Why Lawn Renovations NEED This Reel Mower?? // Westies, Backyard Update, Swardman Electra

  • When I bought this greenworks push reel mower used last year I didn't realize how much I was going to enjoy using it and also how much it would be an essential part of my lawn renovation mows going forward. The first few mows of a new lawn (and especially one that you want to stay flat) can be aided so much by a light reel mower like this that cuts cleanly but also leaves your ground flat. In this video I also talk about our beloved Westies, an update on the backyard being mowed slightly lower, watering with my diy system, and an early morning mow with the Swardman Electra.

    Ryan, looking at your reel mower reminded me of when I had lawn cutting jobs at age 14. I bought a reel adjustable mower from Sears that cost $57.00. Had an adjustable knob in the middle front that would raise or lower the wheels, thus the blades. I once got it sharpened from a professional, and he makes these type adjustments to the blades that touch the lower bar. It's where the blades of grass get caught between the cutting blades, and flat bottom bar. He adjusts to the point where when he put a piece of newsprint in between, the tolerances are such that the blades take off the ink, but doesn't cut the newspaper.

    I'd suggest looking into some quick connects for your hoses and sprinklers. It makes changing them out super fast.

    • @luckyb3859
      @luckyb3859 5 років тому

      Yep, I have quick connects on every piece!
      I also have a short leader hose to move the timer away from the bib, and Y-connector with on/off switches to attach the irrigation unit. The Y has a quick connect input, a quick connect output, and a threaded output.
      The switched Y allows me to run the water out the threaded connection and soften the turf to insert the impulse spike into hard turf. I can turn off the water flow while out at the hose end, switch sprinkler type, or adjust the pattern without going back to the bib or timer to turn off the water and then return to the bib to turn on the water. An on/off switch at the hose end saves me steps!
      The thread connection is there if necessary, and I don't need to remove the quick connect on the bib or hose end.

    Ryan, I noticed your cleaning of your lawn mower after cutting... do you performance this maintenance with all of your machines after every cut according to the different areas of grass? The reason why I ask is my front lawn was once weed free and I usually cut it first then immediately cut the back. One weekend I cut in reverse, first the back then the front (the backyard is my renovation project with weed content). And wouldn't you know it, I started seeing weeds in the front. I also do not catch the clippings when I cut. Should I be washing down the underside of my lawn mower before I cut the different areas? Should I go back to bagging?

    I have a fiskers stay sharp plus and I love it. My only issues is the width. If it was 21/22" it would be perfect. 18" is a bit too narrow.
    Also been cutting at second lowest setting( 1.5" maybe. Lowest is 1") and it's been fine all summer. Haven't done anything other then one application of fertilizer. My area is southern Ontario so it shouldn't be too far off yours.

Something to do during the fall growth push. Would you suggest getting started with a hand-op reel like the one you use in this video, working down from highest to desired cut height every day? Also, we were STOKED to see our sticker in the shed! Cheers from MN!

    How long does it take to mow with a manual reel mower? I’m really tempted to get one but I have 10,000 sq ft. Maybe I’ll just do my front lawn which is only 6,000. I just don’t want to spend half a day mowing if I’m going to be maintaining a low height of cut under 2 inches I’ll have to do it 2 or 3 times a week. Right now it takes me about 1.5 hrs to do my lawn with a 21” Honda. I know these manual reel mowers come in 16-20” versions. Larger one of 18 or 20” is probably the way to go for how much grass I have to cut. What do you think, could I do that much grass in a reasonable amount of time?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  5 років тому +1

    Awww the puppers, I love the pups! My dogs kind of rule the back yard lol. I’m really interested to see how that section in the back does compared with a rotary cut side by side. I’m tempted to get one now that I’m renovating my front lawn. I’d like to start mowing around an inch or 1.5 on my kbg. Starting with my Honda though since it’s what I have. Hopefully it does alright at that height for now. So how long does the manual reel mower take for you? I have 6k sq ft in the front and 4.4k in the back I’m worried that it would take me forever to mow that without an engine lol.

    What do you do about the Pythium? I noticed those webs on my lawn earlier this year! It seems to have gone away as far as I can see but that is perhaps because there is less dew at this time of year. Any tips appritiated. :) Thanks for the great channel!

      Could also be dollar spot showing up but either way....let it ride and see what happens or fork over some cash for fungicide. The fungicide for pythium is about $150 for a 32 oz bottle.

    Ryan, have you been treating the fungus or did you use any preventative products before you got it?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      I was using preventative for a while earlier in the summer. It didn't really make a huge difference so knowing it's close to fall now, I'm just riding it out.

    Hey man what’s the plan with the pythium blight besides getting away from the rye. Same problems over here in OMA. Seems to leave the KBG alone but man it has gotten after the rye. Probably not gonna do much about it this year but thinking about starting early next year with mefanoxam, just not sure I want drop the coin on that for a small yard. Curious if that is that what you were thinking about when you mentioned a fungicide in your earlier video?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  5 років тому

      Yeah the rye is susceptible and it has been had this year. I've got that plus some brown patch and a multitude of things going so I did end up dropping coin on mefenoxam and will be spraying that tomorrow.

    I really wish there was a way to not get the washboarding ripple effect you get with Manual reel mowers, even those with 7 blades seem to have it just by the nature of how slow they rotate.
    It would make my life way easier if I could use one of them.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      It depends if you want to do a reapply to make sure you got everything or not. Otherwise technically it can be seeded right away but a few days is fine
