Asia did not make a mistake; she purposely threw a new count in the middle of the singles because she wanted to make the most impact to coincide with the phrasing of the music. And she signaled that she was going to throw the new count in enough time for everyone to know that she was going to throw it, including the Stingette who continued with her single. Apparently, she was not paying attention even though it appears like she's looking directly at Asia (1:12). Nevertheless, I commend that Stingette for recovering quickly.
Agreed. I don't get it though. Asia would've still had time to throw that last count after the individual formation and the squad would've finished before the song was over if she only waited. I think she's just really excited at MCC and wants to SLAY as much as possible out of every song played at this game. Wanting to live up to the standards she's already set and not let the fans down! Think about sitting across the football field and hearing the band hit the top of the crescendo AND simultaneously watching all the Stingettes stand together and hit that last 8-count. That is what Asia was going for. The only thing she should have done is start the 8-count eight beats before she actually did to achieve the effect she was going for. And the team should have practiced it in this manner because many of them looked liked they were caught like deer headlights even though they properly threw the 8-count. I have watched several captains from different HBCU dance teams on youtube over the years and very few captains know the music well enough to know the right 8-counts to throw to REALLY take advantage of the nuances in the music. April of the 2013 SU Dancing Dolls team came close and so does Asia for this year's Stingettes.

I know this is an old video but I just needed to comment. I’m trying to figure out why people think Asia messed up. The captain knows exactly how many girls are on the squad which means she knows how many 8 counts will be thrown during singles (a captain the knows her music). Asia clearly looked back and saw who was currently dancing when she held up the signal to change the formation. She wanted to end with a count that everyone would do together. She could’ve waited 1 more 8 count but then she wouldn’t have gotten that leg crossing ripple effect as the song played out the last 2 measures. Asia knew what she was doing.
