    Omgah! So glad I found you. I am a newbie and I was a scaredy cat BUT Not anymore. Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial. You are an excellent and thorough instructor, straight to the point, you cover everything about the unit and safety as well. Nothing boring here! I have grown beautiful vegetables over the years and I freeze everything or water bath. Someone gave me the Presto and it has been so long ago I cant remember who gifted it to me. I almost purchased the electric digital design pressure canner but I decided to search a few tutorials on this canner and because of your knowledge I’m going all the way now! Yay me! Seriously, thanks a bushel and a peck :) I am subscribed for ever.

    I watched a review recently of a start up for a pressure canned without a dial gauge, and even tho I haven’t done canning myself, I’m bingeing on info, getting ready for canning. There were so many no-no’s in what she said. You and a couple others are the ones I “pay attention” to and take my guidance from.

      When you first buy your canner take it to the county extension office then every year before you start canning. A dial can be off by as many as three pounds to much or to little. I only use the weighted gauge because it’s always correct.

    I got a presto pressure canner last year I did one batch of chicken. I live in Northeast Ohio and it says that I should pressure cook with 11 pounds. I want to buy one of those rocker gadgets but they only go 5 pounds 10 pounds and 15 pounds. Does that mean I am not able to use it? When I was canning my check in the pressure dropped down to 10 pounds a couple of times for a minute it was so hard to keep turning the burner to keep it exactly at 11 pounds. Is my chicken still good to eat? I’ve been afraid to eat it because it went below what they shed it should stay at. Someone please please help me with this. I would love to keep pressure canning but I cannot stand have to watch that dial it is terrible.

    Hi, I have a frustrating Q, lol.
    Is the air vent/cover lock supposed to spew out steam after its already popped up and the weight has been added to the vent pipe?
    I waited for the air vent/cover lock to pop up before I placed the weight on the main air vent but now, my pressure guage won't rise a bit and the cover lock is spewing out steam. Is this normal? Thanks in advance!! ❤

Mine doesn’t dance until 17 Lbs, which I thought was just off a couple pounds. Just wanted to chime in and tell you that your beans are fine. As long as the pressure never dropped BELOW the required pressure based on your altitude.
      Ideally you want it to be the same the whole time but it will not harm your food in any way. Again, it must stay at or above the required pressure

    If you have time, I'd like to learn about canning veggies in 1/2 pint jars -- haven't found info on how it differs from using the full pints. Small household and pints would be too much for us.

      @future.homesteader 3 роки тому +1

      If you're canning in a size that's smaller than what sizes are listed you use the same headspace & the process time listed for the next larger jar. So use time for pints if half pint / one cup time isn't listed.

    I used my Presto 23 qt for the first time a few days ago. I never saw a steady stream of steam. It "hissed" steadily, but I never SAW steam. I don't know if the steam was just so fine, I couldn't see it, or if something was wrong, but I literally waited 45 minutes. It would occasionally spit water, so I finally put my jiggle weight on and it did come up to pressure. Was something wrong, or was the steam just too fine to see?

    My presto canner is from 1991. It hasn't been used much though. The "airlock/cover vent mechanism is in the handle on mine. It took 5 hours for it to let me open the lid yesterday(and I'm in freezing cold Alberta...cold snap right now) so my kitchen isn't hot. I'm wondering about maintenance as there is a black rubber around it(the doo dad you showed is open to the inside in mine, not the outside). any suggestions of where I can get info on that age of presto canner? I've searched the internet and can't find anything.

    • @longarmsupplies
      @longarmsupplies 2 роки тому

      To clarify, the canner was completely depressurized for 3 hours, jiggler was off that long, before the airlock would open. I had tried to wiggle the lid and it finally dropped 15 minutes after that

       @Suttons Daze LOL, I gave up and called Presto. She was lovely. In under a minute, she figured out the store chain that brought it in took a Mirro Canner, rebranded the box and sold it silly people like me that thought they were purchasing a Presto canner. New seal for the Mirro is $60...and she said the Mirro company is disappearing, so I ordered myself and shiny new All American Canner. I'd been searching for two years for a second hand one and couldn't find any so I I gave up and bought one. Their tattler lids wer on sale so bought a set of those too. I'm ready for the rush next year!

When I got done I was not quite sure what to do with it as far as recipes . I did think of 2 but no more, was wandering if you could please give me ideas or shoot me in a direction to find out .Thanks Keep up the fantastic job. Greatly Appreciated.

    Thanks for the info. I have the 23 quart Presto. It is good to know how it all works and reassuring to know I am doing things correctly. If the vent hasn’t vented 10 minutes and that thing has popped up, can I put the regulator on as soon as it pops up? Does it mean I had my stove temp up too high?
