Amazing Andrew, how many great tips you pack into a six minute video. Great build content, well edited. :) Thanks for creating such a wonderful library.
This is a great example of why I subbed your channel ages ago Andrew. I loved watching you make that CA and balsa fuselage and tail boom. Thumbs up man!
Fantastic build! Thanks for that great idea with the plummingpipe for connecting the tailboom. Never thought of that! The handtoss showed how great build this is! I'm thinking that you maybe have built it a bit to "jucey" and perhaps you could have made it lighter with a smaller motor and battery. It's gliding perfect as is and on a glider, the motor is just for getting up to where the lift starts. Who cares if it takes 1 minute or 5 :-) Keep it up, Andrew! And enjoy the summer :-)
Nicely done Andrew, that's a beauty. You could do with a wider yolk for your folding prop so it folds back fully and a bigger spinner, but other than that you seem to have got it spot on first go. I thought the tail looked a bit small for the wingspan but it looks like I was wrong - there's nothing wrong with that :-)
Should the bottom of the wing be flat? I have a high lifting wing and building a new fuesolodge withers the wing running throught the fuesolodge not rubber band on top
Really enjoyed that especially how you connected the tail boom, clever idea. Have you tried the tissue made from basalt rock yet? Similar but cheaper than carbon...Fyi tv news item last night about merino wool fibre being used in place of fibre glass on surfboards, here in NZ..Thanks Laurie
do you have a vid on your diy incidence meter. brilliant mate lol. if not I'd love to see a video and build one myself. i saw an ad on rcgroups for a commercial one and thought man i could probably make one. great job on the glider also. i always enjoy your content. good day from PA. Dustin
A build again! Did you use balsa or plywood for the motor wall? I would love to see you try micro planes... slope soaring with a 60 cm wing-spam glider.
thanks. I will try to rebuild a plane with your technique, it seems pretty fast and efficient. for the micro plane, I will have to do my own video then! btw, you produce video quite often, how many hours a day (or per week) do you spend on filming and editing?
Filming and editing is part of the build process for me, I do little bits all the time. I film pretty much everything and edit as quickly as possible. No idea how many hours it adds up to sorry.
I was just asking, don't feel sorry. I am interested into the process of Vloging, your posting frequency is quite high and the content is qualitative and consistent too. You are a good story teller, I follow you since your dlg video, it helped me a lot to understand how to fly them. (I just realised you posted 449 videos... damn I watched you as much as I watch game of thrones) and I am kind of hooked on it since then. thanks a lot for the break you give me during the work, I envy your soaring hills, I wish I could fly like that. I do play them time to time to relax a bit.....
como siempre un buen video Sr newton muchas gracias por compartir, sólo una pregunta, podría usted darnos las medidas de este avión o algún plano. muchas gracias
The centre section has an aluminium tube to accept the Phoenix wing joiner/spars, and it has 6mm x 1mm CF strips edge on glued into slots top and bottom.
Nice "Old School " balsa fuse i like the way the build went and reasonably light all up weight of 1600 g thanks great vid and flies great too "cool" success !!
Beautiful glider, nice design, simply spectacular. And it flies a lot! Health and success in projects!Lindo planador, projeto bem bacana, simplesmente espetacular. E voa muito! Saúde e sucesso nos projetos!
Great video as always Andrew! What size (roughly) are the tail feathers on this and roughly how long is the boom between the tail feathers and the back of the fus?
Amazing !!! i want to start to use balsa too LOL !!! just two question, the firewall motor mount is in balsa also ? is not fragile ? and the wood that support the wing and tail is this plywood ? I just maiden the Phoenix 1600 last monday ! is lovely !!! all the very best regards !! cheers !!
Great stuff, though personally I make minimum use of balsa and my local model shop has closed down. So I probably won't be buying any more. How much longer was the new fuselage? About 10cm is my guess.
Andrew Newton great video. what a beauty! can i ask your advice.. what would you reccomend as a next step after my bixler.. a Pheonix 2k or Pheonix Evoloution? (or radian, etc) would like to do a nice fpv soarer

Nice build, having flying skills is good but having the skills to build what you fly is a whole nother level.
Double the fun, and crashes don't matter
Man, that PVC trick did not go unnoticed! I could use that for many jobs, thanks.
One of the most versatile materials, you will never look at the plumbing section of a hardware store the same
Flights very good and calm. What is the diameter of CF tube?
16mm woven tube 1mm wall
That pvc tailboomholder is a pretty smart idea...! Will try it out on one of my future builds
Go for it!
Amazing Andrew, how many great tips you pack into a six minute video. Great build content, well edited. :)
Thanks for creating such a wonderful library.
What a great build. She's a big one but looks graceful in the air. Love to see it preform on a nice summers day.
Good job!
Thanks man, makes me want to try a proper composite
This is a great example of why I subbed your channel ages ago Andrew. I loved watching you make that CA and balsa fuselage and tail boom. Thumbs up man!
Thank you for the encouragement.
Supercool! that's what model flying is all about. Thumbs up, Andrew!
I would have to make the tail lighter or shorter if the motor and battery were smaller, or lengthen the nose.
Ah, of course. :-)
Man, you make some of the coolest builds.
Thanks Magic
Way Back when IT was a Hobby.. Awesome.
Excellent superb build that looks easy and economical. Flies better than any thing store bought. Great Job - as usual.
Well I save a lot of money, used a wing that was gathering dust, and learned a lot. Perfect outcome
That was really cool too!!! More inspiration to make a Frankenstein plane out of my "dead" ASW 28!!!
Oh I like your thinking. Might do the same with my ASW 28 wings
This gave me a few ideas for some wings I have laying around. Good work!
That plane just floats. Nice build.
You are great, Andrew. Thank you for your contributions. Thanks to your efforts, no rainy day will be boring
Haha, glad you like the videos
Great build! I like the idea of the pvc pipe bracket.
Very versatile and cheap material
In what country is it located? What is the name of this beach?
Nicely done Andrew, that's a beauty. You could do with a wider yolk for your folding prop so it folds back fully and a bigger spinner, but other than that you seem to have got it spot on first go. I thought the tail looked a bit small for the wingspan but it looks like I was wrong - there's nothing wrong with that :-)
I need to come up with a sweeter shape with a tapered nose
2.5mm balsa is ok for this glider ?
Which part of the glider?
@@AndrewNewton fuselage and rudder and elevator
@@rcbuildmaster6192 Should be OK with some tape covering and reinforcement
I really like the heat molded PVC clamp idea...I'll have to add that to my bag of tricks.
Cheers!
It worked well, happy with that idea for prototyping. Allows adjustment of boom length
Great job Andrew. Awesome.
Should the bottom of the wing be flat? I have a high lifting wing and building a new fuesolodge withers the wing running throught the fuesolodge not rubber band on top
With a flat bottomed airfoil you usually need to lift the trailing edge up a few degrees
My 3m wings are made up of 6mm depron with a long steel bar in middle and two short CF rods at front , is it stiff enough to sustain 1864g of AUW
Damn Mr Andrew now I want to buy another phoenix! My all time favourite airframe!
Hehe, it is a remarkable model
i think i like your home builds better than the product ones Andrew! very impressive! :D
Me too
Really enjoyed that especially how you connected the tail boom, clever idea. Have you tried the tissue made from basalt rock yet? Similar but cheaper than carbon...Fyi tv news item last night about merino wool fibre being used in place of fibre glass on surfboards, here in NZ..Thanks Laurie
Merino fibre glass, that is brilliant. Hope it takes off. Cant say I have heard of basalt rock tissue, must investigate
do you have a vid on your diy incidence meter. brilliant mate lol. if not I'd love to see a video and build one myself. i saw an ad on rcgroups for a commercial one and thought man i could probably make one. great job on the glider also. i always enjoy your content.
good day from PA.
Dustin
Can I use 2 3mm balsa for mounting the wing
Needs to be strong, like plywood
@@AndrewNewton I was thinking to cover two layers of 3mm balsa with epoxy which will increase its strength
I see the tail wigling at 5:46, maybe a perforated plywood would be stronger...
A little bit of wiggle is fine.
Wow, beautiful work! I love watching your builds! What is that body of water where you are slope soaring?
Not in this video? It could be Corio Bay or Bass Straight
Hi Andrew,
very nice glider and also a very good video. I've a question: which plug system do you prefere for your lipos?
Regards, Sam
TheGerSam -- XT60
Thanks Earl, yes XT 60 for most and JST for light weight gliders
Andrew Newton thanks
very nice,
I may just build one out of a couple of replacement wing sets.
They are calling to you
Excellent flight.
A build again!
Did you use balsa or plywood for the motor wall?
I would love to see you try micro planes... slope soaring with a 60 cm wing-spam glider.
6mm ply for the firewall. I'm not so good with smaller planes, more accuracy needed.
thanks. I will try to rebuild a plane with your technique, it seems pretty fast and efficient.
for the micro plane, I will have to do my own video then! btw, you produce video quite often, how many hours a day (or per week) do you spend on filming and editing?

I'm still working on the design but when I'm happy with it I'll share plans
👍 Great idea Andrew . Thanks for this great video.
Nicely done!
will that folding prop get hung up on your square fuselage
It didn't, but I have changed to an external motor anyway
Should 5min epoxy work for gluing the fuslage
Yes perfect
You make it look so easy!
Far from perfect, it would be much harder to do it properly
wonderful glides really well
how do you prevent wing flex? what kind of spar do you use
I've done a bit more tidying up now and it looks sweeter.
can you please show the motormount , I've had many problems with that
Its boxed in and hidden at the moment, but I'll do more with this in the future
Andrew Newton perfect , thanks
what is the dimension. I'm thinking of building one. it is cool
I'll do a measurement video soon
Is the balsa wood rod is good for spar of the 3m deprron wing ?
Not strong enough for 3m, you would need fibreglass, or carbon fibre, or edge-on plywood for enough strength
Nice build Andrew!
Hello friend, this video has been going on for some time, but if you can share the fuselage size and the total length please
Dimensions video ua-cam.com/video/7OuQGB1MxtA/v-deo.html
Very nice,,Andrew
Beautiful glider, nice design, simply spectacular. And it flies a lot! Health and success in projects!Lindo planador, projeto bem bacana, simplesmente espetacular. E voa muito! Saúde e sucesso nos projetos!
Thanks, can't wait for a nice warm calm day to really test it out.
True, but you already have a flying profile!Verdade, mas já tem perfil de voador!
So I have built the same but it weights around 1840gms , will IT glide nicely ?
Is that wing fixed only by screws on fuselage ?
That's probably too heavy, unless the wings are stiffer than mine. 2 bolts through plywood plate hold the wing to the fuselage
Great video as always Andrew! What size (roughly) are the tail feathers on this and roughly how long is the boom between the tail feathers and the back of the fus?
I'll do a measurement video soon
Excellent!
such beautiful Birth of glider !!!!! You are the Master of the skies !!! wooohooooo !
Haha, thanks It actually works well. Looks ugly
Hello. How do you determine the angle of incidence?
Trial and error mainly. If it's pitching up while gliding then try lifting the trailing edge a little.
Ok so can I make the wing as you guided in the making of 1.5m depron arming wing ?
As long as your spars are stiff enough
@@AndrewNewton ok so you mean spars are the cf rods which are inserted in wing
That was a very satisfying video Andrew, excellent build.👍
Thanks Simon, it worked better than I expected.
Would a 8mm carbon fiber tube work for boom ?
What wall thickness?
@@AndrewNewton 2mm
Are mg90 servo reliable for these type of gliders
Yes they are quite OK I have found.
Do you experience sluggish control coz mine one crash due to sluggish controls ?
Twisty wings will reduce aileron control
Very inspiring :) How long is CF tail boom? Did you made measurement video?
Thanks Piotr - ua-cam.com/video/7OuQGB1MxtA/v-deo.html
Thank you! I couldn't find. I ask for more gliders related video :-)
Gliders are my favourite, so I promise to make more related videos
Have you made any plan or digram or dimensions for this on a sheet ?
No plans, just this video
Amazing !!! i want to start to use balsa too LOL !!! just two question, the firewall motor mount is in balsa also ? is not fragile ? and the wood that support the wing and tail is this plywood ?
I just maiden the Phoenix 1600 last monday ! is lovely !!!

Plywood firewall and wing support. Balsa is really nice to build with, good luck
Thank's for sharing and for infos bro! have fun !! i love your channel !!!
Wow I am happy that your mods worked for you Andrew, great Vid too, I hope it slopes well for you too. Keep up the good work, Your Channel is great
Thanks Joe
Where I can find the information for the wings?
Other videos on my channel ua-cam.com/video/7vwkMb7TdWs/v-deo.html
Would a 10mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness CF boom work ?
Maybe but it will be heavy. I'm using 16mm with 1mm wall
Great work Andrew :)
It certainly works
yeah it works great :)
Belo projeto Andrew...Vou tentar construir um similar a esse. Parabéns : )
Excellent, highly recommended and good luck
Thank you builder, good Christmas and a happy 2018 to you and the whole family, with great health and high flying embrace!
Is 2212 1400kv with folding propeller 10x6 realiable for your glider?
This big one needs more power than 2212
@@AndrewNewton so then 2826 is ok ?
Great stuff, though personally I make minimum use of balsa and my local model shop has closed down. So I probably won't be buying any more. How much longer was the new fuselage? About 10cm is my guess.
Horizontal stab is in the same spot but bigger, Vertical stab is 180mm further back and bigger.
I was just thinking that the Phoenix tail feathers are pretty small for a 3M span.
Like Goldilocks. The P2K rudder is way too small, the Ph Evolution rudder was bigger but still too short, this one is perfect.
Andrew Newton great video. what a beauty! can i ask your advice.. what would you reccomend as a next step after my bixler.. a Pheonix 2k or Pheonix Evoloution? (or radian, etc) would like to do a nice fpv soarer

I never understood why gliders had airbrakes until I flew one. Holy moly, the times I've crashed from an overshot landing...
