- You might not be familiar with SsangYong brand, but SsangYong is a Korean Car Manufacture that specializes in making SUVs and pickup Trucks. And SsangYong just introduced all the SUV called Ssangyong Torres. It shares its platform with SsangYong Korando and it is designed to compete against rivals such as Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento. But dimensions wise it is closer to Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. Now, let’s go out and drive SsangYong Torres and see if you like it.

Best looking Ssangyong I have seen for years! At first I thought it was a Mitsubishi Outlander. Shame on it having such a small engine. It should have a 2ltr option.
I'm in love with the design! So sharp and boxy amd quite different from Hyundai's offerings. The headlights look fantastic too

Great review Charlie! Nice mention of Australia in your video. I think if SsangYong continue to develop their off road vehicles, they will continue to do well in Australia. Supply seems to be the issue with them making even more sales.
I like this design language of sang yong. The shapes used for the head lights are unique in a nice way. Tail light feels out of place being that low.

I love the design! It's like a futuristic Jeep, but is safer much more reliable.
We've had ssanyong vehicle in Nigeria. Though we are yet to get the latest versions. Great car. Think will do well in our market. Nice review.
SsangYong has been selling TORRES more than 75,000 vehicles so far within 3 months from July to September in domestic market. In upcoming November, TORRES 'll be launched at Chille. Wow. That's amazing.
Ssanyong is/was famous in the UK I see fair few of them on the roads especially the Korando and the pickup

Daewoo doesn't exist in cars at all anymore. GM bought them after the IMF crisis, and stopped using the Daewoo badge in 2011, though GM still manufactures cars in former Daewoo plants. Samsung cars were only ever rebadged Renaults, and the former Renault-Samsung Motors became Renault Korea Motors earlier this year. This is why I really hope SsangYong does better: otherwise, it'll really just be Hyundai/Kia from Korea. They should come to the U.S.; we buy every SUV we can!

Yeah hell nah... that's an imitation Jeep not Grand Cherokee maybe old Liberty or Compass... but it might have better reliability that Stalantas Group. Well see 👀

In the 70-80s, when SsangYong had no technology to made car by themself, they brought a model of Jeep and built a car.
And in the '90s, they were finally able to make their own SUV cars called Korando. But SsangYong car heritage was from Jeep's for long time. So they made a Korando with a similar shape (grill and body shape).
So Ssangyong claims that it is not a copy because the design has been around for a long time.

It's amazing how Ssangyong can come up with something like this, the exterior, interior, the detail and finish in their current financial state - along with all the facelifts across the rest of the range they deserve a lot of credit for not dropping the fundamentals that ensure a sustainable business. That has to have given investors a lot of confidence that there is growth opportunity.
Mahindra invested a lot along with its partners TechMahindra, Pininfarina etc.. Also helped devloped new gen powertrains & drivetrains. Sad that things didn't worked out.

My dad in the Dominican Republic has bought three different SsangYong Rextons since 2003! Great brand, good quality, awesome vehicles, although if something breaks or you have a small crash in it, parts will be really hard to find anywhere in the world.
Throw this in the oversaturated mid-size SUV segment and you have a winner.
Not because is modern and well appointed inside but because offers real offroad capability which none of the competition seem to offer.
Will take this instead of Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Renault Koleos, Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008, Citroen C5 Aircross, Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, BMW X3, Audi Q5, Skoda Kodiaq, Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Volvo XC60 etc. etc.
Even though it designed wise is a mix of many it still works for me. I hope that Ssangyong become another strong automotive brand from Korea. I hope they update they're lined up and availability for us in the EU and US.!

Don't care about ev cars still lousy range and charging a hassle !!! Plus cost of ev are high. Plus utilities rates are ridiculously high. But nice to see another company putting out new stuff. Like the look but still would go with my tucson !!!

I don't care, if there are any similarites with other models. I like it a lot. I want something unique and I wish Ssangyong all the best to be successful. I'm looking forward to the electric version.
That storage box outside is actually not that bad. It would be an even better access to the first aid kit, safety vest and warning triangle. It's good they didn't made a side fixed trunk lid and with the EV version the gear shifting issue won't be one ;-)

Ssangyong better remodels the design of the Rexton same as this Torres for 2023-24 it will be the killer of the defender. This Torres design is a really great but small engine and short
I'm from Germany and I love the torres. Also the rexton. In any reviews from Germany, UK or Australia I only hear positive feedback. Therefore it's sad that Ssangyong was in financial problems.
It seems that now Ssangyong starts to build pretty nice cars. In the past the design and quality was more controversial.
As I heard the orders and preorders for the torres in Korea are already higher than anual orders for all the other models worldwide. :) Looking forward to the more success with the brand.
Sang Yong should rebranding their image. It's time they change the logo like Kia did.

the design is super and in the outside box I put in the first-aid kit because to come more fast on it in a emergency case. But still miss the reall replacmnet of the Kyron

I am Canadian. I had never heard of Ssangyong until now.
This looks fantastic, hopefully KG brings it to Australia and puts some better engine options on the table.
I drove it yesterday. Hood is huge so there are many blind point. Also it doesn't has 360 surround system. And 20 inch wheels too much for this car. Because suspension quality not good enough. If choose 18 inch handling unlike 20 inch. Also i heard some trim sounds.
You can control many things by small screen but it is quite bad even i was cursing near dealer😬 i decided to buy it before drive but i was city drive in busan korea, it was terrible feeling in traffic jam. Also i had been watching (8-9km/l) on screen 🤦🏻 i was so excited to drive and then make deal but suddenly it became disappointment. I used 2004 range rover which has huge and flat hood and old but i felt much better and comfortable when i drive.
It looks cool and old style but it's need some updates like screen,engine,suspension and gear box( aisin 6🤦🏻)
You are right, this car needs better drivetrain and much reasonable 18" wheels.

Nice SUV! Wish the U.S. got it. Hopefully they don’t get sued by Jeep for having a “ripoff” version of their signature grille. Jeep isn’t known for being very kind to competitors why try to copy their designs.

Nice review Charlie! I'm also pulling for Ssangyong to do well! But honestly, I don't know why anyone would buy this. It has inferior reliability, engines and transmissions compared to HMG products and it's not cheaper. I feel Ssangyong should focus more on the off roaders that made it famous, like the Rexton, Khan and old Korando. HMG doesn't make products like this and thus doesn't compete directly.
What reliability... Used both Korando and Rexton, never had any problems, did combined like 100k kilometers and never had any problem. Meanwhile Toyota needed to go to mechanic twice in same time, once for AC problems and once for some electrical problems... All cars around the same age. So it is just more about model of the car not manufacturer...
@@waki0069 I'm glad you personally had good experiences with your Ssangyong vehicles. However, they are well known for being far less reliable than their HMG counterparts. In fact, three of the top four rated companies for reliability this year were Kia, Hyundai and Genesis. My point about this vehicle is that it's just not as competitive as it needs to be. It seems quite nice. Just not at the price they charge here in Korea for it.

I like Ssangyong Korean cars. This new SUV will be the most successful model ever built by the SUV specialist.
Ssangyong sales are improving in Oz and the Musso, Korando and Rexton get good reviews.
My eye is on Musso for my outback travels.

The whacky design/styling vocabulary is at least consistent so it works on both the exterior and interior. The lockable C pillar exterior passenger-side lunchbox would be a good place for fix-a-flat equipment as it never fails that the rear cargo is laden with goods that all has to be removed to access it when needed.
we have a 2012 korando here in Croatia and we love it. Torres looks awesome but the engine is too weak and Idk why they didn't put the 2.2 diesel 200 hp engine in this one. Otherwise we might think about buying it

@@AsianPetrolhead I'm worried that the SsangYong name will continue to be a problem for the company internationally. Difficult to pronounce in the English language and fairly unpopular and unknown in many markets, I believe a name and logo change could really help them moving forward. @@aussieinkorea593 No its not a difficult name to pronounce Ssang Yong. They just got a bad reputation over here in Europe unfortunately for bad reliability but hopefully that will change.

Very nice car with very poor and outdated drivetrain with low fuel efficiency. This car needs new 2.0l turbo petrol engine and 8 gear A/T.

Ssangyong has always taken design from other manufacturers, they have never been original, their earlier mashups were hideous.
Im waiting 2024 for sonata hopefully its redesigned.
Front looks great, side looks terrible, interior looks cheap (the spinach-diarrhea colour is horrible) , rear looks meh.
the design is quite strange. Jeep in the front, ford explorer,/land rover in the back
9:25 on the real usability of the side box it would have to be remote controlled from the inside to open it allowing you to put peanuts in it to feed the monkeys at the African safari park so no need to roll down your window.
