If you want to know more about the mindset of a slayer id highly recommend reading the gotrek and felix novels, it really goes deep into what makes a slayer. There is one chapter in which they encounter a band of dwarves that have been taken as slaves by the dark elves. Gotrek insults them for allowing themselves to be taken alive by the enemy rather than die fighting back! Later on, these dwarves come to the dues aid, having shaven their heads and picked up whatever they found to find as weapons and all taken the slayers oath. I think the idea is to find an *honourable* matchup for your death, so newly-minted Slayers go after minor monsters rather than looking for creatures they flat-out KNOW will curbstomp them without even thinking about it. Or it could just be that Dwarfs are incapable of fighting to lose. o _o
The Slayer Oath is really nuanced in the most bleak way though because they're supposed to die in battle but they're also forbidden from committing suicide. They can't just throw themselves in knowing 100% it's unwinnable and will have them killed because it'll be questioned after their death. They at least need to go into something where they know they can kill lots or leave a nasty mark to show that they tried their best and went down fighting etc.
