It’s awesome to see your home state get some recognition for how cool and diverse its fishery is. Truly is a one of a kind place. We need videos like this to spread concern for our depleting habitat due to erosion and storms etc. great video! Come back soon!

The summer before my sophomore year of high school my family moved to Shreveport from Utah. I had always been into fishing but not a bass angler at all. When we got into our new neighborhood right on the southern edge of town I jumped on my bike and started exploring. I found a little bayou creek running under a bridge a few miles down the road and decided to give it a shot. I tied on a gigantic black and purple ribbon tail worm and proceeded to fish it like it was a small snake. I had no idea what I was doing. But by gawd it worked. The first bass I pulled from that creek was easily in the 8-10lb range. In my naive mind I thought all bass were that size. We were only in Louisiana for a few years and I never got deep into bass fishing as I was heavily involved in other sports. 25+ years later I have yet to catch anything bigger. One day I’ll get back down to the boot and hopefully catch a new PB. I’m highly doubtful that it’s going to happen up here in Idaho but you never know.

The lake is being drawn down for dredging. It is down 4’. It used to be a cypress swamp fed by bayou Duplantier. Early 1900’s it was clear cut and the bayou was dammed to create a lake. We used to water ski and fish but it began to silt in and nothing larger than a trolling motor is allowed because of the stumps. Currently the dredging project is removing stumps and sunken logs to create a larger flood control system. The lake record bass is 13 pounds 12 ounces caught under the interstate overpass.

Your growing up fishing suburban Illinois sounds a lot like me growing up in suburban Indiana. I had a little pond by a cemetery, tucked away in a little block of woods, and noone fished it. I'd tie on a double spinner buzzbait in the summer and wade the pond. Man those were the days! My parents weren't outdoors folks, but I was ate up with it. My Granddad got me a 15 or 16 year subscription to Outdoor Life magazine, and that was my hunting/fishing mentor. I caught 5lb bass out of that little pond, and thought I was Al Linders! Lol
I got a paper route and bought a Ryobi baitcaster (the old top push button style from the early to mid 80's) and a pistol grip Berkley Lightning rod, along with numerous others. If I wasn't fishing, I was casting to a bucket in the yard, getting better with that baitcaster.
My mother passed not long ago, and I have been going through all her things, and found that old Ryobi/Berkley combo. It's not an Aldebaren, but 40+ years on, and it still works! 😂

LSU Lakes are currently in the middle of a dredging project for the reason you found...way too shallow to be healthy. Not sure when you filmed but I didn't see any of the construction equipment so I'd guess it had to be 6+ months earlier. Those "bayous" are just drainage canals.

Thats awsome. Loved how you showed the air drop of trout in the high lakes after tossing thay bass. That video was taken in Oregon and its definitely common method. However, they really dont know how many make it. Maybe only a few if any. Or, maybe more then half. There's no data at the moments but maybe there should be.

Hey Jon! Come to Utah!! It can be a challenging state, but you can start in the northern part of the state at Flaming Gorge. You can catch big lake trout, giant small mouth, rainbows, and Kokanee there. Make your way into Salt Lake City, and try to master one the hardest "concrete fishing" cities in the US. Keep making your way south, and fish at the most beautiful lake ever.. Lake Powell. It's apart of the Colorado river chain. Good largemouth and Smallmouth fishing, crappie, walleye, as well as giant strippers. My middle name is Powell after that lake. So I may be a little bit biased, but it's the most unique lake on earth. Filming there would be your camera man's dream place to film. Lots of great wildlife, but the B roll shots going through those winding, slick rock canyons would be so cool to see filmed. Drone shots=incredible. There is also Native American artifacts that can be explored at the lake. Gin clear water like Havasu, great for GoPro shots. This whole state can be explored, and have so many different backgrounds, climates, and regions for fishing. You or one of the Googans definitely to film some vids out here!! If you read this, and want to know more hmu!! I've been a subscriber for years, and I would love to help out with bringing you an idea of exploring a beautiful, challenging, and charming state! Thanks Dude! #neverstop

@22:00 homie is fishing corporation canal on LSU campus after staying in Lod Cook. Plenty of turtles and snakes in there, but most of the decent fish will be in the pond behind the Crescent at University Lake (only access to condo owners, used to sneak in there in college and there was many +5lb largemouth). @22:50 homie fishing behind Todd Graves (Cane's owner) house. That pond is mostly silted in which can be seen from the video. Again, almost no fish in there. Jon, the entire university lake system is currently being dredged but used to have an old state record largemouth in the lake at @25:00. Average lake depth is ~2feet. Heavy siltation causes it be poor habitat, currently being rectified by the dredging contractor (Sevenson). Also. historic drought likely wiped out many of the fish last year. Come back in ~4-5 years and there should be a ton of largemouth everywhere. Source - I am a BR native and am an engineer who was part of the dredge design team.

    I've just had a thought:
How about you go and fish in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone?
I've read that the fish are huge; not because of radiation, but because no one fishes there and they just have time to grow large.

They are actually draining out all the ponds at LSU and making it into something fishable since there is all kinds of crap that was dumped in there over the years

That big house in Baton Rouge where you lost your frog is owned by Todd graves, owner of canes chicken fingers. He had a treehouse built like the Ewok village from Star Wars- on the tv show treehouse masters

You were fishing the Shreveport Duck Ponds (the first ponds). Its been a trash spot for 20 years. Yall parked at Library and were literally 30 yards away from Rollin in The Dough and some of best burgers in town. Theres a bayou called Clear Lake down highway 1 thats all cypress trees and gators. Great spot to fish in a kayak. Some good lakes in Texas that are 90 minutes away too, Actual lakes. There are ponds everywhere in and around Shreveport but most are private.

They dredged that lake at lsu 2 months ago and hasn’t had any water in it.. I literally was walking on it a couple weeks ago. If you’re ever back look at Spanish lake off Alligator Bayou Rd.

I have seen carp destroy rods and reels... I had a 30 pound common carp burn up the drag in a reel... loads of fun because of the fight! Caught in spring from ice cold water decent for smoking too!

You should do a casting concrete tx gulf coast edition and target different salt water species. Try to get trout, redfish, flounder, black drum, sheepshead, and a jack by the end of it… Galveston to Freeport to rock port to corpus. 4 coastal cities to try and catch all sought after bay species would be awesome and very unique

I really enjoy the casting concrete series. I think international episodes need to be made in the future. New species, new local cuisines and awkward encounters with the local residents. What’s not to love?.
