The Farcroft, I remember my dad sitting me in the car with crisps and a drink while he went in. We lived in Antrobus Road opposite and I'd sometimes go to the newsagents in Rookery Road to buy comics.

Looks just like Washwood Heath, Alum Rock, Bordesley Green, Cov Road Small Heath with all the rubbish scattered about the place. I work all over Birmingham and even Druids Heath, Erdington, Weoley Castle is no where near as bad as this.
If my street or town high street looked that bad I'd hire a skip and clean it up entirely by myself, then maybe even try get lucky by sending the bill to the council lol

I was there in 1991 to 1992 at the university halls of residence in Handsworth Wood then with aston university, rookery Rd was frequented for the shops and take away which there was only one then, a fish and chip shop, it was mostly Indian and carribean people then, it was a safer and cleaner place then I would say

Rookery Road is a whole different place than when I knew it in the 1940s and 1950s, from my happy childhood days the model railway shop has gone, it's now CLS Computers, a lot of other places have closed completely, or are now rubbish tips. The Sikh Temple you filmed used to be The Regal Cinema then in the 1960's became a Dance Hall. What an unbelievable different world from those innocent happy days.

A couple of days ago I was in the 11C bus en route to a filming spot when it drove pass Rookery Rd. I was sitting on the 1st floor of the bus and witnessed something horrific taking place on that road. I don't think I will ever forget that... So I believe you when you refer the 60s as "innocent happy days" 😳

I loved walking around here, there was a joke shop at the far end of Rookery road in the direction of Oxhill Road that I would go to. I also walked down the cut through by that primary school which led onto Laurel Road and the gullies. The place is dangerous now and very unwelcoming...

Wonderful! Half an hour well spent! My youth revisited. Rookery Road was our access to Soho Road from Handsworth Wood. It was where all the action was in the 1960's.(coffee bars, snooker hall, young ladies etc ) I notice that The Farcroft Hotel still exists. There were some memorable nights there as well.

It's been about 16-18 years since I last took a walk down this road and it looks like some of what would have been Soho Road businesses have spilled onto Rookery Road.
22.35, that was where Mr Burns's lived, the caretaker of Rookery Infants and Junior school as it was called back when I was attending in the 80s/90s.

Again characterful houses, schools and churches. Beautiful Victorian architecture. But littering is an offence to the environment, the city and the neighbourhood. Where are the police? Local's lack of pride speaks for itself. Welcoming, open minded Birmingham does not deserve this. THX

Me and my family lived in Farnham Road, after the War and left in 1950, for the West Country. We walked with mom up the Rookery road, and down Soho many times. My brother and I attended the Catholic School at the top of the road, and was scared stiff by the Hooded Nuns. Rookery Road Cinema for kids ,on a Saturday morning. was our only treat. We'd pour out after the show, , yelling and pretending to be Batman or Hoppalong Cassidy. I was looking for Side Street names for a positive ID, but I guess they are set furthe back now. I'm 81 now, and all my family have passed on.

Handsworth is a Multi-Cultural Paradise consisting of a vast array of restaurants and coffee shops and halal meat stores.
Outdoor cafés and restaurants can be found along the streets. Eat + Drink all day & night.
Police generally ignore the area; feel free to enjoy the occasional shooting & stabbing.
Shopping Maps for Handsworth cost 2 ruppee.
The famous shopping district is home to 'Ted Baker' & 'Karen Millen' & 'Primark' stores.
The streets are covered with litter and dog waste.
Don't forget to take photos of this beautiful part of Brum.
Don't forget to visit the 'Turd Shop' at 3:30 minutes into the video.

As a child in the 50's and 60's if I had to walk down Rookery Road I was always terrified because it meant I was on my way with my mother to the dentist.
