear actually sounds. NO editing is done to misrepresent how the featured gear sounds in any way.

In my humble opinion, I prefer the sound of these pickups to the usual Fender single-coil pickups. I LOVE the way these S.D.'s sound in the bridge position in comparison to Fender pickups!

I love how much you can hear the strings through these. That’s the magic of a super low-output pickup in the neck slot. The sound doesn’t just plow through everything else like a high-output humbucker.

From Leo: I have an original '56 Danelectro, and really enjoy the sounds, even if the neck feels like a discount house acoustic guitar. I assembled a partscaster with the three lipsticks and a great feeling neck. The modern lipsticks really do not sound exactly the same, but they do have enough lipstick flavor to make me happy. As Jack demonstrates, they do a great job on more than surf music.

The newer pups are made differently with bobbins and smaller magnets, probably for ease of manufacturing. I wound an original style one (bobbinless, larger magnet,) and I know of no other type of pickup that's more difficult to make and put into the tube assembly. I'm sure it's more easily done now that I know how, but getting there by experience alone took 10 to 25 attempts of winding one in the original style.

Hi Jack, The bridge middle is where I live on a strat (fender or G&L). Because of the light touch on the clean channel (chords) I couldn't tell if that Claptonesque "quack" sound was there. Would love to hear some blues on that toggle position on the clean channel. Thanks, for a great demo on a lovely guitar.

I was sort of hoping they wouldn't sound so close to what good strat single coils should sound like. Cool experiment, and I appreciate the work you put into this. Im curious if youd consider trying it again with Danelectro 59 Pickups? The Dano has a bit more grit, but the 59 also lives in a guitar with only two pickups, so maybe installing three of them would produce the same tonal clarity by virtual of the third magnetic field. Are the Seymor Duncans vastly different from Danelectro 59s? Dont feel like im pushing you to drop 50 hours into another video to find out, but id be curious what your thoughts are, Jack Fossett!

The only problem I have with these is that they are fairly inaccurate to Danelectro Lipstick pickups. The norm for Lipstick pickups is to use a sanded down alnico 6 magnet rather than an alnico 5. This makes up for the rather low winding as far as I’ve read.

      @Finniganmydog 4 роки тому

Andrew Walsh I finally had them installed - into my Ibanez Prestige Talman. Even at the “Moderate” 5.8k output they are the lowest volume puckups I have. Not a problem for me, I just crank the volume of my EQD Tone Job up. I got these to deliver crystal clear clean tones and they deliver. Very even string articulation - no compressor needed. Not as bright as I expected - I might try a 500k tone pot. All in all very happy with them - but they sound nothing like these Seymour Duncans, which still sounds somewhat like Strat puck ups to me (good ones).

Keith Clark so this guitar actually has a Tone Man Guitar blues style wiring harness in it with 250k Bourns pots and a PIO cap. I’m honestly not sure about the comparison as I haven’t played earlier pickups of this style. The only other lipstick set I’ve tried is GFS and original Danos. The Danos are nice, the GFS I thought we’re a little too dark and warm for what I want a lipstick pickup to sound like.

I literally had a guy ask me one time if I only played girl music 😆 I just told him plainly you don't know what your missing if you never played a set. At some point I wanna try these out of phase and have a switch to go back and fourth with cause I think with them out of phase you could definitely get that surfy quack.

This has become a hot topic clearly. The song differs from House in a number of significant ways beyond just "missing the F chord". For starters, its in a completely different time signature and tempo, giving it a different feeling. Beyond just missing the F, it doesn't follow the rest of the song beyond similarities in the beginning. The progression is shorter, and it doesn't resolve the same way as any of House's varying progressions which I do know by heart. Is it similar sounding? Yes, granted. The first three chords at the very beginning are the A minor, C and D major, and have a similar sweep. That being said, the walk up transition to these chords is also different. It differs more greatly than Vanilla Ice differs from Queen. Although I do have to thank you, you're the first person to ever compare me to Vanilla Ice in any sense, which I will be forever grateful for.
Regarding the copyright - were I actually to play House of the Rising Sun, not only would a short piece of a famous progression in a guitar gear demo reasonably fall under Fair Use (as opposed to a full dedicated cover song), but House is also a public domain song with limited parts of it owned. If Mr. Eric Burden does have any issues he'd like to address, first of all please let him know I'm a fan and greatly respect him as an artist, and secondly, I'd be happy to discuss it with him or someone in his camp.
