About 20 years ago I was teaching an eventing clinic in Wisconsin and one of the riders told me that she had never been able to persuade her horse to go through water. I told her to ride up towards the water until the horse stopped, then just sit there and do nothing. No hitting, kicking, butt scooting, or speaking, but also to keep him pointed towards the water if he tried to turn away. Whenever the horse made the slightest forward movement, she was to praise and pet him. In four or five minutes this horse walked calmly through the water. Horses know what you want to do, but it sometimes takes them a little time to sort it out.

I love this story :) Agreed, sometimes they just need some time to figure it out.

When I had my horse, I did the same exact thing. I just let Justice think constantly until he got very comfortable with whatever it was that was bothering him. We made a great team together. Thank you for sharing.

Fantastic video, everyone should understand this is the best way! Way better than kicking and hitting and yelling! And, works much faster too!

I like that the horse was able to take his time and process. He was curious, a good sign. He was thinking and the rider was patient. The horse and rider were partners. The part that interested me is I read an article which unfortunately I cannot find at the moment but it explained how horses see visually and why they move their head up and down to judge distance or focus like we saw in your video. I wish I could find that article because it explains what the horse was seeing and trying to focus. I believe they are able to focus their eyes because of how the light hits the ground and because they have a larger horizontal span than we do, their vertical is not as good as ours so they move their head up and down to visualize the object. Their eyes also take more time than ours to focus on dark vs. light. That is why when they see a dark valley, dark skinny horse trailer, dark aisle in a barn it takes their eyes a much longer time to adjust but when they do adjust they can see much better than us. At nighttime they see much better than us. And their sense of smell extraordinary compared to ours. Wish I could find the article but, I am sure their are many articles out there on horse's vision.

Hahaha, the music is so awesome! Glad to know it's "ok" to get off to reward the horse and just kind of hang out. With my horse, if I do on foot what I want him to do when I'm mounted, well this seems to make a big difference in his confidence and bravery. Thank you!

I have the same question as detsnumber! Will wait for a reply when you get a chance! Thank you for the reminder to be patient and how the pause is his right to think...process...ask...control his fears and turn them into confidence. Perfect!

I didn't use any leg at any time. I just sat and waited. Also I rubbed his neck a few times to reassure him.

I wish I had watched this just 1 week ago, before I made my new horse go out into a scary new pasture. I will do much better by him the next time we go. Funny how what you need to know comes along at exactly the right time (or VERY close to it!).

Love your films and I was intrigued by your saddle from the brief view I saw in Listening to the Horse series! I would love to know what brand it is since I got a really good look when you mounted up! Thank you! It is a beautiful looking saddle and looks super comfy too!!

Can I ask if you were using your leg during the forward moves or just sat quietly ?? Or using voice maybe? Lovely little video

I didn't use my leg or encourage him with my voice. I just sat quietly, rubbed his neck to reassure him and told him it was ok :) He decided to walk forward himself each time. Thanks for the comment :) Elaine
