Sean McCarthy, a very beautiful, courageous writer and lyricist of songs that I have just come to know and appreciate. Thank you, Peggy Sweeney for your beautiful singing.
It was only a few years ago that I got to know that all those great ballads were composed by one great man. Underrated indeed... we should know at lot more about Sean McCarthy.
Sean used to book me at his Crubeen folk club in Winstanley Road, Clapham Junction in 1964/65. He was a lovely and talented man and became a good friend. I always had a great time at his club. Sadly missed.
Thank you, sliotharball, for posting this timeless masterpiece. We need to make sure this culture is preserved.God bless Peggy and RIP Sean. A Kerry Hill----Magnificent.
Gaelic Football is not the only thing Dubs and Kerry people have in common. It is also the Irish Ballad. Sean was a great song writer like Pete St John and Brendan Phelan. I knew his brother Mick who owned the Embankment in Tallaght and the later Lady Gregory in Jervis Street. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
I have, somewhere in my attic, a poem written by Sean McCarthy when he lived in NY, about a night in Cully & McAllister's pub at 524 W207th Street. I remember Sean, who was some old mate of my dad's from Kerry, snoring on our couch when I was a kid in NY. I'll try to find that poem over the weekend. It used to be framed on the wall in the same pub in the early 70s.
A lovely & talented man. Met him in liverpòol in the sixties when he wrote me a song , still have the paper he wrote it on . His songs Are fantastic sad to hear of his passing but great memories of being in hes company RIP Sean. Bill.
