Just had half my Brussels munched overnight. No idea how they got through the netting, but so far the Brussels and Pak Choi has been the victims. Not spotted my kale and kalettes just yet. Will give the products a go. thanks.

The Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar main food source is Fushias.
Brilliant I found one on my Fushias last year , thought it was scary the way it looked at me.
Thank you for your informative video on how to combat those pesky critters. When I had to deal with them I actually inspected my cabbages daily for any eggs and promptly removed them so none actually got to hatch out.

I have a decoy cabbage in my polytunnel and seem to be going to that one although there is also a nasturtium hanging basket in there as well. I don’t spray and have to manually pick the little critters off cheers 🍻
Hi Tony, I wouldn't suggest letting chickens to help control the catapillers, we had tree rescue hens and love brassicas, they will strip the plant in minutes. If you think pigeons are bad, wait until you see what the hens can do. Great video as usual, keep up the good work
If you have chickens, you could collect the caterpillars and feed them to your chickens.
Has become my after work habit, straight down the garden and look under young leaves for eggs. They are connoisseurs of the young foliage tend to leave older leaves till last in my experience.
I spent a few hours sat in front of the TV sewing up the holes in the seams of debris netting with black thread and there was still a butterfly in there the other day. Tip: Don't let the leaves touch the netting or they just sit on the outside and lay the eggs inside.
Yes I learned that too. Now have a frame to keep the mesh away from leaves. Mesh and netting too costly to lose the crop after all. I'm using net curtain on a diff bed and voile on other stuff while they await their turn to get a mesh cover.
I do the same as Vee and it dose work the best.
The finer netting works as long as the leaves do not touch it, they can still lay their eggs on the leaves by sitting on the net. Clever critters! Great video, thank you!

I've actually decided that I like seeing butterflies more than I like eating kale, so I'm just letting them at it. Not so happy with the leaf miners eating my beet and chard though...
i ended up pulling all my chard. was being attacked badly and my beetroot was next to it. i took all the bad leaves of the beetroot. seemed to calm down after that. i wont grow chard again now.
Interesting video, I only have a patio garden and grow everything in containers so unable to put netting up as everything is concrete, this year I wanted to see if cabbages, kale, cauliflowers and Brussel sprouts would grow in 30cm pots, and I am/was really happy as they are doing so well, until the caterpillar invasion. I sat last week and went through every leaf and picked them off with tweezers one by one, it took about 2 hours and in a weird way was actually quite therapeutic, but alas the next day there were more caterpillars, not even sure where they came from, I am getting a tad disheartened, but cannot kill anything so I put them all in a bucket with some cabbage leaves and hopefully they will survive, not sure about my cabbages etc, at this stage, I am happy to find a balance between keeping the butterfly population going and keeping my greens. I have learnt a lot about caterpillars though, and didn't know they could produce so much poo! which in some way is a good fertiliser for the plants. So it's swings and roundabouts, finding a balance between you and nature. And hopefully in the future I will be able to use netting and still grow some cabbages just for the butterflies. Btw, this video was excellent. Spot on. We have a rooftop garden in Staten Island N.Y., and everything is in containers. The horn worm/caterpillar is a nuisance. Don't need them destroying our tomato plants.

Oh I forgot to ask where did you get your BT from Tony as I use those floating bt rings and the powder looks a better idea, thanks mate.
I just pick them off for the most part. I don’t want to do poison. Especially on something I’m going to eat. I have don’t the garlic and pepper spray and that helps with some of the damage but I’m not sure about caterpillars. It did stop the slugs. I plant my beds all mixed up though. Some of this and some of that. Flowers herbs and veggies all together and I do think that helps the most.
Thats a good idea plant or give them an area. I did remove the ones i had by hand, so annoying when you have raised the plant and its growing well and you find it stripped of its leaves 😭

I have a sacrificial cabbage but they appear to be ignoring it. Likewise my nasturtiums. I check every day and the eggs are fairly easy to spot. I rub them off. Also spray with BT. I protect young plants with nets but find them a pain as the weeds grow and you have to move the nets. Neem oil has mixed reports so I won't use it.
I use Enviro Mesh all over my Raised Beds by making hinged lids and attaching the mesh to them, seems to work ok for me so far?

You should cover with tulle. The holes are smaller and nothing could pass through but water.

Mine's in German but the illustrations show one scoop that's provided and 1 litre of water.

We have frogs but I'm not sure if they eat the caterpillars. I have marigolds in my brassicas, I'd heard that it works but still had to clean a bunch of eggs off the back of the kale leaves.

My mentor always taught me to plant Marigolds in a corner as sacrificial.( He actually said plant them for the neighbours lol ) 😂
How do we use spray on deterrents in all of this rain? It just gets washed straight off. Checking and netting isn't enough, especially if you only have a tiny garden and every plant is precious.

I attracted birds thinking they would eat caterpillars didn’t know the birds would become the pest they eat any young plant and especially love pea shoots and are currently eating my lettuce 😳

I have to say Tony, we can't let the chicken loose in the kitchen garden. The eat the greens, scratch up the beds and and peck holes in the tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and even the pumpkins and melons. Even on the odd occasion when we have had just one get in for an hour or two they do some major damage. No, here we have a zero policy for chickens in the kitchen garden.

Its an Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar. I get loads of them. I've seen them being closely examined by crows, but the birds flew off when it reared up! I leave some cabbages unnetted for butterflies to enjoy. Seems kinder than squishing them. X

It's a Hawkeye Elephant Moth Caterpillar, I have only ever seen one when I was a kid in the 70s, me, my mum and brothers all freaked out when we saw it as they are huge my dad glanced up to see what all the commotion was about and identified it straight away like we were thick for not knowing what it was! 2020 has been a year for weirdness, I have seen both a red and black moth and a humugus beetle which I had never seen in my life before.

They're big things, mind. My dog unfortunately thought I was delicious otherwise my kids were fascinated but the dog was obviously too peckish.
If you kill caterpillars no butterflies 😥 surely better to plant a few sacrificial host plants?
Im in the UK and have the caterpillars this summer. I grow tobacco plants in the garden. About 30 or so.. Always been attacked by slugs in previous years.
Some damage, but huge leaves. Mostly on lower one's. Not a major problem.
We put a butterfly tree in the garden last summer, thats grown to about 5' this year. The caterpillars have really started to munch away through those big tobacco leaves. Toxicity of the tobacco leaf doesn't bother them either.
I can't believe how much damage has been done. One plant attracting the butterflies that have laid eggs everywhere.
I've dealt with some bad garden pests. Experienced caterpillars.. the worst pest.
Won't get much baccy for smoking now. Probably lost the lot. 🤬🤬🤬
All my brassica are under nets and not touching the netting but the butterfly's have laid their eggs on the net as they cannot get in. I let the eggs hatch and it was cabbage whites. Who ever said they don't have brains.
I've been assured by a friend , that blue netting will keep the white butterflies away , because apparently they can't see through it , they can smell the plant but can see it .
The caterpillar is a elephant hawk moth they tend to eat rosebay willow herb and other plants that have pink flowers as it camouflages the actual moth ( easy way to tell if it’s a hawk moth is that they have a spike on their tail )

I seen some caterpillars longer than my hand and bigger than anyone of my fingers already looking like little insect sized parachutes in a way
I use BT but I also feed the Sparrows and early in the morning they jump all over my greens hovering up the caterpillars.
I find a bird table filled with seed and fat balls , hardly seen any slugs this year , loads of birds in the garden this year , more than usual, seen em with slugs in there beaks , brilliant , only down side the birds have Eaton all my Livingston daisy's in may
My worst garden pest is the animals everyone loves. Squirrels are stealing my green tomatoes & stripped the young ears of corn CLEAN right on the stalk. Rabbits eat my greens. My cherry trees & berries are all giant birdfeeders & chipmunk headquarters. The only thing nobody will touch is a pumpkin. So if I DID have insect problems, honestly - I would never know!! Too upset over the "wildlife". I'm pretty sure I'm the only house around that hasn't converted my yard into some form of "gracious outdoor living", that right there might be the reason for all these besieging activities. My yard is the only buffet available!! I'm getting better at putting up fence, I can tell you that.
Really sorry you are having such a bad experience with the animals and birds in your garden Dorothee. I remember one autumn a couple years back I was in tears because the grey squirrels from nearby wood destroyed my apples. I don't mind sharing but they ate a bite of one here and one there and they were all damaged and on the ground...what a sight! Get black light flashlghts.
And as far as strong smelling herbs, the caterpillar WILL eat the heck out of your plants also! Just like they say rabbits dont like Peppermint or other strong herbs myth ! My wild cottontail rabbits don't eat them but will use my potted herbs to make their nests in there!! Lol
Yeah I saw like twenty sparrows all over my kale plants. They must be eating the insects. Natural pest control

iv herd that if you plant a bed of nettles that caterpillars like that better than brassicas then you can use it in compost after for nitrogen but haven't tried it lol but i have looked up you can buy nettle seeds
Pity u don't live here in NI cause I'd give u nettle plants. We make nettle 'tea' as a feed for our plants and then keep putting them on compost as well.

Do you know the best killers of cabbage white caterpillars...Wasps,I had a nest at the top of my vety large garden,and I didn't bother them and they never bothered me,in fact I talked yo them..green fly,black fly,cabbage white eggs not one did I have last year,this year unfortunately the artic weather I think killednyhem...I do miss them I have had to go out and spray,and, rub them off with my fingers,what a bind...you must careful not to put your fingers or Gran Mr wasp.but...oh I do miss them this year ...
Caterpillar is a hawk moth. Wont eat your veg.
Have tried all sorts netting with limited success the pick um off and squish em seems the most successful to me. Not a lover of any chemical if I am going to eat the veg you spraying on to. That's why we grow our own.

It is a hawk moth.
As a gardener, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves on catilillar identification so we are not randomly killing caterpillars that are actually butterflies that are pollinators or even endangered species! But the cabbage white...grrrr!!
But cabbage whites are BUTTERFLIES and great POLLINATORS. Instead of killing them, do what I do - plant patches of nasturtiums among your other stuff. They will then ignore the other stuff and thrive on the nasturtiums. I have a three-level planter, petunias on top level, nasturtiums in the middle, lettuce on the bottom. Nasturtiums being stripped, petunias and lettuce untouched. I have another patch of nasturtiums to which I will transfer the caterpillars if they manage to clear out the nasturtiums.
Geoff Foreman uses rhubarb leaves juice. Boil the leaves and then spray the plants. Check his channel out.

So as stupid as it sounds I’m terrified of caterpillars, centipedes and millipedes all of the little bastards. They terrify me. I’m ok with snakes and spiders. But yesterday when I was pulling off some of the dead leaves, I found two caterpillars I was ready to cry unfortunately they’re in huge firma so they will have to go after a different organic stuff and it never works. I could be doing it wrong. But my flowers r my me time. A way for me to unwind. So I’m on a mission to kill every one that’s in my garden
i just plant 5 o 6 cabbages along the back fence and they get covered in caterpillars, loads of lovely butteflies. butteflies love nettles and thistles , trouble is the famers and councils constantly cut , hedges , verges and wild areas to the ground, killing all the wild life. go with extra crops as a sacrifice to the critters and netting, stop the killing talk and stop treading deliberately on snails , put my missus right off your videos now, organic is not to kill but to try and live with them
I use the nasturtium method letting them self seed and sowing new ones every year. I sow herbs in every nook and cranny and have flowers and scented plants to confuse the pests. Our garden is a haven for birds with several different species nesting in and around the garden and feeding their little broods. The chickens are one of the best predators, pity you can't have them cause they and ducks do for the slugs as well. Your plot looks grand Tony and great variety of things growing there.
