It boils down to simple math. Bethesda has small lots and houses are back to back. Home prices are anywhere from $400-600/sqft. Potomac has large lots, more space and houses tend to be more spread out. Houses trade at $250-350/sqft, so bottom line you can get about twice as much house, more acreage and more peace and quiet in Potomac vs. Bethesda, but are trading off about 15-20min of extra commuting to DC, and a little less retail density.
I like the area of Bethesda better, but I like the Potomac homes more. If I’m paying $1.3M for home, I’d expect at least a 2 car garage, let alone one at all. Silver Spring and Takoma are also nice and a bit more affordable for Bethesda for a lot of the same amenities.
