This is probably the best lesson I've seen for describing the use of transparent vs opaque paints. The uses if the transparencies and paper were perfect to show the relationships and results. Thanks.
You are my new Hero!! Thanks to you, my Dutch Pours are sooo much better. The Blow dryer video ( Starting about 10" above & then at about a slight angle). What a difference. ALSO, the Paint to medium ratio video was another MAJOR help. Your have helped me immensely!! THANK YOU for all your easy to follow "training" videos
Thanks Andrew. I really appreciate the comment. I do try to answer my question in way that I would understand and I am glad it helps other people out there too.
I agree with every word of that! The thought & effort you put into all this, saves rest of us from learning it all the hard way & teaches us so much ~ saving us paint, etc AND frustration too! You're very much appreciated & a good teacher. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. It helps others as well as myself to understand and try to prevent costly mistakes. It's not as easy as everyone makes it look. But I can say painting/learning how to paint is one of the best antidepressants on today's market. It really helps me pull myself into a more relaxed, positive mindset. I'm yet learning to get exact consistency for each color. Again🎉🎉🎉
This is GOLD! Thank you so much for all these insights! Now I understand why most pouring artists first lay down a liquid semi-opaque white base before pouring
Thank you David. I've learned more from you in three videos than from all the pouring artists I've seen. And I've seen hours. As a writer, I appreciate your attention to detail and linear thinking.
Your methods and explanations, especially using the sheets of plastic and paper, are awesome! Thank you for your experimentation. With a little more viewing, I will leap into this process with a full basket of ideas...
Wow, I never really understood the relationship between opaque and transparent paints. I want to watch this video again, just to reiterate everything you said! You explained the process of layering colors so perfectly!! Thank you so much for this!! ❤
WOW David - so well done and understandable especially with the additional visual aids! I have heard pouring artists discuss opaque versus transparent colors - but the way you analyzed and explained makes total sense - why it can get darker than you want! Excellent job - thank you!
I had forgotten how much that affects ultramarine blue until these dried so i added that last little bit at the last minute. Glad it was helpful Marna.
I can't believe you're sharing so much useful information with us for free on this channel! Thank you! You could run a painting class and sell your knowledge 😄
To me this is the most complicated video you ever made, as maybe I don’t exactly use my brain very often in choosing the colors. I take care to not have mud, and so far it works. More, on many of my paints I can’t see if it’s opaque or transparent on the bottle or other recipient. Funny thing is, that it always shows when it’s a semi transparent color. I realized not so long ago, that opaque colors overrule other colors, so I only use bits of it. I’ll come back to watch this video again later, as I want to understand how it really works. As always, so great video, thank you for your searching and explanations 🌺
David, you are such a good teacher. Using colored acetates really drove the point home. Thank you for all the time, effort and money you spend on these videos to teach us! I really appreciate it. ;)
This is an excellent video. You used perfect examples when you brought out the transparent folders. Thank you for your tutorials I truly appreciate them..
As a left-brain engineer who LOVES to learn, thank you for explaining these concepts. I’m not throwing shade on the artists, only that I do not have the background experience/knowledge that most artists assume their audience has. Therefore, at times, I don’t understand their explanations. 🥰
Wow David the way you explained the difference between open and transparent was amazing. I had been struggling with this concept until you cleared it up. I love how you used visual yo teach. Great job 👏👍
Thanks Lillian. With paints it is definitely a lot more trial and error than black and white do this do that but having a good base of knowledge makes a huge different I think.
Yes, yes, yes!! This is what I need! I'm a little too chaotic with my paint pouring and don't always pay attention to the details, such as how opaque/transparent paints impact the final results. I'll be watching the rest of your videos asap. I've been trying to restart paint pouring after years of distractions that kept me from doing it. I feel like I'm starting over and looking at a lot of muddy results. Thanks again for doing the hard work!!
Thank you SO MUCH for all of the hard work, time & money you put into all of your experiments/videos. I can’t even begin to explain just how much you’ve helped me. I constantly would overthink the process, paints, color schemes, layering... pretty much EVERYTHING hindering me from completing anything & enjoying the experience. Being an analytical mind, being able to reference your videos has been everything to me. You are an amazing teacher, inspiration & have been truly motivational. Once again, thank you David!!
Hi there, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am new to the pouring world so I need all the help I can get. I thought I had lost my creativity but seem to find it again once I started watching these great videos, however I have found it a bit overwhelming with so many artists and so many ways to do things. I have finally stopped watching so many videos and thought I would start with the beginners one. I used to paint all the time for my own enjoyment but lost interest these past few years with the covid stuff and bad knees, pain sure takes the joy out of any activities. So glad I found youtube. Anyway thank you for explaining things so plainly and make me think about colours. I need to get a colour wheel. So thank you and I plan to watch more of your videos
David, this is really great! Thank you for taking the time to film these experiments. Also, it is refreshing to listen to someone who speaks with such perfect enunciation. I enjoy your work very much.
Haha my mother was a high school English teacher for decades. I got quite a bit of lecturing on how to speak properly. I don't always follow that but it has definitely rubbed off on me.
I love your videos! It i s hilarious to me how you make things seem so obvious and simple. Using the transparencies and paper- absolutely brilliant!! It turned a concept into a visual understanding that I will probably never forget and I thank you - because that’s awesome!
Thank you so much! That was a last second thing I thought of when making the video. Crazy how little things like that help us so much with concepts like color theory.
I'm pouring now for two weeks and this video explains a lot to me! I use cheap paint with way more less pigment than in more expensive paint. So this is why my paintings are drying so dark! Thanks a lot !
Great stuff as always! Another thing to be aware of too are the color biases of certain colors. One might have 5 different types of blues with the blues being biased in different directions. Some blues are biased towards red (warm blues) while others are biased towards green (cool blues). So if you happen to choose a blue biased towards red in a pour that has yellow expecting them to mix together to create hints of green, you may instead end up with muddy results due to the color bias of that particular blue.
So…NOW…..I just need to figure out what to do with the dang colors! I watch SO many pouring artist’ videos and try the techniques they use, and they fail and I scrape, fail and scrape, fail and scrape, etc. I’d think after a year, I’d finally create SOMETHING, ANYTHING that resembled a real painting!
Glad it helped Nancy. I am happy to answer any questions you have. I am always looking for new content ideas and questions are a great way to get those ideas.
This is what I tried to say in my last comment, one week ago. The brown on the blue looks dark and the cells will not be clearly seen. The combination of layers is very important in the final result. Thank you for this video.
Thank you a million times. I now understand how opaque and transparent paints work. Your explanation was clear, interesting and so informative. You are awesome. I have subscribed.
WOW!!!!!!!!!! You are a fabulous teacher!!!!!!!! I have learnt so much. You have given me more confidence to keep going and learning. Julie form Australia😍
Just did a pour today & my white, black were opaque but my gold was not or my red so the black & white took over (mixed into strange spots of grey) & red disappeared along with the gold & tested them with a black line & very few are truly opaque & then add your pouring medium (just was to thin) but good learning lesson & it does make a difference if opaque or transparent! Exactly got grey! Ty!!
Thank you as had heard about opacity & transparent colors in acrylics but choose the two colors most opaque usually & they just took over the red & gold 😳!
HE L L OOO David. Always wonderful to have you in my paint room, aka, laundry room 🤣. A wonderful tutorial, all areas of translucency and opacity were covered. I have been doing this for about a year and must say I sometimes, still come up with this 😳. Very much appreciate you and ALL you come up with to help us.
I actually did experiments with opaque vs transparent paints with mica powders and found great and better results with transparent paints for mica powders
Definitely. Opaque just eat up up the mica and you don't see them hardly at all. One thing you can do is use very little of an opaque paint and then way more medium. Then you get the color but not as much the opacity.
David thanks for putting this together, I was curious about transparent pants and how they work...Best part was your explanation on best way to layer them...happy pouring right back at you 👍😊
You pack a full college course into 10-20 minutes videos. Thank you for making this style of art accessible. Your are the real mvp
Wow, thank you Gavin. Glad these are helpful.
This is probably the best lesson I've seen for describing the use of transparent vs opaque paints. The uses if the transparencies and paper were perfect to show the relationships and results. Thanks.
You're very welcome Cynthia. That's how my brain works so I figured others would benefit the same.

for me, to understand the basis is the most important to make acrylic pouring and everything is so clear with you!
So glad this is helping Lynda. Happy pouring!
Thank you so much. I am no longer confused about how to layer opaque and transparent paints.
Glad to help my friend.
Best explaination. Have to watch a few times to really understand the lots of Informations. Thank you for sharing and keep coming ❤
I'm glad you found it helpful Shirley.
I hope you are a teacher! Very good job on showing what and why of effects when doing a pour with different variations to the paint. Great job!
I am not but my mother was a High School English teacher for many many years. I blame her for anything that may have rubbed off.
I have learned more from you than anyone. Thanks so much.
