    I'm seeing some of the hateful comments on here and I just want to remind everybody that this young lady lost her grandfather and is taking his ashes back to India as a way to honor him while at the same time connecting to her roots. She is going through a spiritual and emotional journey that will shape and affect her for the rest of her life. How about we focus on that?

  • @sandrameesala6804
    @sandrameesala6804 8 років тому +517

    Some of the comments here are ridiculous. So just because she was born in the US she isn't Indian? My parents and brother were born in India but I was born here. So I'm not Indian? I think we are confusing ethnicity and nationality aka citizenship. They are two different things. She doesn't have to validate her "Indian? Identity to anyone.

      misuzu9254 One can't "get kicked out" of an identity. An identity is something that makes up who you are, what makes you unique. Sure we who are born here in American however America is a melting pot. American culture, as unique globally as it is, has roots in cultures around the world. And just because you live in such a place doesn't mean you can't partake in your ethnic culture in other ways, which she does, by the way. And yes, for the sake of simplicity we can call ourselves "Indian-American" however that only means you are a mix. No one has the right to say "You are not Indian enough." or "You are not American enough." You are Indian and your are also American. You are of both cultures.
      Anyway, I don't think that its bad to trace your ancestral origins but it can't go as far back of the Out of Africa theory. I believe because of statute of limitations kind of thing.

    To everyone getting all pissy and saying "She isn't from India! Stop saying that!" Okay, fine. She isn't actually from India and she phrased it wrong. However, her ancestry IS from India and it calls to her just like it does her father, who is actually from there. That's the thing people don't get about Americans. They think we just want to steal everyone's culture. That's not true. We don't have traditions here or heritage. We're a melting pot of ALL cultures. Sure, this is our home. But we want to be apart of our family history just as much as you. I may be American, but I'd kill to see Ireland or Germany because it's my heritage; to taste the food, breathe the air, see the sites, etc. I feel it in my heart. So, yes, we need to rephrase. But please stop hating on us for simply wanting to be a part of our heritage :/

    • @myohmyli
      @myohmyli 8 років тому +13

      True that! They probably should have phrased it differently. My mom is from the Philippines. My dad is a white-American with German, Irish, Dutch ancestry.. But he's more German. I love going to visit the Philippines, since that's where my mom is from. I've never been to Europe before.. And it seems like the white side of my family isn't very interested in visiting most European countries.. But my dad does say that the only country he's really interested to visit in Europe is Ireland.

    • @meganisthemann
      @meganisthemann 8 років тому +2

      This is so true! My friend always tells me that I'm not really Spanish because I've never been to Spain, but I was raised in a Spanish household by a true, 100% full blooded Spaniard grandmother. Same with my Maltese heritage (my mother was half Spanish and half Maltese). It really irritates me because that is my heritage and not all of us have had the privilege to visit the homeland of our heritage (he was born in Ireland and his family is fortunate enough to visit often).

    • @iloveicecream127
      @iloveicecream127 8 років тому +1

      my only disagreement to the original comment is that she said America is a melting pot... that is the biggest lie that I have ever heard in my life living here in the US it's more like a salad. and yeah it calls to you but it will always be different for people who grew up there vs visits once or twice.

    • @PopeAshhole
      @PopeAshhole 8 років тому +4

      Melting Pot... Salad.... Same thing. America is a BLEND of all cultures that migrated here. Most of us are mixed. Which metaphor you choose doesn't change the message.

    All these comments about Michelle not being Indian. I'm really upset. Michelle is Indian because she is of Indian descent. Her father is Indian. Her family worked to get to America but that doesn't mean she isn't Indian. I am Vietnamese. My father is Vietnamese. My grandparents fought to get here after the fall of Saigon. I was born in America but I know who I am. Maybe you should find out who you are before you tell someone what they are and are not.

      +Waverley Vuong hmmm I get what you're saying but culturally she is not Indian, she is American. Ancestry wise yes she is at least part indian. It'd be like me saying that I'm Norwegian (I am from the UK) because I have a norman surname. Ancestry-wise I could be, but culturally I am not Norwegian at all. I know my case isn't the best comparision as it's a much longer time frame. Like if an American says that they are British, I'd say no you're not if you've not lived here and don't know the culture when why claim it, I don't have a problem with people saying that they have [blank] ancestry.

    • @timmking7533

      +Waverley Vuong Exactly. I don't understand how people can't grasp the concept that ethnicity and culture aren't the same thing. I was born and raised in American culture; I'm American. However, ethnically, I am English.

    • @WHYOSHO
      @WHYOSHO 8 років тому +5

      +Fur Fox Sake American culture itself is very diverse as well; you have to be really distinct. For example Black American culture is different from other American cultures. A Vietnamese girl in LA and a Vietnamese girl in Atlanta have similar Vietnamese cultures; but pertaining to where they were raised, those two girls practice different American cultures. It's one of the interesting things about living in this country, nobody is exactly the same.

    to all the commenters, ethnicity and nationality are two different things. just because she was born in america doesn't mean she isn't of indian descent. that's why it's indian-american and not just american. ethnicity is in your blood so being born somewhere other than where the majority of other people of your ethnicity are born doesn't make you not of that ethnicity. america doesn't have a national ethnicity anyway so being american definitely doesn't do anything to your ethnicity.

    This reminds me of me every time I visit Germany, where my mom was born and raised. I visit as often as I can afford and every time I have to come back home to the States I leave a bigger and bigger piece of my heart in Germany. Last year when I went especially, I almost didn't get on the plane home. And I know the next time I go to Germany I will not be able to leave, ever.
    I hope she finds new things about herself to keep herself connected to India, and that she too keeps a piece of her heart there to go back to.

    i feel like i could relate to this on a personal level. my dad was a refugee from the vietnam war and went to hong kong to continue his life. his family at the time was scattered across vietnam. some were in ho chi minh(my dad was as well) and his brother was at nha trang and a few others were in hanoi. they got out of the country in different ships and arrived at different places. some got sent to america, canada and also hong kong. He (my dad) started a family in hong kong and eversince our family has never been back to our roots(vietnam) until 2 years ago. it was a surreal experience. my family was seeing what has changed since then and i was thinking that this might've been the life i could have had. being raised in this city and being another person that i never thought that i would've been. loved this video Michelle, and my condolences to you and your family for your loss.

Being where i was in the middle of nowhere on a ranch i learned alot more of my dads past and how life used to be in mexico gowing up in the 1960s and it really shows a lot more of your parents life before you were born, may your grandfather rest in peace.

      Okay guys, why would anyone from any country immigrate? Why would they leave their home and almost everything they hold dear? The do it to survive. They do it because their circumstances their home country/city aren't in any way favourable. Yes, not all Indians are poor or under developed. It's come a long way and will continue to grow, however you shouldn't blame anyone for being grateful for not being raised there. You should instead hope that one day, the world develops in such away that people won't have to feel that way. That the world grows to house all it's citizens fairly.
