Thanks for watching! Let me know what you else like to know about this tank! (Nick will be in the comments as well). And don’t forget to visit TankTested.org for more-in the next few days there will be an article about the oysters of the Chesapeake!
I grew up in the Chesapeake Bay area, specifically near VIMS, and tanks like these were very common in my science classrooms growing up. Most times a class would adopt oyster "spit" and we would raise them for a year off a dock and some in the tanks. We would then release them at the end of the year in specific restoration areas. My school also offered trips to "Fox Island" where we would research the bay and spend a week without direct water, plumbing, or electricity. Classrooms often had "Bay Tanks" where we would walk to the river with Lowes' five-gallon buckets and collect fish to bring back to our tank. It's very interesting to me that more people do not have tanks like this.
damn thats cool, i remember going to the marsh near my hometown during elementary and tasting pickleweed or something... its a salty tasting playnt cuz of the brackish water
Lol I remember…! Yes you Sarah Wicker.! And what was not common knowledge within SPit, is when/after being released, some of us would take some home and with some lemon/lime and salt/pepper… oh nvm… great time.
I have a 55 gallon with bay fish in it, although not nearly as well scaped. My favorite part is the anemones in it. As far as i know they're the only anemones that can tolerate near freshwater, we need more of then in the hobby!
Ooh, that's amazing! I'm doing an eclosed ecosystem, and although the system couldn't maintain balance with a salt system, a brackish system would do well and I was looking at clam reefs, but an anemone of any kind would also be incredible. Do you know the species name?
Fantastic! I go to Glen Echo several times a year and never knew this aquarium was so cool. I’ll stop in and support the cause and check out the tank in person. Thanks for sharing this!
This video deserves wayyyyy more sub and awareness. I hate those unethical channels that put fish in a stressful situation (bathtub, small space, etc.) yet get like 600k sub. Your video along with all the hobbyist in your video is amazing! I suggest a fancy goldfish video and how they were being breed to have many species.
This is goals! Newest thing in aquascaping. And for a noble cause of raising awareness. I have a few questions though: 1. Do oysters not change place? You said they are glued 2. Do the crabs not try to catch fish? 3. Do you need brackish water phytoplankton or just anything would do? 4. Please discuss in the next video a bit on how the oysters procreate 5. Also please discuss the ecosystem and interdependence (feeding and spawning) of the inhabitants of the tank Thanks for sharing this beauty.
Working on just that! I love the more educational/conservation side of this hobby so I want to focus more on telling local stories and sharing the ecology of the environment!
Great work Alex and Nick! I've snorkeled a lot of oyster beds and this is exactly what they look like (except this has less algae, mulm, and stray sea grass). Amazing project, I hope to see it in person sometime!
Have to say I’m in love with the simplicity of this tank! No obnoxiously bright unnecessary artificial colors. Very pleasing to the eye. If I were into saltwater this would be a cool tank to own! That and a ginormous Pinnatus batfish in a properly sized and scaped tank. If only I were rich! Now for a question! Will the oysters successfully spawn in the tank? I think it would look awesome if the entire oyster colony was alive!
Awesome tank, I am down south on Galveston Bay, It amazes me how similar we are to Chesapeake bay. In both history and biology. I have a brackish tank as well, All native caught, 1 Frill fin Goby, 1 naked Goby, 1 skillet fish, 1 oyster toadfish.
This is incredible. I spent time there in 2010 and actually discussed bioremediation of the Bay, it's impressive how far it has come since trying to clean it up. Whoa im speechless that someone was mindful enough to use the time and resources to create this awesome display. I always love seeing cold water fishtanks. Id love to do a Puget Sound Marsh tank, however we have eel grass and deep deep mud flats so im curious how that would work out. Thanks Alex. You'll love the Seattle Aquarium's kelp forest 30 foot tall tank, let me know if you're in need of a ride or site seeing guide for AGA. Peace
Live in the Chesapeake bay region and I’ve seen many estuaries first hand and i just have to say this aquascape this a perfect representation of the habitat
Great video Alex, keep up the amazing work! For the next video: would be interesting to hear more from Nick about the nuts and bolts of setup/maintenance for the tank(s).
Awesome!! 👍I love North American native tanks! The salt/brackish ones are especially cool since you don't see them much. I've kept several freshwater natives such as sunfish, catfish, shiners, white perch, and last but definitely not least a Bass. The bass was awesome, just got too big. Now I'm thinking about putting some shiners/minnows in my 20 with the goldfish, rosy red minnows, and pictus cat. Currently I only have two native fish. A white perch and a shiner, both in my fish pond.
Hi. I love such projects as you can see from my channel. Thank you very much for sharing this unique eco system with us. There is so much to explore in the waters around us...
Thanks Alex for showing us this unique scape. I am embarrassed how little I know about the oyster and it's habits apart from how good they taste with lemon and cocktail sauce :-). I look forward to seeing part 2 because I was kind of confused about whether all the oysters were live or not.
What caught my attention were the banded killifish. Because i have a small school of them in my freshwater tank that I caught off the beach in the east coast of canada.
I'm doing the same thing on a much smaller scale for the Texas coast. We have a lot of oyster reefs too. I'd like more info on how much and how often they feed the phyto. There's not a lot of info on it online
Mummychog are super underrated. They can tolerate a huge range on salinity and terrible water conditions. I caught one that had a bright red belly and cyan flank. Never seen one like it, wish i kept and bred it lol.
Ok thanks. I'm in Hampstead, so I'd be more towards to tributary end like Patapsco or Susquehanna. I've considered a blue channel crab but fear it would kill all my other fish.
Thanks for watching! Let me know what you else like to know about this tank! (Nick will be in the comments as well). And don’t forget to visit TankTested.org for more-in the next few days there will be an article about the oysters of the Chesapeake!
Link to part 2?
This was really incredible. The system he's built and the re-created eco-system are a rare treat we hobbyists don't usually see. Thanks Alex!

I as also grew up near the Chesapeake of bay
Man, my science class is boring.
@@sardonicsardonyx359 ikr- I wish I lived near the bay...

This one is really neat. #savethebay Look forward to seeing how he built it
Yessss! We need to raise awareness about the Chesapeake! Thanks for making this!
Raising awareness about the Chesapeake is our main mission at the Glen Echo Park Aquarium
I grew up on the west coast, while things are different on either coast an estuary aquarium is a huge rarity and a treat to see. Incredible tank!!
Blazingly awesome! He’s a real artist. A true labor of love. I’m thankful you allowed us all to see this.
I have a 55 gallon with bay fish in it, although not nearly as well scaped. My favorite part is the anemones in it. As far as i know they're the only anemones that can tolerate near freshwater, we need more of then in the hobby!
That's great. We have some ghost anemones in another tank that are nearly 3 inches long.
what type of amenomes are they? amazing! didnt no any could tolerate fresh ish water
Do you have a video of your tank that would be very cool to see.😊
Ooh, that's amazing! I'm doing an eclosed ecosystem, and although the system couldn't maintain balance with a salt system, a brackish system would do well and I was looking at clam reefs, but an anemone of any kind would also be incredible. Do you know the species name?
@@jbrown3364 I second this, a species name, or even common name would be a godsend
Fantastic! I go to Glen Echo several times a year and never knew this aquarium was so cool. I’ll stop in and support the cause and check out the tank in person. Thanks for sharing this!

Damn, this made me really emotional. Your dedication and love for this environment is obvious. This is very impressive.
One of the best tanks I have ever seen. I have wanted to do an oyster tank for years. Great job!
This was beautifully presented, looks like such an awesome tank!
Historical aquascapes are such an interesting and rewarding concept, it has become one of my favorites in just a few minutes lol

Beautifully designed,simple and stunning
Wow wow wow wowww!!! Beautiful and close replica of the Chesapeake bay! Great job!!!
Amazing. I'm feeling inspired to be more creative with aquariums after watching this!
I loved this video so, so much. This tank + the way it educates is extraordinary + powerful. I’d love to see more localized tanks like this!
Working on just that! I love the more educational/conservation side of this hobby so I want to focus more on telling local stories and sharing the ecology of the environment!
I work at glen echo park every Saturday, this is absolutely the next place I’ll be spending my break
Great work Alex and Nick! I've snorkeled a lot of oyster beds and this is exactly what they look like (except this has less algae, mulm, and stray sea grass). Amazing project, I hope to see it in person sometime!
I love tanks like this....invert centered, or interesting biome snippets are underrepresented!

Probably the best filtered aquarium in the world
i got no questions, but this aquarium is incredible!
this makes me so incredibly happy.
Your voice is so soothing and great to listen to. Thanks for posting this

Best video yet! Simply an amazing tank. I was blown away! Thank you, Mike & Nick.
That’s a wonderful tank with a great message within it
Beautiful tank. This is exactly what I want to have one day.
this is a really nice tank replicating nature

Just wow, such a genius tank! Thank you so much for this video Alex, merry christmas!
Wow, those shell make me imagine about a throne of skull and bone. Fantastic
Live in the Chesapeake bay region and I’ve seen many estuaries first hand and i just have to say this aquascape this a perfect representation of the habitat
Nice aquarium, very inspiring.
wow, that's one of the prettiest tanks ive seen. This is making me want to attempt a similar setup lol
Unique, lovely tank , thank you for sharing 👍
SO FREAKING AMAZING!!
Excellent display very creative
Really cool tank. And I loved the labels and diagrams you put in the video as well!
Another awesome video Alex! Thank you for sharing this tank with us! Nick, you are an amazing aquarist! I love your work!
Alex, your work is always world class. Thank you for this amazing story.
great aquarium man. keep the awareness going
excellent tank and hell of an oyster reef great job!
Loved this video, would like more of this style!
Gorgeous and excellent video
Wow very interesting... never saw a oyster tank before ... very nice ... peace out
this in amazing, and the only video i have seen recently with 0 dislike, may this stays the same
Also I would suggest feeding artemia nauplii or baby brine shrimp, easy to cultivate and fish go nuts for them.
This is fantastic! Beautiful tank and as always, superb camera work.
Very interesting and informative. It's a shame how we have taken our environment for granted. Excellent work from you both.
Great video Alex, keep up the amazing work!

Dear Alex, this is quite surprising! Thank you and I can't wait to see your next video ... Have a happy Xmas!
Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hope you have a wonderful holiday season! 🎄🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁🎉🎉🎉🎅🎅🎅🦌
Simply awesome!
what an amazing project to give awarness!
I just came here from binge watching creepy videos, and this kinda helps as i feel haunted, really cool aquarium!!
That’s a very neat and useful tank
Wow! Simply amazing!
Brilliant fishtank.
So beautiful and unique! I love the fish, just amazing to see thank you!
Never seen a tank like this, very interesting and amazing. Well done!
Fantastic -as simple as that .👍🇬🇧
That is a wicked awesome tank.
What caught my attention were the banded killifish. Because i have a small school of them in my freshwater tank that I caught off the beach in the east coast of canada.
Or if they’re all just mummichogs, they’re very similar species.
Great job!
What a beautiful and interesting video. Ty
It’s time for a wake up call. We need to protect and restore the bay’s health.
Interesting, where is the other video you were talking about? 😊
Oh geez, that's not far from where I live! How have I never been??? I gotta go!!!
nice ecosystem you got there
Thank you I learned a lot

sooo so lovely
Saved this one for last (Viewing wise). You create great content.
Nice job!

Such an interesting tank👍🏻 great video again Alex
Great video
Lovely tank, nice and unique, I am subscribed!
Amazing 👍👍👍
Superb 🤩
Happy Holidays to you and yours! Tank tested. Fish approved.
what kind of phytoplankton do you feed your oyster? How do you dose calcium, alkalinity, etc?
Awesome .Thanks.
Str8 fire great show
Fabulous I would love to make one of the elementary schools in Beacon, Ny
Really different! Great production bud, earnt yourself another sub 👍
How does he keep them alive? Is there any dosing or feeding requirements?
Hi. Any idea where to find a brackish anemone, for example the Beadlet Anemone?
that§s one awesome tank
Top shelf! I love brackish tanks and live near the top of the Chesapeake Bay. I've considered going collecting.
These fish were collected in Kent Island
Ok thanks. I'm in Hampstead, so I'd be more towards to tributary end like Patapsco or Susquehanna. I've considered a blue channel crab but fear it would kill all my other fish.
