The soup you had last from the bowl was probably dal (lentil soup). You mix the dal with rice and eat it. Each bite would be dal mixed rice with a little bit of the vegetable curry. Soup part of the Meat/fish curry is also mixed with the rice, and eaten similarly. The sweet sour soup (like apple..) would be chutney. We eat chutney last. Dal in eastern part of India would be watery, in north India (Delhi) would be thick.

That yellow thing was the dal-made of lentils(mung dal/masoor dal)..should mix with the rice...on your thali. The proper way to eat Indian food is with your hands. Only right hand. One by one all the recipes provided on the thali was supposed to mix with the rice and have it. First with the dal and small potato, then the sabji(a dish with mix veggies). Then all the rest of the side dish. That sweet thing was the KHAR(made with fermented banana peels). It is an appetiser. You should start the dish with that first with the rice than the others.
