  • @he-mansuncle7661

    Amazing job!!! The final clear coat makes a huge difference in all of the details and figure of the different colors in resin.
    If you don't have the power tools to make a base for the geode, you can easily make one for pretty cheap!
    All You need is a silicone mat/art mats/the mats that have the grids on them(not sure what they're called). You may want to get a spray on mold release if your mat is older. Just spray and let it dry completely.
    And silicone and a caulking gun. You can get the liquid nails brand (100% silicone) and with the caulk gun, cut a decent size of the tip of the silicone caulking and then make your geode shape. Just let the silicone dry(will vary on how thick you want your geode to be. If you're wanting a thick geode, build up your layers of silicone until you are satisfied.
    Then you can start playing with resin and all of the different colors you want to use.
    After the resin has cured, you can just remove the silicone away from the mat and art.
    You can get a couple of pours out of your silicone "geode shaped wall(s)".

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 років тому +1

      That is such an awesome suggestion, I hadn't thought of that! Thanks for sharing 😁

    • @he-mansuncle7661
      @he-mansuncle7661 5 років тому

      EvanAndKatelyn No problem! You would also get two different art pieces! As the bottom side will be different from the top.
      Especially if you do some alcohol inks and drop the white alcohol ink over the top of any color besides gold or silver basically lol.
      Also, if you didnt like the way your art looked after the 24 hours, you can remove the tape earlier(when the resin is going into the tacky stage) and the buildup on the edges won't be so hard/raised.
      Great job!!!

      @@EvanAndKatelyn I'm not kidding: I lost my sense of smell about 10 years ago when I built model trees for the adaption of "the gruffalo" using a lot of resin in the process. I collect gems and minerals. I love the big one and the smallest one. Some geodes just have druse in the center and no hole ( druse is teeny tiny almost granules of crystals).... The glitter was sort of good for that....but on a small piece you could even maybe do a white pearlescent regular size glitter....or if there is a size in between. Nice project....All 3 pieces look fantastic on the wall together! ❤️

    You crazy kids with your myface and your fake geological artifacts. Back in my day we didn't have fancy geode art to hang on the walls. We just had potatoes and we were darn happy to have em. Those came out sooo cool! I wonder what it would look like if you glued the mdf to the top of a tupperware bowl or something and covered the bowl part in sand and rocky crust to make it look like an actual geode rather than a slice.

      Before the vid got more than a minute or so in, I was thinking concrete shell (yeah, coarse/sandy outside would be awesome) and doing it on something so that there is not backing board to have a bit of translucence.

    • @lilbohbeat5785
      @lilbohbeat5785 5 років тому +2

      Roy Nielsen yes! Concrete shell with an LED or 2.. (or 30) in it, topped by a plexiglass-backed resin geode like these! That way the lights can shine through, like one of those crystal/geode lamps! And the concrete outer-“rock” from the concrete shell will also allow it to balance however you choose, so it can function as a table top lamp or wtv

    These are GORGEOUS! The only suggestion I could make would be to put some black cloth on the back of the geode with the crystals in the middle. Like the work you have been doing with the epoxy, I've picked up some good tips for my 1st pour. Quick Tip: I have a CNC and hated cleaning up the tabs but not anymore. I just use a flush trim bit to clean the tabs back to the edge of the part! No more filing or sanding!

      I mean this goes in hand with using non-low emitting mdf... As they huff in all the off gassing. So... It's pretty an all but then 100s of viewers start creating this and leaving environmentally toxic waste. Also hope they used UV stabilizers since it's hung right next to a window. (Yellowing alert)

    Okay, guys...I have been working with resin for awhile now and this is the BEST video I have found on how to make geodes! It is so awesome that you provided links for where to purchase the supplies.
    One favor tho - could you give specific links for the blue and black you used for the midnight blue? And, maybe even the approximate proportions you used of each color?
    Thanks so much!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn

      Thank you so much! To make the midnight blue, we used this blue: amzn.to/2RvDVfu and this black: amzn.to/2Rw2TLC I don't remember the exact proportions since we were kinda winging it!

    If you tape the back with blue tape it helps the resin not puddle underneath! You guys are so fun! Loved your video! Also it’s ok to torch more to make sure all bubbles have popped! What do you use to cover them while waiting to cure? I’ve tried just about everything and I still will get specks of dust in resin! It can be so frustrating! But your geods look perfect!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 років тому

    You should have painted the edge with lumpy dirty paint...it would have looked like the rock edge.Then your sanded edge would have looked like a cut edge and you wouldn't have sanded that edge. Less work maybe. THAT said...WOW...JUST WOW. So amazing.

      From my experience resin does not like the cold. The expansion is just too great.
      That said, I'd like to see how this looks poured onto plexiglass instead of the board. That way you can put LED lights behind it for accent lighting.
