    About me:
Hi, my name is Theo Mutesa. I was born in Rwanda, but like many Rwandans, my family fled the country in 1994 and we eventually ended up in the Netherlands. That is where I grew up and lived for the past 20 years until 2019. That’s when I moved back to my motherland to follow my dream of opening my own gym and help contribute to the development of Rwanda.
If you would like to support me and/or my business here in Kigali, please donate to my crowdfunding campaign.

You should make pop a chill pill shirts. That was cute and really got the point across. Some of those women were probably jealous. Your girlfriend was blessed with ALL the assets, front and back. Katty women of every race and culture will talk about her where ever she goes. A lot of women are always in competition mode mentally. The fact that she's also confident, blessed with a beautiful smile, has beautiful dark skin AND has her man by her side looking at her adoringly, really sends some people over the edge. Kids are just brats. They will hurt your feelings real quick. The only person worse than kids is your grandmother or great grandmother. No one will comment about your appearance with more savagery than grandma. She feels she has earned the right at her age.

I have been fat all my life but thankfully I developed thick skin coz our ppl oh my gawd. I was with my sister and dad in the village checking out a farm and I was wearing a skinny Jean's, I am way bigger than your girlfriend. In front of my dad these 2 ladies started speaking out loud " Mana, Mana Mana weee, mbega ikibuno weeeee" translation (OMG look at that butt) I was like WTF😮😮😮 the way I walked passed then really shaking my butt on purpose🙄🙄🙄 . And then there was the constant comment to loose weight and the thing is I did not mind my weight at that time and kept telling them I feels comfy the way I am and they were all skinny trying to loose weight. This time I am going back, I will use the F word on them. How do you say F**k you b**c in Kinyarwanda? I'm gonna need that.

I love your videos. Maybe go into business selling chill pills? Or is that just repackaged Valium? My friend was recently upset, she's lived here for years and said 'I should be over it by now,' but she was walking around Kigali Heights and everyone was commenting about her appearance. She speaks fluent Kinyarwanda, and can understand everything people say. She thought it was because she was white that people assumed she didn't understand, so felt free to say those things in front of her. It's really interesting (and comforting) to know that people do that whatever your skin colour and whether they assume you can understand or not. I'm fine as my Kinyarwanda never got further than ordering food, beer and a moto home. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. And I do agree, I think women judging women is far more common than people commenting on how men look, which is really sad.

Well your girlfriend is absolutely gorgeous and her body is perfect ! I think there’s a cultural shock as Flemish and Dutch people are quite reserved it’s hard to navigate even as Rwandans. I grew up in the french speaking part of Belgium and lives in France now and it’s very different how they judge apparence, we just don’t care in Belgium. On the contrary I’m very very skinny and have a lot of those comments but also heard the best funny roasts of my life. In Rwanda, it’s all about pride, walk with your neck pulled up and put on sunglasses and they would probably think you’re a star 😂✌🏾

What I learned for all these years in Rwanda there's no Rush in anything so patience is Highly needed too much pride in people even when dating a woman you'll get the contact but communication will be a big issue, people are very sensitive n like play innocent when tell like it is n give the lamest excuses ever, but people are very helpful with directions n understanding n there's so much good thing to learn n positive side is second to none.

I never allowed myself to be picked on by a mean girl in school and wouldn't definitely allow them to be mean towards me for no reason, sorry to say this but no matter how you look at it, it's not okay for them to be openly mean to people just because they felt like it! they wouldn't like it either if I turned around and be mean to them, I loved hearing you and your girlfriends speaking dutch, het was geweldig!

Shalom brother. My husband and I are wanting to move to the continent. Initially Rwanda and Tanzania were at the top of our list. TZ won't let us own land and Rwanda has the clean up law which is on our sabbath. Heartbreaking! We love the idea but cannot go against our faith. We are now hearing that the country will allow you to choose a different day! Hoorayyyy! (hoping it's true). Anyway we are looking into buying land to build a home on in Rwanda again. Wondering if you could recommend cities less expensive than Kigali? Someplace for us to homestead, i.e. grow food have livestock for personal use. Thank you for your time and attention.

Hello, Theo. Thank you so much for your informative videos and this one in particular. I would like to mention a couple things: The impression I am getting from what you say about Rwandan’s staring and making remarks about people’s bodies or dress style, is that Rwandan’s are rude. I do not want to believe that, as I have heard that Rwandans are a friendly and humble people. I wondered if the off-putting comments are reserved for certain individuals. I understand the staring, especially when done to people they believe are not Rwandan or dress differently than they. But it makes me wonder and ask: do they behave the same way towards and in the presence of Mzungus/whites?
I am planning to visit with the ultimate goal of committing myself and making Rwanda my second home. I have heard wonderful things about Rwanda and sense a “call” there and I am preparing for a difference in cultures and potential culture shock. But, I would be heartbroken if a people who look like me would treat me disrespectfully and rude. Because I cannot believe that that is part of Rwandan “culture”. To me, that is just plain RUDENESS, “thick skin” or not. 😔
I wish your girlfriend the best and that her very own people will begin to treat her more kindly and respectfully. 🙏🏽♥️

It is more made by ignorance than by dirsrespect. Like rwandan culture is conservative like in most african countries, people stare and judge because your apparence/energy/behaviour, the way you move is different and unknown to them.

Everything Theo's girlfriend said is absolutely correct. Some people get used to the staring but that's not me. I was 120lbs when I was there the last time, so people weren't staring at me because I was "fat" but because I also wore my hair very short (like Theo's girlfriend). My queer friends get stared at, my elderly mom gets stared at. If you're not from Rwanda (even if you're "Rwandan" like us), they'll find a reason to stare at you and say rude things straight to your face. Like Theo said, if that's the place you want to live, you can do it if you develop thick skin. I don't think it's the case eeverywhere in Africa. I think it's because it's a) a small country, b) a VERY conservative country, c) a VERY VERY conservative country, d) it's only been open to the world for 20-25 years, so my guess that in another 15-20 years, we'll see changes in how the local population relates to people who look different than what they're traditionnally used to.

You forgot, actually being thick is better than being thin, when you're thin they say you're poor, you're hungry.... but when you're thick they think you're rich, you eat well(fast food).
But all in all, it always comes back to you, however your body maybe, just make peace with it and be proud, once you achieve that, no comment will affect you.
There're always people trying to eat so much to gain weight and there're others trying to not eat to loose weight.

Travel and communication is an important part. If you ask a question or ask for help, directions etc., they are more than helpful.

Now that I live in Rwanda I am experiencing some of the things you mentioned in the video. The staring is constant and intense. Sometimes I ignore it and other times I stare back at them and even look at them up and down. Sometimes they look away and other times they just keep staring. And yes even in my own home. When I was sitting on my bedroom balcony, it faces the street where people, motos, and cars pass. They just stare at me and I'm thinking I'm supposed to be looking at you not the other way around. Don't get me started about the waiting. From getting internet installed to dealing with the bank or MTN services, I am having to practice extreme patience. I have been irritated and let them know on some occasions because I cannot accept unprofessionalism or trying to cheat someone. When you come from the West, a lot of people just see dollar signs and will lie about prices to get more from you. There is a lot to get used to here and I realize adjusting takes time. Maybe some of the things that upset me or that I get irritated by will be more normal in the future. We shall see. I really need that chill pill LOL

I wonder what the usual commoners would think about/perceive (white skin people/Arabs/Egyptians), especially with the motion of water regional wars which is about to errupt. what is the common mentality of Rwandans. we are aware of South africa - Zimbabwe - Angola & others each have a different set of understandings towards foreigners. even in Egypt we have some closed society mentality in some degree but still interacting & welcoming ..

    Hi Theo,
I am Nigerian. I live in Ireland but my family stays in Nigeria. There is silent genocide going on against the Southeasterners (the Igbos) in Nigeria and my family is not safe.
I am considering moving them to Kigali to stay temporarily until my application for family reunification is granted and they are able to join me.
I am looking at July/August to move them. From videos I've watched, accommodation costs is on the high side and scary compared to Nigeria.
How you can assist to make the movement less stressful. Thanks

The body shaming part though is a turn off. Weak people are people who only focus on other people weaknesses. I think they need to have a broader view of humanity. See the diversity of God in creating different bodys. They should also try and see some good in everyone. They should get busy in minding there own bussiness, they are too available for small talks. They need to be cultured!
