Today we talked about what's the best pre emergent. We talked about how pre emergents are best applied and the best time of the year to apply pre emergents. Pre emergent how to and DIY is now possible due to battery powered back pack sprayers. These sprayers allow for proper calibration.
Few myths:
It doesn't matter how thick your lawn is you will still get weed seeds coming into the lawn. Pre emergents set you up for the future not the past. If you haven't been using pre emergents properly until now chances are you will have weeds for a few seasons. Pre emergents do not kill weed seeds. They disallow the weeds from rooting during the germination process.

I use the 3 month rate only because we end up with hot summer and the pre emergents are no good after it gets above 90 degrees constantly.
Subscribed! Where are you located? Just trying to get an idea when you are talking about months and temps. Sounds like you have longer winters than we have in Arkansas.
Ginja is in Utah
So apparently the liquid is no longer sold and of course it's the better one :(
Im starting up my company in Illinois and want to know exactly how you charge for your services? What do you charge for your services? I know its a sensitive subject.
This is seriously the best pre-emergent video out there ... thank you for publishing it. I am now a faithful user of Prodiamine on our 1.25 acre lot in Arizona.
Glad I could help!
Dude you're the best. Venturing away from golf for the past 7 years into ball field management. Thank you so much.
Great to hear!
Great info!! In Charlotte, NC...common Bermuda and 2 acres/flat...ordered Prodiamine this morning in 5lb container...looking forward to getting more results with my lawn maintenance. Used post emergent big box store products, kept cut at 2 inches and WOW did that Bermuda grass spread rapidly. Thanks for this info!!!!
happy to help!
I live in central Minnesota and tried a pre emergent for the first time last spring. I applied the granular treatment just after all the snow had melted and the top 2 inches of soil was soft. We have never had as beautiful of a lawn and weed free all summer.
Great feedback Tom!
What did you use?
@@chrisleighton8749 I ended up using AWARD DIMENSION. No weeds all season long. I use Menards 23-0-3 slow release fertilizer about 1 month after the dimension application then a winterizer in late fall.
@@tomn5880 ok thanks!
Another awesome video, I am taking charge of our lawn, and taking notes 📝, we did have a lawn service but next year no lawn service, I’m going to be the lawn service, I get it with the commercial service personnel, they can only do so much to each customer’s lawn, but if your lawn service guy won’t talk to you then do it yourself like I’m going to do, Sounds like your business is booming, and you take great pride in providing a great customer service and helping them out and telling them what to do and what is wrong with their lawn, we need more technicians like you or business owners like you in that area, again great information great videos
Thanks Tim. Really appreciate your support.
Very nice newly discovered videos. What I like about it is that I can hear the education in your vernacular. A lot of You Tube guys I can tell are Google smart and or only know there product from familiarity and not understanding. I am a new subscriber from NJ.
This particular video was killer. A lot better than a whiteboard demonstration.
Huge compliment. Really appreciate it. Any and all feedback is welcome. I enjoy the feedback and doing a better job making lawn care easier.
Applied PRODIAMINE 2wks ago Jan 30, 2020, we had plenty of rain since. Looking forward to some results. Also, we will use PRODIAMINE year-round because of cost over dithiopyr. Working on a fixed income at 75.
Hi PJ! Thanks for commenting. Prodiamine is soo much cheaper. No joke
Bravo! You take the time to read and respond to comments. That more than triples the value of subscribing because you answer questions I didn't yet know I have (had).
Thanks for the feedback Robert. I do my best
Really like the way you break things down. Keep doing what you do you are really gifted. I follow a lot of people on you tube but you are my favourite! Brilliant work!!!
Too kind Bill! Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel. I really appreciate it.
Thanks!
Question ... I am in AZ where it's been between 95° and 115°F all summer, just about to cool down to mid 80s. The ground temperature just before sunrise this morning was 79°F. What temperature should the ground be at 3" in before I apply my fall application of Prodiamine. Thanks for this video BTW ... it is my go to and I send the link to anyone who might be interested.
As it drops below 70 is ideal!
I want to thank you and also curse at you. Until this spring I was happy with my lawn. But now I'm obsessed. And also now I have the earthwise chipper I have opposite problem of to much browns for my compost pile. It all started when I tried to identify my quack grass. Why couldn't I get rid of this 6'x6' patch over the years. I sprayed normal spray, used weed n feed, and hand picked it for years. I soon realized I had several bad grasses. Quack, poa Anna, and bunching tall fescue. I have painstakingly hand painted blades of quack all summer. I shoukd have nuked an entire zone. But also I think I'm getting lots of quack grass seed germination. My spring overfeeding didn't go real well because I watered to long and the peat moss and seed washed off some big spots. Just a slight slope. Also a few dry hot days fried some baby KBG. But my labor day seeding is growing in much thicker. I used more heavy top soil and peat. And only 7 min water times. All the fescue was cut out and mew sod has blended in. Im getting compliments on my yard again. Oh also you got me using micro nutrients, milorganite, Humate. My neighbor is now feeling bad he has 60% bunching fescue. I know he is. Plus he has big patches of rye. I know he looks at my 100 %KBG with envy. You may have taken away many fishing trips this summer but my yard is kooking good. How deep do I go down this rabbit hole??
Being the Joneses is not an easy journey but when you see the look of envy on people's face it makes it all worthwhile. Nice job slaying that lawn!
When is best time to apply the prodiamine in utah? Is the dose 5.2 g per gal? And you suggest 10.4 g? Also what is a good sprayer for my yard 2500 Square feet. I don't think I need the battery powered . Are any of the hand pump backpack sprayers good
Great Explanation! I am a LCO in CT and this year is horrendous for weeds/crabgrass. I do 2 apps of Dimension .15 full rate and still had issues. I have used Prodiamine in the past and I am thinking next year doing what you have suggested. Also, you mentioned the battery operated backpack sprayer. I purchased 2 Maruyama battery sprayers about 5 years ago. I use them every day and I have not had an issue with either one. They are nicads, but the new ones are lithium batteries. They are excellent. I can spray for 1-2 days on one battery. I keep a spare in the truck.
5 years out of a battery powered sprayer is amazing. Well done. That's way cool.
Thanks for mentioning rain. In central Oklahoma, it's hard to determine with the heavy rains and unpredictable spring weather (some years long and wet and other years almost non-existent) ...all of course appearing just before the ever popular tornado season (which is a whole other subject). Thanks for the great video!
You're welcome!
Great presentation! When to apply duothpor in Florida panhandle zoysia? And where to purchase it?
Please advise and I love your lawn care info! You're The Man! Thanks
Just a few question's..
1)The pre emergent needs to go down two weeks before the ground temp is 55? How do you know its gonna be 55 in two weeks ?
2) How far apart do you fertilize and use pre emergent?
3) How does Pre emergent and fertilizer effect grass seeds ?
Pre Emergent advice for North Dakota please..
Purchased the home May of last year and nothing had been done pre emergent wise. The yard was thin and had pretty bad quack grass. I did a strong over seeding in the fall and was planning and purchased tenacity this year on recommendation to protect young roots from the overseed. I’m purchusasing a ryobi 4 gallon sprayer so would love your advice on what you think I should use this spring to control the quack grass and others. Thanks!
scotts says to apply water 2-3 days after puttin on dry lawn, on their weedex bags
yes, weedex. I must have been referring to the pre emergents. sorry for the miscommunication.
Very good information! The first person I’ve heard say what breaks down the pre-emergent 👊🏻
Thanks for the feed back! I hope you enjoy the content.
learn a lot, tons of great videos and knowledge , subscribed! I believe Ginja deserve a lot more views!!
Thanks JCW!!! Glad to know you have my back
Crabgrass seeds continue to germinate all season long, starting when soil temperatures 🌡 warm to 55 degress.
My question is aftergermination begins, does the majority of crabgrass seed germinate very early on? Say, 30 days from right after germination begins 75% of seeds for that season have germinated?. Making that first application of pre emergent the most important by a large degree?
Or do the seeds germinate at a relatively even rate all summer long?
crabgrass germination is 5 days. needs 55 degree plus soil temps for for 5 days straight. Crabgrass is an annual grass and germinates in the spring.
Great video.Perfect amount of needed information and background science.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would I use a pre-emergent to put down on dirt to keep weeds out for this upcoming spring?
Thanks for explaining how this stuff works and breaks down over time and how the other option compares.
You're welcome Jimmy. Thanks for the comment
Does it add any benefit to put down Prodiamine in early November and again in February and March? Thanks so much
Hello Pest and Lawn Ginja,
First and foremost, Thank you for all of your very-informative and extremely helpful videos. As a newbie lawn caretaker, your video have helped me tremendously. I finally learnt about preemergents and am very interested in using the Prodiamine on my grass. I am in Michigan, the temps currently are in the 20s-30s. I have Kentucky Bluegrass. I usually see a lot of Canada thistle, crabgrass and some broadleaf weeds on my yard, some dandelions too now and then. I dethatched my grass last year after watching your videos and fertilized it with Propeat, and it really helped, but the weeds still showed up now and then.
I am wondering if this Prodiamine application once the temperature crosses 35, and then a Dithiopyr application in May/June would work for the weed problem I am facing, or do I need to go for something stronger? Thank you.
Love that shirt Ginja, funny !
Thanks! RIP shirt. it was my favorite
BEST pre-emergent video ever! TYVM:) One question. How and when do you apply Fall pre-emergent? What is considered late for SC?
If you’re going to do it you’ll want to apply it as the soil temps are starting to get below 70 degrees. You can use a meat thermometer 🌡️ or a temperature meter found on line like green cast
Best and most informative video (in my opinion) regarding pre emergents for the D.I.Y. person...
Thanks jonathan! really glad to hear that you liked it.
Texas is always 90°. Is there a different protocol?
The greatest shirt ever!!!
100% agree!
I have to say I now know why it has to go down so early I always wondered thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You're welcome Andrew!
Here on the Central Coast of California, we get the wonderful weed called (Malva neglecta) common Mallow. These weeds are the Ironman of weeds, excepting some of the Thistle varieties, which are also very common. Last year, I picked a relatively small Mallow weed from soft/ sandy soil in our yard with a 4-foot root; it just kept going and going! Interestingly, both the Mallow and Milk Thistle are edible, but curses to you ever invasive Yellow Star Thistle- curses, I say!! Haha, I don't use many chemicals in the yard for controlling invasive weeds; I have a sturdy hand-pick and lots of sweat... Thanks, and take care!
we get a ton of common mallow where I'm at too. That's some crazy rooting you get! I use t-zone to knock it dead. works really well.
@@pestandlawnginja Haha, it was one I had mowed over for several months but never pulled it, so it had a chance to extend its roots. Thanks for the T-zone tip, I'll definitely give that a try!
@@pestandlawnginja Do y'all get goat head weeds- the ones that flattened my kid's tires 100's of times when they were young? UGH - I try to eradicate these damn things whenever and wherever I see them!
Any chance you could add to this video and talk about tenacity? Curious how were able to grow grass with tenacity.
In the works my friend! It's a great idea. Tenacity acts as a selective pre emergent. It's a funky chemical. I'm going to put it to the test.
@@pestandlawnginja Hey man! I appreciate it! I understand you can put it down with seeds but I really liked your explanation with the other preemergents. When to use one over the other. Would be awesome to hear your insight around tanacity.
I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to put it to the test Ginja style hahaha.
Hi, need some help! We are probably very late and havent applied a pre or a post emergent. Should we start with a post emergent to kill existing crabgrass and then apply pre emergent? Should we water the lawn a day or two after the post emergent and then do the pre emergent? Ours is bermuda grass. Should we also apply any nitrogen fertilizers? Sorry for all the questions, but I am quite new to lawn care.
Pre -emergents are for pre seed germination. So you would want to apply a pre emergent pre 47ish degrees F ground temp. Post emergents are for when the weed emerges and presents itself to you. Pre emergents need to be watered in and post emergents should stay dry according to the label recommendations. Bermuda grass is a very hungry grass in general. contact your local agricultural department extensions for local recommendations on how many lbs of nitrogen should be applied per season. This number will most likely fall between 4 and 7lbs per season of N.
My funds won’t allow for a sprayer so could you suggest a granular product I could use for pre emergent
It must be springtime as I'm watching some Lawn Ginja videos!
Rad!!! thanks for the support
Can prodiamine or dithiopyr cause root pruning in the spring to either established turf or turf that was seeded in the fall, or does it not get that deep in the soil (at least for the prodiamine)?
both have the potential of causation.
Great! I just bought a huge jug of Prodiamine ! Haha i like the idea of using both, so I’ll buy the dithiopyr
Love it.
I'm looking for a good product for my mulch and stone beds, as well as my lawn. Is it safe to say that this would also be a good process for the mulch and stone? We have a LOT of mulch and stone and do not want to spend all season weeding it.
Be fine for mulch and stone. Immediately water it in. You'll run a risk of some temporary staining
I'm a homeowner and just bought the Chapin 4 gal. 24 volt backpack per your recommendation. Reviewing this UA-cam to figure out for the third time which product to buy, either the Prediamine or Dithiopyr. Just as I'm listening, I first go with the Prediamine, then listen further and change my mind to the Dithiopyr, then go back to the Prediamine.. Do I flip a coin, or what? I got the new sprayer, but I also got the confusion. This stuff is expensive, so I must have the best product that will prevent my crabgrass from rooting again this year. It is everywhere and thick, and chocked my lawn last year. What do I do? My ground in Michigan is at 50 degrees currently.
If you don't get a lot of rainfall and have clay or loam soil go with the ditihiopyr. if you have moderate rainfall and sand/ loam or clay then go with prodiamine
Great video thanks never used pre emergent before but gonna try it. Do pets need to stay off lawn for a certain time after applying this stuff?
After it dries it's fine. Most of the side effects are via consumption.
Just subscribed and just getting into lawns and trees. Wanting to kill weeds near fruit trees we just planted. Are these two items ok to use near newly planted fruit trees? Thanks so much!
Personally i like to hand pull the weeds near fruit trees. you run a risk with whatever fruit tree if you spray the roots dead on. more specifically with oil based herbicides like ester based herbicides. I've been doing this a very long time and haven't experienced many issues with trees dying but the risk is there. when it comes to pre emergents i haven't really seen much of an issue.
I live in Northern California near the Sierra foothills it doesn’t get that cold here between high 30’s and mid 50’s in winter I’m on 5 acres and I want to kill all the grass and weeds that are on the property because the grass though it looks pretty in winter and spring quickly sprouts foxtails. What do you recommend to keep it from coming back year after year. Oh not to mention I also want to get rid of the grass because I live in a high fire danger area too
Great question. I would do 2 apps per year with prodiamine. Right before ground temps get up to 45 early spring and right when the daytime temps get regularly below 80. Between those apps I would consider a treatment or two with dithiopyr assuming the daytime temps are below 85. Most weeds to actively germinate above 85 degrees. Other than that glyphosate (non selective herbicide) will be your friend for killing everything off. You'll need to do a reapplication every two to three months or as the weeds come up. It's important to remember ore emergents disrupt current weed seed germination. If the weed has already germinated over the past 18 months It will still emerge and that's why we call herbicides post emergents.
Great information. What can I use to prevent POA?
Any of these work great
Prodiamine is going down end of fall! Thanks sir!
You tha man Donnie! Stoked for you.
Pest and Lawn Ginja I just gotta show you these photos. Quinclorac killed my crab grass 95% of its gone. I have only 2 more naughty weeds that dont want to go. Where can I share my pics?
@@donniereidjr check out my facebook page at facebook.com/pestandlawnginja
Pest and Lawn Ginja I’m not on Facebook! When are we gonna get you on Twitter? My family is a bit too unprofessional so I stay off because my company monitors that stuff! I’m aerating and seeding today! Thanks for everything sir!
What are your thoughts on IFA's 4 step program?
It's a decent macro program designed for our area
@@pestandlawnginja Would you recommend any other program?
My biggest issue with the IFA programs is the excessive use of Urea. I would find a fertilizer like propeat that uses ammonia nitrates as opposed to urea
This is so good I watched it twice to make sure I took good notes! Thanks!
Thanks Jay!
Do you have a good source on where to buy these products possibly at the best price? You right, these products are not cheap!
Online is usually cheapest. I price shop domyown.com against Amazon. Most of the stores will be within $5 of each other
You answered my question. Lets say us new joins want to put down Prodiamine in the Fall (and again in the Spring). If we overseed would that cause a problem?
If you apply it in the fall and it over winters then it will cause issues. be sure to run the verticutter or aerator before you throw the seed down in order to disrupt the pre emergent.
I live in California just north of San Francisco. The soil never gets below 55 degrees. I need to control signal grass. What do you recommend. Oh yes, I have about 1/2 acre of lawn. thank you
use:
Celcius herbicide - amzn.to/3kvCpFE
great to use if you have warm season grass types. not for use for cool season grass.
Lawn Ninja, what would recommend for area you dont want anything growing but has trees *dont want to kill) growing 10 to 15 feet away from area that needs cleared?
Most won't like to hear it but I prefer to use a combination of glyphosate every two months and a combo of glyphosate and pre emergent every other app
I'm located in Fredericksburg VA and i'm trying to retake control of my lawn which is filled with crab grass due to me outsourcing all of my lawn care needs and then resulting me firing them all! What products would you recommend right now starting this weekend to retake control of my lawn in order to have a great looking lawn?
So many factors to consider. Ph of the soil is the big one. PM me on facebook
if i did a lawn reno sept. 12 grass looks great now should i wait for the pre emerg. till April? I did use Scotts starter seed with meso. 3 times. lite application yesterday for the 3rd dose. I heard it will take out the new root system even if i do it in April. Also is the Granular version better for slow breakdown if you have heavy rain?
I'm not a huge fan of pre emergents if you can avoid it. If you have a history of weeds Its a preferred method to stop the process of germinating new weeds. it does effect root growth but i wouldn't say i've seen it kill a lawn. the meso apps only last 3 weeks tops as a pre emergent. If you were dilligent on monitoring your ground temps then i would stay that route this season. just be sure to apply it at the right time. crabrass germinates 5 days at 50-55 degrees F soil temps.
I cover numerous lawns in the north east and tend to get bombarded by either weeds one year and crab grass the next...What do recomend. Spray with the pre and post and add a granular or liquid for growth stronger roots at some point?
Thanks for reaching out Lou. Weeds are generally an I dictation of calcium being tied up or a deficiency in the soil. I would revisit your fertilizer plan and see what you're missing.
As for the secondary issue be sure to get your prodiamine levels down early and consider a fall app.
Just remember, your annuals and biennials weeds that come this year are from 2017 and 2018. Post emergent herbicides control them.
@@pestandlawnginja , thank you. I will go with post liquid in March wait five weeks. Then will base it on growth. Mixing post and pre is a big negative?
No. I do it. Just remember you want the pre down prior to ground temps getting above 50 degrees. I put mine down 45 degrees or lower at the higher rate on the label
What is the best way to get rid of crabgrass in dandelions that are already growing
Dithiopyr I'd there just leafing out or a combination of mso and quinclorac
Ok, my soil temp is 56 degrees. I used Tenacity last year. Works great. My question is. There is few Dandelions but getting some creeping Charlie. What can I mix with the Tenacity to kill the creeping Charlie. Thanks for your help.
carentrazone and triclopyr ester.
I live in arkansas and have bermuda grass. I did not spray a pre-emergent and had quite a few weeds. I blanket-Sprayed 2-4d amine across the yard. I killed a lot but there are weeds still growing. What do you recommend I do? Continue to spray the 2-4d until fall and then use a pre-emergent? Thanks
I have a rose bed right in front of our house there's lots of weeds and grass growing in the area, I'm going to clean up the bed as best as I can now how would I go about keeping weeds and grass from growing in the area thanks in advance.
Preen garden weed preventer is your next step. It's a pre emergent. This will help stop weed seed germination. To be applied 2 to 3 times per season. It works best after you have picked out all the weeds first.

What about using hose sprayer attachments for these solutions? Thanks
It's doable just harder to calibrate and apply evenly
I was all for fixing my lawn until I seen the price of the dithiopry, over $200 for a gallon? I'm in so cal..starting to heat up now..would these products even work this time of the year?
It's all about the ground temperature. If its post 55 degrees you'll only get post emergent control of crabgrass up to the 3 leaf stage, you will get limited pre emergent control since most seeds complete the germination between 50 and 60 degrees.
Lawn Ginja I have Prodiamine. When should I put it down in North Carolina?
I dontt hink I put mine down in time because boy I got insane weeds, but in all fairness I think it comes from across the street. My neighbors yard is riddled with weeds.
It's all about the soil temps. before 55 degrees in the spring time and before 65 degrees in the fall time. be sure to keep on the proper watering to keep it active. If it heats up or dries out it also goes away.
Would you be able to make a video of how to apply to Pre/post emergent with a spray bottle . Want to make sure I am doing this right. Also, I am doing a lawn renovation and it’s been two weeks since I seeded. Should i use a post emergent after 4 weeks or wait until the spring??

Would it be beneficial to “just” use preemergent and fertilizer only?
What do you mean by "just". Lots of options with fertilizer and pre emergents
Hey Ginja, how are they compare to Tenacity? how long does Tenacity stay in the soil? the reason i ask is that i just bought a bottle of Prime Source Meso 4SC (generic tenacity)
Thanks
These products can be used with tenacity. Tenacity residual imo lasts about 4 to 6 weeks max
Can you mix the pre-emergent and tenacity together
Can you mix these pre emergents with broadleaf sprays like Amine 2 4-d?
absolutely!!! I also recommend a surfactant as well. I always recommend doing a compatibility test before mixing anything together, but my experience has shown that you can mix a variety of lawn care related products with pre emergents.
I put down Dimension when the ground temp was 50 degrees can I use the products your recommend in this video? Also my grass in brown from the winter. I also used fall feed and my grass is thin and brown. No new growth.
dimension is dithiopyr. If your grass is thinning and the ground temps are 50 degrees I would focus on the watering aspects. see myallgreen.com/watering and perform the video exercise at the end of the page.
Thanks for the video....I will use this product for my customers thanks...
Great to hear Matt!
Temperatures? Everybody knows by now that knows anything about Pre-Emergent herbicides that you want to have them down well before the soil temps reach 55 degrees, but I never hear anybody mention anything about soil temperatures for the fall pre-emergence herbicide applications? The Pre-emergence herbicides you put down in the fall - do they stop weeds from germinating and showing green weeds in my Zoysia lawn over the winter, or just set you up for the following spring weeds?
Great question. it will disallow any seeds from germination once applied correctly. it will prevent fall germination which disallows some annual fall weeds and some spring weeds as well.
@@pestandlawnginja At what soil temps do you start applying Pre-Em in the fall? I'd figure this is a bit more touchy as the warmer soil means more active microbes to eat away at the pre-emergents?
Can you mix prodiamine with Tenacity to kill existing weeds and prevent future weeds?
Yes! Suggested per the label
Pest and Lawn Ginja thank you
you're welcome!
I have dimension. To be clear I need to place it down when the soil temp is below 55 or above 55?
Best to apply on or right around those ground temps
I have a major Henbit problem. Any suggestions? I’m in Tennessee. And my lawn is Bermuda I usually scalp my lawn for the first cut of the year.
That specific question is more geared towards someone who has warm season grass. I would hit up grass factor or the lawn care nut. If you hit a dead end I will put in the study time and get you an answer
Ginja great video. My lawn was beautiful til June, then disease and weeds made my lawn tap out. There is good growth, but a lot of crab grass. Should I use Prodiamine in the here in September and in March to prevent these weeds? Also, in Junish when weeds start popping up again what product do you suggest? Thanks.
The september and march services make sense. I personally wouldn't put it down in June. Weed seeds aren't commonly germinating in the heat of the summer IMO. The microbes are also feeding fast and the pre emergent won't last very long in those temps.
That's why your the Ginja. Thank you sir.
anytime Zackje1!!! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Another excellent P&LG video! 👍🇺🇸
appreciate the feedback. onward and upward
Welcome!
Can I use a per-emergent prior to over-seeding my lawn in the spring? Wouldn't it prevent my grass seed from germinating?
Tenacity is one of the only pre emergents that allows to overseed within 3 weeks of a pre emergent application.
Hello, I’m in a sandy area in Minnesota. Ive brought in topsoil, and while Im getting the lawn established. Herbicide in late spring and seed in the fall. I have some open real estate for weeds. Not a big deal, Except for the sand burs Ive been pulling by hand. Do either of these work for sand burs? If so how often do you treat the lawn to prevent? And how much time do you need before you can lay seed again?
both of these products will help to disrupt weed seed germination. Sand burs are difficult because of the timing of which they germinate. If you were diligent in the application throughout the season I would say you'll do better than you're doing now. It may not be a saving grace for the first season. I commonly set peoples expectations to 2 seasons. The products do not kill weed seeds. Sand bur weed seeds can stay suppressed for years before they germinate. Regular post emergent herbicides and pre emergents will lead you in the right direction.
Hi Ginja, how will irrigation affect the application. Come fall in Phoenix, irrigation will only come 1/month. Would I just put it down immediately after irrigation has soaked in thoroughly. It's usually about 1-1.5 feet of water.
If you're flood irrigating at that rate I would put it down after the irrigation is complete and wait a few hours. Do the application when theres .1 of surface water

I’ve only seen a few Ginja videos and first thought it was a g like in “good.” Later, I heard him say it with a j sound so I thought it had to do with drinking gin. Here, he made a ginger hair color reference and it all makes sense. Though, I’ve only seen brown/tan ginger roots, so I need to go figure that out now.
Soo true! I had a little identity crisis early on whether or not i was going to be the ginger or the ginja. ginja prevailed in the end. good ears my friend.
Great video wit lots of good information. I live in Georgia and I have a nice size lawn but I am a novice. Can you post a video on the time of year to put down specific treatment preeminent and weed and feed? There are a ton of lawn videos on utube but they all skirt around the specifics. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I've touched on that a few times. the issue is this, it all depends on the ground temps being lower than 50 degrees for a proper application. if you put it down anytime after you run the risk of the weed seeds having already started or completed the germination process. get a digital meat thermometer from walmart and be sure to get your pre emergent down before it hits 50 degrees.
have you ever seen prodiamine BURN the lawn, blades mixed in or in spots? Made me wonder if the limits set per year are governmental or warning of damage to foliage.
speaking of burning, do you ever apply spray apps of potassium? Wondering if one over sprays the lawn would it burn the the grass also....
I've never seen "burning". I've seen it die the grass yellow when it was applied too heavy
Pottassium can poison if you apply too much for your area
If I use a fertilizer with phosphorus will I need a pre emergent as well..and also I have current weeds will that require a post emergent?
the pre emergent is used to disrupt seed germination. helps disrupt weed seed germination for the future. if your ground temperatures are above 65 I wouldn't worry about it until they get below 70 in the fall time.
Great video! if I want to overseed in the fall when should I put down the prodiamine?
My suggestion would be april of the following season depending on your region and if you decide to water the seed in heavily for 2 weeks when you put it down in the fall time.
Barbra Bell if you want to seed this fall you probably should use tenacity pre-emergent
I want to seed this fall and again in the spring. I also plan on spraying Prodiamine in the late fall and early Spring. Will I run into any issues? Should I wait a few weeks in between doing each? I live in the North East, thanks in advance, really learned a lot so far
Hey matt. These are great questions. The function of prodiamine is to disrupt the germination. If you overseed and force germination over two weeks you can apply prodiamine 2 weeks later. However, the prodiamine will overwinter causing seed germination disfunction the following spring. IMO you will not have a successfull germination next spring due to the prodiamine application from the late fall. You may be able to get around this little issue by doing a spring aeration or power rake followed by an overseed. Disrupting the soil will cause some failure in the prodiamine pre emergent. You'll need to force spring germination making sure there's plenty of water on the soil. You can then in return apply another dose of prodiamine 2 to 4 weeks later. You may cause other weed seeds to germinate in the process and in return will need to spot spray with a post emerging herbicide.
What about surfactants? Are they necessary with either of these two? I figure probably not for the prodiamine, due to its viscosity.
If you're going to use dithiopyr to attack the crabgrass I would recommend using one.
Great info I learned a lot..Will share with family indeed..
Thanks for the love A T . appreciate you watching and commenting.
Can you use a pre emergent when over seeding? Finally, what is best to use in rock areas, bare dirt, and around some plants to prevent weeds and to kill weeds just popping up? Would like something that I don't have to reapply often. Hope to hear from you!!!
I prefer to use snapshot!
Great video Ginja. Im in San Antonio with Bermuda in my lawn. When exactly (in the fall and spring) can I apply the Prodiamine? Thanks.
I'm in San Antonio too. Usually October is a good time to apply then reapply February next year.
@@angelnunez2851 thanks for the information. I'm a new homeowner and of course new to all this.
Great Reply Angel! Thank you.
If i plan to seed this week, can i put pre-emergent down too ? If not when can I ? Thanks
the overall answer is you cannot. But.... with that said. There is one type of spray called tenacity that contains an active ingredient called mesotrione that is a selective pre emergent. It lasts about 3 weeks and only works on cool season grass types.
Ginjaaa i just moved intoa new build home... the front half is sod with Bermuda grass the rest looks like a cemetery... about half an acre of land... i have nothing but weeds in my back yard that i can tell... what can i do to start this process??
If it's just baren ground than I would start by figuring out what kind of grass you want. check ntep.org. After you figure that out do two treatments of glyphosate (non selective herbicide) within 10 to 14 days kill it all off and then seed 2 weeks later.
Love the channel, I have Bermuda Grass and this season I had bare spots from too much shade, I got rid of the trees and wanted to let the grass fill in so I didn’t use preemergent, of course I have quite a bit of crabgrass that has gotten in there, my question is if I put down a preemergent this late summer early fall and of course on in early spring next year will the grass continue to fill in the areas that have been dominated by crabgrass if they are bare?
bermuda will still creep. The only thing you will lose is the lack of new seed germination. IMO i don't feel its best to apply pre emergents until the day time temps are below 80 degrees on the regular. Seed germination doesn't happen as often when temps are above 80 degrees.
Pest and Lawn Ginja cool, so that will put me likely into Oct for the pre-emergent, it stays warm where I live (ft Worth Tx) I want to make sure I get it down before annual blue grass (Poa) germinates because that’s the other fun grassy weed I get to deal with
Mike Eldredge go buy a meat thermometer and watch the ground temps. If memory serves me right poa annua germinates in warm temps at 70 degrees ground temps. May need to put it down earlier.
Just remember its all about the ground temps.
Pest and Lawn Ginja awesome! Will do!
How do you manage this in conjunction with power attaching blondes in the spring
that is a great question. just wish I understood what you meant by that hahaha
can you use pre and post emergent together? its canada here and we kind of pass the spring time.. what to do
Absolutely. I do it all the time
If we seed in spring and see the seeds have germinated after a month, can we then apply pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass from coming up in the summer? Will the preemergent hurt the newly germinated grass seeds?
I prefer to not apply pre emergent for the first 4 months. the pre emergents can stunt rooting. The only exception is a low level pre emergent called tenacity. I will apply this on occasion after 6 weeks post germination. it doesn't last long as a standalone pre emergent but it will kill some weeds in the process.
Hi , thank you for your videos I have used them to fix my lawn in the past, we are in July now and Crabgrass is taking over my yard because I never used a Pre-Emergent , what would you recommend now that the Crabgrass is already in my yard and going strong? Thank you
I have a video on that called Kill crabgrass, dallisgrass, clover in 5 easy steps. check the description of the video for recommended products.
I’m planning to put in grass plugs I have a clear lawn just plain DIRT ... would I apply this before I put the grass plugs ?? Or after I put grass plugs... thank you in advance
I would do it afterward if your soil temps haven't exceeded 50 degrees. disrupting the soil disrupts the pre emergents.
Thanks a lot for the information and quick reply.... thank you for the video’s....

What's the difference between Dithiopyr 2L and Dithiopyr 40 wsb?
Liquid vs wettable powder/granular
I'm out the door to buy my first ever post emergent TENACITY. Site One, our landscape supply company here in Michigan said to use a small amount of Dawn Liquid detergent if you can't find a surfactant. Will this be a pretty good solution (no pun intended) to mix in my TENACITY, or should I have the tenacity (pun intended) to stick (pun intended) to a non-ionic surfactant ??? Geez, the year is young, and already I used up all my puns for the year. But truly, does liquid detergent work as well? Or should I stick to a real good surfactant. See I already ran out of pun intentions....
dish soap is not a non ionic surfactant so if you want the best chance at a post emergent then answer is it will help a little. just to be clear tenacity is not a great pre emergent and its way more expensive than either prodiamine and dithiopyr. if you want a good pre emergent stick with the ones i mentioned. if you want annual grass post emergent control, clover control, oxalis control, etc tenacity does great. It was designed to put down for an overseeding project for cool season grasses.
@@pestandlawnginja I did put down Prodiamine a good two weeks ago in Michigan where the temps were just at 55 degrees, and now the temps dropped even lower as we had a good cold snap. I do have clover in good patches, and last year terrible crabgrass, and other kinds of junk in the lawn, so maybe the Tenacity would be good for spot checking the lawn, for sure clover, and some purple type weeds that are coming in now, and eventually white weeds with a good hardy root system. After a good rain last year, I went out and pulled by hand almost a quarter acre of some variety of white weeds, just about filled a 6 cu. f. t wheel barrow. I also have a huge patch of oregano, maybe 25 X 25 feet choked out the grass completely, and I'm hoping Tenacity will knock it down now so I can spot seed in September.
Lastly, I just bought a Brinly dethatcher, Brinly lawn sweeper, and I'll aerate bore hole the lawn before I fertilize. This is gonna be my newfound sport, and I hope to be a pro at it...well at least proactive. Thanks for your encouragement!

Hey Lawn Ginja, just like to get your input as to what would be the best or recommended granule weed killer for my lawn here in Southern Cal? I have a Marathon II & III which are a tall fescue. I will be applying a per-emergent in the coming fall but need something now for the current weeds... thanks for your help!
Granule weed killer...... for SoCal.....? To be upfront I've never been big on a granular weed and feed. I've seen a few function well for common dandelions but that was about the extent. I know scotts came out with a new granular weed and feed that I've heard was good but I've never had the chance to use it.
Here's a link to the product. You'll notice most of the reviews are mixed. I'm big on spray and using the right solutions for the right weeds. It's difficult to get the product to stick to the weeds. One thing I have suggested is to mist the lawn, spray for 30 seconds or less per station then apply the product. It'll help get some stick. Don't take my advice on the product though, I would read the label and see what happens. The pre emergent is a good decision. I was just there and you could put it down now.

Thanks P.L.G for the tip. I've always been lucky using granule weed killer but lately it hasn't been working so well. I heard some talk about Turflon Ester for marathon grasses, any idea on the effectiveness of that product? Appreciate your time & awesome UA-cam channel, keep up the great work!
Easter is basically an oil based 2, 4d. They work well for broadleaf weeds. I have never used it but I have heard of it. I haven't heard of anything negative if that's any consolation. The issue I have with granular is it's difficult to spread evenly. Use rate is the one thing that has to be perfect IMO.
If I have some leftover Prodiamine in the spray tank, is it OK to keep it there a long time, or should I empty the contents in a sepeate plastic bottle labeled, and rinse the chemical out of the sprayer. My new sprayer will be dedicated only to Prodiamine, but is the chemicals harmful to the washers, and seals, and does it eat away any rubber or plastic in long exposure times?
It gets a little gummy. It's almost like clay in the backpack. sits a bit heavy. I would find a place to spray the residual you have in the tank and rinse it out. just my 2c
