    Been doing this for years on my 4Runner, GX, and LX. Tip: you don't need to refill from the transmission fill hole under the car. Disconnect transmission cooler outlet. Connect clear tubing from the transmission cooler outlet to a graduated bucket so you know how much comes out. Connect a separate clear tubing to the other end where the transmission cooler outlet is connected to go back to the transmission. This is where you refill the xmsn fluid using a hand/automatic pump. Start engine and let out 2 to 3 qt of old xmsn fluid into graduated bucket. Pump the same amount of new xmsn fluid back in. Repeat until all 14 to 16 qt of old xmsn fluid (black/dark red) is replaced with new fluid (vibrant red/magenta). The transmission filter and pan drop is not necessary until every 100k to 120k. Total time should take no longer than 1 hr. I have been doing this every 60k with either Toyota WS or Valvoline Maxlife ATF. Don't buy into the lifetime fluid speech from corporate. You'll destroy/damage your transmission if you don't change out the xmsn fluid.

      Wow, thanks for that. I have no idea how it looks like inside the transmission from the trans cooler outlet end, so kind of worrying about damaging the transmission if I pump the fluid in from there without transmission running. Good to know that also works.
      The pan drop is just to replace all the pan bolts before any of the bolts get rusty and broken when I need to drop the pan. Living in the rust belt, and the transmission pan bolts have a really bad reputation of easily broken, definitely don't want that to happen to me.
      And agreed. I also don't believe any moving auto part could last forever, so changing the fluid regularly or has the transmission changed along with the fluid, that's an easy answer. Thanks for sharing these.

      @runnerxa Is your 4runner a 5th Gen? You really don't need to unplug the bottom drain bolt to see if it's overfilled?

    • @runnerxa
      @runnerxa 8 місяців тому

      @@MoeGoe-xt3enI have a GX470 which shares the same sealed A750F 5 speed transmission as the 5th gen 4Runner. You do not if you take out the same amount as you fill back in, hence you buy a transparent graduated bucket from HomeDepot/Lowe's. There are plenty of A750F, AB60F transmission fluid exchange writeup on IH8MUD and other forums. The A750F and AB60F are known to run for a long time if you change out the fluids every 60k (do not buy into the lifetime fluid BS). The ones with transmission issues are typically ones that have neglected transmission fluid change intervals.

      @@runnerxa Good to know. Thanks. Also do you think it's a bad idea Toyota used the same transmission in a 5th Gen 4runner V6 as they did in the GX V8? Or is it equally reliable handling that much power?

    • @runnerxa
      @runnerxa 8 місяців тому

      @@MoeGoe-xt3enWhat power? Neither the 1GR-FE V6 nor the 2UZ-FE V8 were known to be powerhouse engines. The GX470 and 4th gen V8 4Runner came out in 2003. That means the A750F (and the minor revisions) have been in used since 2003. The 5th gen 4Runner came out in 2010 using similar powertrain as the 2005+ 4th gen V6 4Runner minus the multi-mode 4WD/full time 4WD feature (that is only available in the 5th gen 4Runner Limited 4WD). The same A750F transmission is essentially in use from 2003 (2002 in Japan) to 2024... So they are pretty reliable but also pretty old tech, hence it gets the bad rep for fuel economy (15-18mpg). Powerwise, the A750F can handle a supercharged 4.7 V8 2UZ so it can definitely handle the 4.0 V6 dual VVT on the 5th gen 4Runner (even if the V6 is supercharged). Hell, even the old A340F in the 3rd gen 4Runner and 2003/2004 V6 4Runner can handle a supercharger.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this super helpful video.
    I started the process on my '13 yesterday (was only planning on a quick drain and refill), and discovered the drain plug to be waaaay overtightened by the last person to do it (not me!!!) and stripped out.

    Fantastic job. Dealers where I am wouldn't even think about flushing out the fluid in the cooler, takes too much time for them and they don't care lol.

      Actually, if you have the right tools, it should be easy and quick. But it's true that flushing the cooler adds complexity and the extra time that costs might not make the same money for the mechanic in the dealer, so why should they do this.

      I use four 'Rhinoramp', which would give me about 9 inches raise. There will be plenty of room for most of the maintenance. Only issue is, you cannot do any service that requires taking off the wheel.
      The trick is to use 4L drive mode, it made it easy to climb up the ramps.

      I'm not sure about that, all the numbers in my video are from GX460 repair manual book. If you are not sure which number to trust for fluid level check, check my another video which shows you how to do this without monitoring the accurate temperature by using the built-in function. This function won't lie to you and is your GX specific.

    I did not take out the whole pan, and just remove the drain plug, as ur video show, to see how much fluid I need to refill back, just keep the overflow drain plug open until the fluid come out, does this work?

    • @felixsun548
      @felixsun548  Рік тому

      keep the overflow drain plug open, refilling ATF until the fluid come out from the overflow drain is only to ensure you put sufficient fluid back in the pan. You will still need to process the fluid level check under certain temperature, otherwise, your transmission could malfunction.

    I drained the Transmission oil on my 2015 GX460 without collecting the used oil. Since I have no way to measure any more, can you tell me how many quarts to add after draining from the drain plug (not the overflow pulg)?

    • @felixsun548
      @felixsun548  10 місяців тому

      Put the drain plug back and remove overflow plug and leave it open. add oil until oil come from overflow hole, put the overflow plug back on and start oil level adjustment.
      If you just want to refill without perform the level adjustment, it's a bad idea because there is no way to tell how much oil you drained. The service book states a "drain and refill" requires 3.2 US qts, but the number would definitely be different from the amount you drained. Oil level adjustment is recommended, otherwise you are on your own risk.

    Hello. How many liters of oil are needed for this procedure?

    • @felixsun548
      @felixsun548  10 місяців тому

      Service book states 3.0 liters (3.2 US qts) for "Drain and refill", and 11.1 liters (11.7 US qts) for "Dry fill".
      The oil is cheap and returnable if not opened, so I prepared 12 US qts for the entire flushing procedure. Not sure how much it's needed for a simple "drain and refill". I'd suggest to prepare more and return unopened bottles later.

      I use this tool: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098LF38DS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      It's quite pricy, but overall it's a pretty powerful tool at this price and comes with a good number of additional functions to customize the car. For example, it allows you to program new keys which I haven't gotten chance to try (hopefully I never need to use this feature).
      I don't sell tool, but I'd say a good tool is a good investment if you work on your car(s) from time to time. Otherwise, there are other options cost less than $100 if you just need to monitor the fluid temperature. I also posted a link to show how to check the temperature without a tool.

    • @felixsun548
      @felixsun548  2 роки тому +2

      Well, some Lexus dealer websites recommend to do it every 30k (for the money in your pocket), but the maintenance book and most Toyota/Lexus forums suggest 60k or 6 years. So unless you know you had done some seriously heavy push on your transmission or it has been 6 years since you bought the gx, leave it as is. IMO, changing/flushing the transmission fluid is just to prevent changing the transmission along with the fluid, but not to keep the fluid always looking good. Plus the complicated procedures adding risk in damaging your tranny if not done right.

      Sorry buddy, I'm not a mechanic. Your 4r has way more mileage than the recommended change interval that I've heard. The 2015 4r should also have the transmission oil pump which would create high pressure, and it is said the tranny may fail after a flush for a high mileage tranny with a pump if it has never had the fluid changed before. So do some research before you start, maybe a regular “draining and filling" is better for your case, but there is a topic which might help: canadiangearhead.com/transmission-fluid

    How many qt oil do we need?

    • @felixsun548
      @felixsun548  2 роки тому

      I cannot tell you an accurate number because I didn't measure, but the repair manual does say that it requires 1.8 qts for draining the pan, and 4.5 qts for removing the valve body.
      In practice, I used in total 12 qts to do the entire flush until all oil turned fresh red. There were 3 drain-and-refill for the transmission oil cooler flush, 2 qts for each refill so that's 6 qts, and 1 addition quart at the end to make sure there was enough oil before level check. So I would say, 5-6 qts to be safe if you replace the oil filter, and at least 3 qts for a simple drain and refill oil replacement. The transmission fluid only costs $9.2/qt from a Toyota dealer, so it won't cost much to be well prepared. Good luck.
