Snyder like you said does moments. He generally doesnt do stories. Snyder fans will post a cool compositional frame by the man and go "peak cinema" when the various other bits of filmmaking are overlooked. Set up/pay off, theme, nuance. Snyder can craft a movie poster but hes a thoughtless storyteller.
He is a good director but not a good writer and that was the problem, he wanted to be involved in everything instead of focusing only in directing... 🤷
The big differences between James Gunn and Zack Snyder is Gunn is a storyteller, and Snyder isn't. James Gunn is a screenwriter, Snyder isn't. James Gunn is a director, Zack Snyder is more of a good cinematographer.
He isn't even the cinematographer of his DC films, it's Larry Fong. That's why Rebel Moon is so lackluster in cinematogrpahy too, Fong did not work on it. Rebel Moon, the films also ignored by Snyder fans, I wonder why.
Actually disappointed by that. Like I get wanting to create your own thing but the Williams theme is Superman. I certainly am fine with taking it for a spin. No reason to just blare out something from the ‘70’s without update but that’s the theme. Like I would find it bizarre to do a Star Wars film without the Force theme or the main theme squirreled away somewhere in the score.
I've heard arguments arguing that reusing the score even if its just a homage is still stupid and they shouldn't try and nostalgia bait the audience and make something new but we've only seen a complete homage to the donner films and a complete 180 on the traditional and original iteration of superman with Man of steel's dark and different take, so if Gunn can mold it together, with the grounded tone and modern action sequences with the classic and hopefulness of the donner films, with comic nods and ideas, we are gold
James Gunn's new little policy, revolving around movies not being put into production until he's given a completed script, is what inspires incredible hope for this new DCU, I also thoroughly enjoy, the introduction to this new universe Creature Commandos, and while according to James Gunn, nothing is canon until its mentioned in the new DCU, I am excited to see how this is conveyed through the new movies and show, to continue continuity errors, with this sort of soft reboot.
a finished script doesn't mean a film will be good. The first Avengers wasn't a finished script and countless MCU films. David Ayer's Suicide Squad had a finish script and it sucked.

Script was completed and the edit was a minor issue, the script was terrible. "What are we, some type of Suicide Squad?" Ayer wrote that, not the edit team.
The difference is Bay is fully aware of how stupid his movies can be and doesn't pretend they're deeper than what they actually are. Zack thinks he's the second coming of cinema itself and would look you dead in the eye and tell you only a small minority of people hate his movies.

I forgot to add that the explanation for the Peacemaker characters meeting the old justice league is likely going to be in Creature Commandos. Even though it's an animated series, Viola Davis is voice acting Amanada Waller and there are some plot points that might take care of the old justice league cross over.

About reusing the John Williams Superman Theme...Why does Superman need a new theme? Do people complain about the Bond theme being reused from each Bond film?(I'm sure the answer is yes but they are in the minority) The theme is iconic and using that as a recurring theme that persists beyond the current iteration of a character...is good branding(I hate myself for saying that but its true)

Why are they using the John Williams Superman theme? For the same reason Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and 007 still use tgeir respective themes. It is synonymous with their respective characters. Superman is incomplete without that theme music.

I think you nailed it. Gunn understands the basic necessities of storytelling (ie setup & payoff, character arcs, motivations, etc) in a way that Snyder doesn’t seem to have locked down (yet?). Snyder clearly has mastery of visual artistry, but it seems more about being cool or epic than actually being a part of telling the story. A part of what made the MCU successful for as long as it was is that the essentials of storytelling were usually present in even their worst movies while the DCEU had studio execs interfering with nearly every project and even going so far as to recut films to oblivion. The MCU has suffered from a lot of different aspects over the past few years in particular with a sense of monotony and an implacable release schedule that overworked SFX and rushed scripts and rewrites; I’m very interested in the mission statement that Gunn expressed that the new DCU will be a mix of tones and that having a good *completed* script is the key to any project moving forward
Sounds fair. But honestly, for me, Zack's Man of Steel was an amazing movie , i loved it (Even if Rebel Moon was horribly bad). And Henry Cavill was for me perfect Superman. So im a bit sad about the end of it and the change. From the trailer Guns Superman seems abit more fantasy/fairy Tale then the realistic dark tone of Zacks, which might not be a bad thing, but it seems it will be different for sure. We shall see, i do hope its good.

James Gunn just makes better films, period. I think his real strength is how much he gets you to care about the characters. I actually think it's kind of an academic point whether Snyder's DCEU films are considered failures or not. Whatever anyone, including the studio itself, thinks of them, no one is taking them away from the people that enjoyed them. I like pineapple on pizza, and it doesn't change my enjoyment at all to hear people complain about it, or even tell me I shouldn't like it. I get to like what I like, and people can mind their own business. In other news, I loved The Last Jedi. I'd be delighted to see more Rian Johnson Star Wars, but I'm not angry at the world for depriving me of that. Life goes on, ya know? Yes, we're not gonna get any more Zack Snyder DCEU films, but we're also never going to get another Chris Nolan Batman, or another Russo Brothers Captain America, or another Joss Whedon Avengers. So what? We should appreciate movies for themselves, not only as a set-up for some as-yet unmade film that supposedly would bring everything together and blow our minds. I was disappointed by The Dark Knight Rises, as were many, but it only made me appreciate the achievement of The Dark Knight all the more. I certainly don't feel upset that we never got more movies in the Nolan-verse. It was good while it lasted, and then it was over, and I was ready for the next thing. If people felt the Snyder-Verse is incomplete after three films and several spin-offs, maybe those films weren't as satisfying as they could have been. Or maybe their fans should just love them for what they are, three whole movies that, apparently, did those characters exactly the way their fans wanted. What's the problem?

Thank you for acknowledging that MoS, BvS and ZSJL are absolutely a trilogy. BvS is as sequel to MoS in every possible way and JL is a sequel to BvS in every possible way. The only thing that would hold them back from being a trilogy is the clear desire to set up yet another film or several. (I'm not a fan of these films but every time someone says they want a sequel to MoS I'm just like what the hell do you think BvS is?)
What's frustrating about Zack is, he doesn't use what's already there, like the whole floating dust payoff, you have the codex for that and he could build on that for actually interesting plot beats It's a bunch of okay ideas but the pivot and execution is so poorly done, that it makes it look like terrible ideas in retrospect I agree with your point about it being "inverted The Boys", this new superman logo is basically a nice version of the Kingdom Come logo, which is where I think he's going with this, "a Hope Punk Kingdom Come" with the MCU as the stand-in metaphor, kinda like what we got with Orgocorp in GOTG 3 Gunn does good deconstruction- Valid and meaningful breakdown and replaces with something better Snyder does bad deconstruction- Vacuous and facile breakdown with empty or weaker replacement.
Alan Moore and Garth Ennis actually wrote well written poignant Superman stories despite being known for deconstructing superheroes. Even they have respect for Superman and who he is.
I dont really care for superhero movies in general, but I'd honestly listen to you talk about paint drying if it were something you were passionate about bc you have this way of getting people emotionally invested in whatever topic is at hand, because you seem to always be writing about things you have a ton of knowledge on and are intensely fascinated by. That shit is contagious, man. Keep talking about the things you like, the things you hate, whatever it is that makes you feel something strong, that makes life feel more real for you. At some point, DC has to take a chance and do something out of the box. You have fan favorites like Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Teen Titans, and probably one of the best comic stories ever in Brightest Day and Blackest Night, but they won't try something different. MCU gave us their verson of Civil War, House of M, Demon in a bottle. But DC just wont give us the The fan favorite stories. The thing about art is that there are no "objectively better", it's all about harmony. There are no 'bad colors' in painting, but there are palletes that don't match. There are no 'bad notes' in music, but there are chords that feel weird. Zack Snyder is not an objectively bad hero movie director, his approach just don't fit Superman's message.

Frankly I don't know what trailer many people are watching, the first thing seen in Gunn's trailer is a Superman falling defeated, in a Yamcha-style pose (even Crunchyroll made fun of that), panting and bleeding (what kind of "symbol of hope"? ” is that one? And they were complaining about Snyder), and then he calls his “cute” little dog Krypto to save him and take him home (that is, Superman is apparently useless in his first film), then being attacked and belittled by people so he looks “annoyed and dejected”… just like Cavill’s Superman in Batman v Superman (only here it is in his first movie), then the CW show-type cheap suits and cuts of the Justice League (or is it the Society?), an overabundance of secondary characters (and they complained about Batman v Superman, only here it is not in the second but in the first film), Clark's Bad Bunny hairstyle, the Snyder-type slow motion shots (which they criticized him a lot for but Gunn is applauded?), etc. The only thing more or less salvageable is Luthor and Lois Lane (but the latter is worrying due to the statements of one of those who originally auditioned for the role when she said that “she is the heroine of the film and she is the one who saves Superman”… So Superman is going to be an extra in his own movie apparently). “This is Superman”… the problem with that is that there was already a Superman that was a carbon copy of Cristopher Reeve… Superman Returns with Brandon Ruth and also the Cavill of the Josstice League and both were a failure, that's why Nolan and Snyder made a more “realistic” version with Man of Steel in response because they realized that the “happy and funny” version was no longer as attractive, but well, there are many people with their altered perception of reality. Has James Gunn never failed? Apart from the Guardians trilogy, everything he has done is rubbish and failures (TSS Squad, Peacemaker and creature commandos are failures at the box office and ratings, apart from the fact that Gunn puts his member jokes and unhealthy tastes in young people in abundance in those productions. )
James gunn is also doing creature commandos which has been great so far, I recommend. We see clay face a lot in Harley Quinn and even in the lastest episode of CC, I think he's probably just a hard concept to get right with cgi for the big screen

I have this weird accuracy uncanny valley thing where if something is close but slightly off it’s even worse than being purposefully different. I had the same issue with Wolverine not wearing shoulder pads in Deadpool.
The only reason you need to give is that Gunn is a competent storyteller with an understanding and respect for these characters while Snyder is none of those things.
honestly what i'd love to see the most from dc studios right now, and i think james gunn could do it right, is _batman beyond_ not necessarily live action, in fact i think batman beyond would benefit a lot from a kind of spider-verse trilogy aesthetic approach to animation
Snyder isn't a good director. He is GREAT at cinematography though. I think he's been destined to do a punisher or max Payne movie but after army of the dead, I gave up on him.
Small aclaration. No matter what DC has said later. Superman did die against Doomsday. A guy called Dr. Occult says it to him. If it wasn't that both Jonathan convinced his soul of coming back and The Eradicator took his body to the Fortress of Solitude, he would never returned to life and it wouldn't happen again. Except for the time the whole Justice League was killed in the past and spend 3 thousand years as ghost in a cave untill they were resurrected but that was another story.
That's also why Rebel Moon was so criticized, they set up so many things and the payoff is non-existent or contrary to the setup, and he's been doing that since MoS.
For me its the opposite. Zack snyder for me is someone whose soured over time. My fav films of his are DotD, Watchmen and 300. There's just a point were you find that Snyder does good scenes but good scenes doesnt make good movie. Most of his "good" movies are just adaptations of other peoples works

Windows are still reflective, especially at night, when this scene takes place. We see Ratcatcher’s reflection turn into her father, pretty direct symbolism there.
I thought about that giant saw for weeks after I watched Army of the Dead. If I remember correctly Bautista uses it to open a hatch and thats it. Wild, was so ready for some insane saw zombie shenanigans.
Gunn takes specific themes he wants a story to focus on and then creates that entire series around it. Guardians of the Galaxy from start to finish was about family. It never once tries to subvert that. Snyder has on record said he hated traditional heroes, it's why he liked Watchmen.

He has outright said "I had a buddy who tried getting me into 'normal' comic books, but I was all like 'Nobody is having s*x or killing each other. This isn't really doing it for me.' He also has another interview where he talks about how when he was offered a chance to direct a Superman movie, he jumped on it because he likes to "deconstruct." He said he was going to "tear down Superman," that Superman was "the enemy." It is an objective fact that Snyder prefers dark, edgier stories. Good for Batman - awful for Superman. That's not what Superman is about. Superman is a resilient symbol of hope in the face of adversity. Batman is the one meant to reflect the darker, grittier aspect of the world. You even see that with the way Metropolis is bright and vibrant while Gotham is grungy.
@ i have read all his watchmen interviews and he never said Next how did MoS or BvS or JL deconstruct Superman? How did it tear down Superman or make him an enemy? In MoS he is constantly told about his destiny to be a hero. In BvS people look at him like a god and he sacrificed himself. In JL he literally listens to his fathers speak to him as he gets his new suit and takes up doing the Christ pose in the son and kills Stepphenwolf. How is any of that not hopeful?
@night6724 Because Superman is not *supposed* to be a godlike figure. He may have incredible powers, but he is still the same Clark Kent raised by Jon and Martha in his little town of Smallville. Snyder makes him out to be judge, jury and executioner. He isn't relatable at all, he's a deity figure in the DCEU when that isn't the essence of Superman. Superman's appeal is that he is just a good person trying to do right in the world. The "Christ pose" is exactly the problem. He's not a god.

There is literally a guy in the film who says something like “Maybe Superman isn’t a god and he is just a guy trying to do the right thing” and his whole point was most people in the world believe in some God and they project that onto Superman Like Superman himself never basks in the glory or embraces being a god like figures. That’s how people view him which is a bit ironic since he went from an outcast nobody to being seen as the second coming of Jesus. But again other Superman writers have gone in that direction.

James Gunn has a much more diverse skill set than Zack. Zack Mastered action and visual design, but that's it. Everything solo film he did was ahhs. Dawn of the dead was a collaboration project of Zack and James Gunn. Watchmen screen play and story was written by David Hayter & Alex Tse, Directed by Zack. Zack can make good movies, as long as he doesn't write them 😁

Actually disappointed by that. Like I get wanting to create your own thing but the Williams theme is Superman. I certainly am fine with taking it for a spin. No reason to just blare out something from the ‘70’s without update but that’s the theme. Like I would find it bizarre to do a Star Wars film without the Force theme or the main theme squirreled away somewhere in the score.

I've heard arguments arguing that reusing the score even if its just a homage is still stupid and they shouldn't try and nostalgia bait the audience and make something new but we've only seen a complete homage to the donner films and a complete 180 on the traditional and original iteration of superman with Man of steel's dark and different take, so if Gunn can mold it together, with the grounded tone and modern action sequences with the classic and hopefulness of the donner films, with comic nods and ideas, we are gold

a finished script doesn't mean a film will be good. The first Avengers wasn't a finished script and countless MCU films. David Ayer's Suicide Squad had a finish script and it sucked.

Script was completed and the edit was a minor issue, the script was terrible. "What are we, some type of Suicide Squad?" Ayer wrote that, not the edit team.
Synder is like Michael Bay. He doesn't care about story telling. He just wants to make scenes look really cool with slow motion and shaky cams.
The difference is Bay is fully aware of how stupid his movies can be and doesn't pretend they're deeper than what they actually are.

About reusing the John Williams Superman Theme...Why does Superman need a new theme? Do people complain about the Bond theme being reused from each Bond film?(I'm sure the answer is yes but they are in the minority) The theme is iconic and using that as a recurring theme that persists beyond the current iteration of a character...is good branding(I hate myself for saying that but its true)

I think you nailed it. Gunn understands the basic necessities of storytelling (ie setup & payoff, character arcs, motivations, etc) in a way that Snyder doesn’t seem to have locked down (yet?). Snyder clearly has mastery of visual artistry, but it seems more about being cool or epic than actually being a part of telling the story. A part of what made the MCU successful for as long as it was is that the essentials of storytelling were usually present in even their worst movies while the DCEU had studio execs interfering with nearly every project and even going so far as to recut films to oblivion. The MCU has suffered from a lot of different aspects over the past few years in particular with a sense of monotony and an implacable release schedule that overworked SFX and rushed scripts and rewrites; I’m very interested in the mission statement that Gunn expressed that the new DCU will be a mix of tones and that having a good *completed* script is the key to any project moving forward
Sounds fair. But honestly, for me, Zack's Man of Steel was an amazing movie , i loved it (Even if Rebel Moon was horribly bad). And Henry Cavill was for me perfect Superman. So im a bit sad about the end of it and the change. From the trailer Guns Superman seems abit more fantasy/fairy Tale then the realistic dark tone of Zacks, which might not be a bad thing, but it seems it will be different for sure. Yes, we're not gonna get any more Zack Snyder DCEU films, but we're also never going to get another Chris Nolan Batman, or another Russo Brothers Captain America, or another Joss Whedon Avengers. I was disappointed by The Dark Knight Rises, as were many, but it only made me appreciate the achievement of The Dark Knight all the more. Thank you for acknowledging that MoS, BvS and ZSJL are absolutely a trilogy. BvS is as sequel to MoS in every possible way and JL is a sequel to BvS in every possible way. The only thing that would hold them back from being a trilogy is the clear desire to set up yet another film or several.
(I'm not a fan of these films but every time someone says they want a sequel to MoS I'm just like what the hell do you think BvS is?)

At some point, DC has to take a chance and do something out of the box. You have fan favorites like Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Teen Titans, and probably one of the best comic stories ever in Brightest Day and Blackest Night, but they won't try something different. MCU gave us their verson of Civil War, House of M, Demon in a bottle. But DC just wont give us the The fan favorite stories. I lost all faith in DC when they didnt even Give us Fist Flight and messed up the green lantern movie

@JamesHowlett-qy3yq i don't see it that way. everything has been so vanilla. that it's not that entertaining. It's kind of like the original X men movies. They made all the characters so boring, that it wasn't enjoyable to watch.

Cant have cynicism without sincerity. Zack snyder is someone who hates superheroes. Putting someone like him in charge of Superman and Batman was a mistake. We dont need DC movies were Robin is dead and Jimmy Olsen gets shot in the face just to show how "hard" they're trying to be.

You are supposed to hate Guy Gardner, He has the most punch-able face in all the lantern corp.
James Gunn always wants crude humor edgy characters which is why he has Guy Gardner in the film.
The thing about art is that there are no "objectively better", it's all about harmony. There are no 'bad colors' in painting, but there are palletes that don't match. There are no 'bad notes' in music, but there are chords that feel weird. Zack Snyder is not an objectively bad hero movie director, his approach just don't fit Superman's message.

His watchman wasn’t bad but it really felt like he misunderstood a lot of the themes of the comic.
I'm all for new themes, but frankly, the John Williams theme IS the Superman theme! It's the main reason I feel optimistic about the movie.
I don't like how Snyder's effects either are done in super slow motion or done to look like a giant video game on high speed.
It would be nice to see more Henry Cavill finish his arc, same with Ben Affleck's Batman. But I'll possibly give David's version a watch to see how it plays out
Frankly I don't know what trailer many people are watching, the first thing seen in Gunn's trailer is a Superman falling defeated, in a Yamcha-style pose (even Crunchyroll made fun of that), panting and bleeding (what kind of "symbol of hope"? ” is that one? And they were complaining about Snyder), and then he calls his “cute” little dog Krypto to save him and take him home (that is, Superman is apparently useless in his first film), then being attacked and belittled by people so he looks “annoyed and dejected”… just like Cavill’s Superman in Batman v Superman (only here it is in his first movie), then the CW show-type cheap suits and cuts of the Justice League (or is it the Society?), an overabundance of secondary characters (and they complained about Batman v Superman, only here it is not in the second but in the first film), Clark's Bad Bunny hairstyle, the Snyder-type slow motion shots (which they criticized him a lot for but Gunn is applauded?), etc. The only thing more or less salvageable is Luthor and Lois Lane (but the latter is worrying due to the statements of one of those who originally auditioned for the role when she said that “she is the heroine of the film and she is the one who saves Superman”… So Superman is going to be an extra in his own movie apparently). “This is Superman”… the problem with that is that there was already a Superman that was a carbon copy of Cristopher Reeve… Superman Returns with Brandon Ruth and also the Cavill of the Josstice League and both were a failure, that's why Nolan and Snyder made a more “realistic” version with Man of Steel in response because they realized that the “happy and funny” version was no longer as attractive, but well, there are many people with their altered perception of reality. Has James Gunn never failed? Apart from the Guardians trilogy, everything he has done is rubbish and failures (TSS Squad, Peacemaker and creature commandos are failures at the box office and ratings, apart from the fact that Gunn puts his member jokes and unhealthy tastes in young people in abundance in those productions. )

James gunn is also doing creature commandos which has been great so far, I recommend. We see clay face a lot in Harley Quinn and even in the lastest episode of CC, I think he's probably just a hard concept to get right with cgi for the big screen

I like the Guy Gardner haircut being close to the bad haircut in the comics but also I seemed to be the only one that was like that's still not accurate, why does it have those long sides? Glad someone else finally said it.
I have this weird accuracy uncanny valley thing where if something is close but slightly off it’s even worse than being purposefully different. I had the same issue with Wolverine not wearing shoulder pads in Deadpool.
The only reason you need to give is that Gunn is a competent storyteller with an understanding and respect for these characters while Snyder is none of those things.

Snyder isn't a good director. He is GREAT at cinematography though. I think he's been destined to do a punisher or max Payne movie but after army of the dead, I gave up on him.

If it wasn't that both Jonathan convinced his soul of coming back and The Eradicator took his body to the Fortress of Solitude, he would never returned to life and it wouldn't happen again.
Except for the time the whole Justice League was killed in the past and spend 3 thousand years as ghost in a cave untill they were resurrected but that was another story.
That's also why Rebel Moon was so criticized, they set up so many things and the payoff is non-existent or contrary to the setup, and he's been doing that since MoS.
For me its the opposite. Zack snyder for me is someone whose soured over time. My fav films of his are DotD, Watchmen and 300. There's just a point were you find that Snyder does good scenes but good scenes doesnt make good movie. Most of his "good" movies are just adaptations of other peoples works

Windows are still reflective, especially at night, when this scene takes place. We see Ratcatcher’s reflection turn into her father, pretty direct symbolism there.

I thought about that giant saw for weeks after I watched Army of the Dead. If I remember correctly Bautista uses it to open a hatch and thats it. Wild, was so ready for some insane saw zombie shenanigans.
Gunn takes specific themes he wants a story to focus on and then creates that entire series around it. Guardians of the Galaxy from start to finish was about family. It never once tries to subvert that. Snyder has on record said he hated traditional heroes, it's why he liked Watchmen.

@night6724 He literally has...read his Watchmen interview. He has outright said "I had a buddy who tried getting me into 'normal' comic books, but I was all like 'Nobody is having s*x or killing each other. This isn't really doing it for me.'
He also has another interview where he talks about how when he was offered a chance to direct a Superman movie, he jumped on it because he likes to "deconstruct." He said he was going to "tear down Superman," that Superman was "the enemy." It is an objective fact that Snyder prefers dark, edgier stories. Good for Batman - awful for Superman. That's not what Superman is about. Superman is a resilient symbol of hope in the face of adversity. Batman is the one meant to reflect the darker, grittier aspect of the world. You even see that with the way Metropolis is bright and vibrant while Gotham is grungy.

Next how did MoS or BvS or JL deconstruct Superman? How did it tear down Superman or make him an enemy? In MoS he is constantly told about his destiny to be a hero. In BvS people look at him like a god and he sacrificed himself. In JL he literally listens to his fathers speak to him as he gets his new suit and takes up doing the Christ pose in the son and kills Stepphenwolf. How is any of that not hopeful?
@night6724 Because Superman is not *supposed* to be a godlike figure. He may have incredible powers, but he is still the same Clark Kent raised by Jon and Martha in his little town of Smallville. Snyder makes him out to be judge, jury and executioner. He isn't relatable at all, he's a deity figure in the DCEU when that isn't the essence of Superman. Superman's appeal is that he is just a good person trying to do right in the world. The "Christ pose" is exactly the problem. He's not a god.

There is literally a guy in the film who says something like “Maybe Superman isn’t a god and he is just a guy trying to do the right thing” and his whole point was most people in the world believe in some God and they project that onto Superman
Like Superman himself never basks in the glory or embraces being a god like figures. That’s how people view him which is a bit ironic since he went from an outcast nobody to being seen as the second coming of Jesus. But again other Superman writers have gone in that direction.

The only problem with people blaming Zack Snyder for what happened to these movies is at the end of the day 300 Watchmen Sucker Punch all with that dark granny look and tone and feeling of Wonder and happiness cinematically but slightly lacking a little bit of substance for more of an epic scale

James Gunn has a much more diverse skill set than Zack. Zack Mastered action and visual design, but that's it. Everything solo film he did was ahhs.
