  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are technologies that are being exploited in many different industries. Patents are often sought for new inventions using these technologies, however different jurisdictions assess the patentability of such inventions in different ways that may lead to some stumbling blocks.
Hosted on 17 September 2020, Tim Wilson (Partner - Dehns) discusses the current IP landscape in relation to AI and the criteria for patenting AI inventions.
Tim Wilson is a qualified European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney and a partner at Dehns. He has a degree in mathematics from Oxford University and primarily works in the fields of computer systems, electronics, signal processing, medical technology and mechanical engineering. He acts for clients of all sizes, ranging from individual inventors to multinationals, but has a particular interest in helping small and medium-sized technology companies. He works closely with several start-up companies, not only drafting new patent applications but also providing strategic advice on building and exploiting an effective patent portfolio.
With a strong background in mathematics, he is especially well equipped to handle highly-mathematical inventions in areas such as cryptography, statistics, artificial intelligence and signal processing.
