HOA should be made a crime

Not a big HOA fan but also not going to live by Airbnbs ever again. At least some HOAs keep those awful short term rentals away from the neighborhood.

I was born in Myrtle Beach, SC and after I retired from the USAF I moved back and bought a home. I already knew about the crooked HOA situations. I refused any offers dealing with a HOA! So I found a nice 2/2 within walking distance of the beach (I am single)! I am so glad I did my research before getting "caught" in a HOA! I could not be happier now!

Ocean City is terrible, everything in the state is far too expensive, it's way too crowded until you get the the shore or out west. Maryland is a terrible state and I can't wait to move out of this deep blue shit hole

Montgomery County used to be clean and well-run. Now, it's dirty and poorly managed. Add horrible traffic, stupid politicians, and bad schools.

I was an HOA president in the Phils BUT the HOA does not have the right to foreclose a property or sell it..responsibilities include making sure all members follow policies and guidelines.. collect monthly dues.. represent the subdivision and maintain peace and order in the community.. homeowners should be the priority to protect.. without homeowners, there won’t be any HOA.. Which body oversees the HOA? Who regulates them?

Spot on about counties. I say Harford County to people who have no clue what the counties are out of habit.

I live in an HOA. It’s funny, we do not have a board, but rather a decent management company. The reason? None of the tenants want to vote and those that want a seat can’t get any votes, hence, vacant seats for ages 😂.

The myth is a HOA will keep out problem neighbors. The opposite happens. You get a lot of trailer park mentality people in HOA. They think everyone else has to follow the rules, but they don't. You give up a huge amount of control. Say the HOA has a huge amount of turf in common areas in Phoenix. As water costs increase a bunch of owners want to remove turf and replace with desert landscaping. A bunch of other owners want to keep the grass. Either way one bunch will not get what they want. The more you pay the better your neighbors. This is exactly what "location, location, location" means. Neighborhood only become "desirable" because better people move in and then over time houses get upgraded.

I'm 51 and been a Marylander most of my life as I was born here and lived in Baltimore County for most of my life. I did grow frustrated with Maryland in 2010 and moved to Portland Oregon for 3 years....but I got very homesick as though Oregon was a beautiful state my heart belonged to Maryland. After witnessing the continuous downfall of Baltimore County my wife and i got fed up and purchased a home in Harford County in 2019 and it made me love Maryland again

Do not move to Maryland. Most people who are able are leaving this disaster of a state. Once a wonderful place to live and thrive, it has become a democrat dominated and managed wreck. Excessive Taxation and mismanaged revenue , a sanctuary for illegal aliens and the discarded homeless are the normal way of doing business. A truly beautiful state on its way to becoming California on the east coast.

As my mother use to say, "A preventative is better than a cure, any day." That is a fact. When my husband and I bought our home in 2006, we were unaware that we were in the middle of the sub-=prime, housing crises, adjustable rate mortgage dilemma, and other names they were callng it, without letting buyers know what was going on. Luckily, some things are just a matter of common sense and do not need any coaching. As we waited over the months for our loan approval, I watched many news items and read several articles which I thought would help us to navigate the home-buying process. One of the major things that grabbed my attention, was the HOA managed communities. I wondered were they really necessary and if what they offered the homeowner was worth the price, the potential for the fees to keep rising, and whether or not you could trust the HOA to keep their promise to buy your house back, if you changed your mind later on in the process. I heard horror stories time and again, and realized that the homeowners had an uphill battle on their hands, when trying to litigate their crises and the attorney fees that it would cost them. I knew, not only no, but HELL NO was I goining to fall for that boogy foolishness. Now, though my husband has passed on, I still live peacefully in our home and enjoy it so much. Don't do it. Those companies need to be allowed. They are helping to ruin the american dream.

The part I never understood is why an HOA can sell a property for much less than market value. If they are auctioning it then they are probably keeping the auction secret so that only people connected to HOA management can bid on on it. That sounds like fraud or theft to me.

Why would someone pay hundred of thousands of dollars and have zero freedom in their own house?

Montgomery County was one of the first sanctuary jurisdictions in America. Within 3 years their schools were over enrolled. Every morning I wake up, look across the Bay and smile because I don't live in Maryland. But Virginia is trying hard to catch up.

The worst things about Washington, DC are: 1. Insanely high crime rate: mostly murders, carjackings, muggings. City hall won't do anything about and since the city is full of liberals who love defending criminals and since the criminals are black they'll call you racist if you complain. The city has the highest percentage of incarcerated, previously incarcerated, or on parole population anywhere in America. 2. Rent is expensive 3. DC is loud. The residents are rude, they speak loudly, they blast their music from their cars and stores and refuse to wear headphones when listening to music, even in nature. 4. The city is full of idiots. They complain about gentrification, but displacing the low IQ residents would be the best thing possible for the city. 5. The locals are insanely hostile - they don't like tourists, they don't like foreigners, they don't like people from out of town, and they hate White people. 6. The subway stations are hideous and although they work pretty well in the suburbs, riding them through the city can cost your wallet or your life. 7. It's nice that there are people from other countries - either diplomats, people working for foreign organizations or immigrants, but again, the locals treat them all poorly especially if they're European. 8. There's no diversity of thought, the city votes 99% Democrat every election so all the insane policies that go along with that are here: trannies everywhere, pornographic books in schools, crime, etc. 9. It's 3-4 hours away from the beach, it's literally quicker to fly to a beach destination. 10. Moving out to the suburbs is no guarantee that you'll avoid these problems because a lot of apartment buildings in the suburbs are sometimes forced to shoehorn in "affordable housing" mixed in with the regular apartments which means what looked like a once quiet and safe neighborhood can quickly devolve into something much worse very quickly, I experienced this firtsthand. 11. Restaurants are expensive, living in metro DC will definitely make you into a good cook right away because once you go out for tomato soup and grilled cheese and pay $24 you'll realize how smart it is to cook at home. 12. It's dirty. Most nations, even poorer ones (I've visited 30 and lived in 3) make an effort to keep their capital cities clean as a way to showcase it to those visiting from abroad but that doesn't happen in DC. Locals are more than happy to throw trash on the floor, there's this local phenomenon called "the tumbleweave" - which is like tumbleweed in the desert except it is hair weaves flying around the streets. Not charming. The parks and creeks are filthy.

I live in Northern VA, and I hear on the local radio station almost every day of murders and carjackings. I used to love to do a short getaway to DC on a weekend, but It's too dangerous now, I haven't went there for a couple of years.

Dc is full of politicians / feds and the legion of fools that work for them. A cesspool…and in my growing list of no-go cities.🤮

HOA's need to be outlawed and abolished. They are nothing more than a group of petty, punitive people with illusions of granduer. It's a place for all of the Karens and Kevins of the world, where they can wallow in their own self importance while making home owners miserable. NEVER buy a home in a community controlled by an HOA, you will regret it!

When you were talking about politics and the breakdown of the state you said the most populous areas went "Democrat". The name of the party is the Democratic Party. Years ago Republicans worked hard to call the Democratic Party the Democrat Party probably as a way of eliminating the seeming political advantage of having 'democratic' associated with the opposition. We live in a HOA for the past 5 years and we have never had an issue, I wish HOA's didn't exist when I hear these sad stories.

It should be written into our rights that you can exit an HOA at the end of the year and you have the option to enter it when buying a house.

One other thing, new builds can also make neighborhoods be a bit "cold," because everyone is new. It can take years to establish.

Interesting, I asked Lennar for references and they never gave it to me. I pulled. This was for Frederick, MD. Also, take a look at the location they're building in. I found out that Frederick has a bunch of new builds being built near a major Superfund site. Mt realtor told me nothing about this. Also, interview inspectors, hire one that does phases. Also ask a builder if they allow roof inspector. I had one inspector who told me he had some trouble with new builders saying he couldn't look at the roof.
