Rockstar Games, the Tony Hawk series, and later Guitar Hero & Rock Band had a chokehold on my childhood. Honorable mention to COD Modern Warfare and World at War as well. Simpler times before all the stress, trials & tribulations of adulthood (I'm 27 now, for context)
Growing up in the 2000s, Rockstar Games was THE gold standard for games. Where I live every computer that is used to play games has at least one GTA game installed (usually San Andreas). Anytime someone asked, "hey, I wanna start playing games. What should I start with?" they were always told to play at least one Rockstar game. Whether it was GTA or Max Payne or Midnight Club. They were inescapable and you couldn't help but get sucked in and enjoy it. I used to look up to Rockstar. They were the only developer I ever fanboyed over. To watch them go from making such varied and high quality games throughout the 6th and 7th generation of consoles to just releasing 2 games for the 8th generation (I consider the PS4 and Xbox One versions of GTA V to be the definitive console versions of the game because the PS3/Xbox 360 consoles were holding the developers back and the PS5/Xbox Series X versions are just pointless). Watching them not honour their own legacy by releasing the awful Definitive Edition trilogy was what broke me. Then I found out that many of the writing team left Rockstar after Red Dead Redemption 2 and I learned about all the scrapped ideas and rumours about what GTA 6 was originally supposed to be and I couldn't blame them for leaving. I want to believe that Take Two Interactive is responsible for the downfall of Rockstar Games but apart from just "they got greedy" we'll never know what led to the fall from grace. I do think GTA 6 will be a great game but I don't know if it'll surpass the standards of past greats like IV and San Andreas. And even if it does, it'll probably be the last good GTA. That's how little faith I have left in the developers.
Get the original Xbox ports of the first three gta games, they're objectively the best versions. Still mad they've never bothered to rerelease the stories games, Chinatown wars, or the the first two gta games in any capacity, though honestly after the anniversary, rdr and definitive edition ports its probably for the best.
@@wolfboy20 Supposedly the game was set from the late 70s to the early 80s in Vice City and would have featured a story inspired by the Netflix series Narcos. As the years in game passed and the story progressed, the map and characters would change in different ways. New cars and buildings would show up, new songs would get added to the radio stations. Characters would visibly get older. Basically the world would feel more alive due to several things in it changing as in game time passed. Some of the vehicles and weapons which were meant to show up in this version of GTA 6 were said to be reused in GTA V in Online updates like in the Cayo Perico Heist update. It is believed that these ideas were scrapped because Take Two Interactive thought that a period piece game would be harder to make online updates for and therefore would be harder to sell Sharkcards for (look at what happened to Red Dead Online). So they supposedly forced Rockstar Games to turn GTA 6 into another game set in modern times which, combined with the lack of single player DLC for GTA V and the constant focus on Online updates, possibly led to several members of the writing team for the GTA series leaving Rockstar Games. Those people basically felt like they no longer had as much control over the GTA series as they used to (they weren't even allowed to decide when the story would be set) so they left with some even forming their own studios (Absurd Ventures).

I'll never forget when I played GTA VC for the first time. That was the first Rockstar game I played, and it's what got me into their whole GTA series and the 80's music as well. I then found out that Rockstar also makes games dedicated to racing enthusiasts: Midnight Club. Some time later, with me getting a bit tired of playing NFS games, I decided to give Midnight Club 2 and 3 a try. Man, the joy I felt when driving and boosting through the city with the incredible jams that they had, it was truly an amazing experience.

I think the main reasons everyone says GTA3 is the hardest of the OG Trilogy is the slow exit from upturned vehicles/ no diving out, no swimming and that GOD AWFUL auto-aim In terms of player freedom; you've got _wayyy_ fewer restrictions re 'how you complete your missions' than 4 or 5. As for which major Dev struck the most gold the last 2 and a bit decades, arguing for anyone other than Rockstar is a losing fight. They are to the 6th and 7th gen of gaming what Tarrantino was to 90s and 00's Hollywood
gta 3 is the hardest one because of some small issues like: having no map on pause menu, having no blips on minimap when you are near ammu-nation or pay'n'spray, aim is slightly offset from the center and some missions are straight up impossible to finish if you are not an experienced player (same can be applied for both vice city and san andreas but gta 3 is infamous for having some seriously unbalanced missions - especially near the end of the game - one of them is the mission with coffee boxes)
The Warriors (game) were actually pretty famous in my country, especially in the city where I lived at the time. I think it kickstarted a bunch of elementary and middle school kids to form gangs and buy spray paints, myself included. I don't know if this gets me in trouble now, but It got to the point of us going to school with spray paints with the intention to write our gang initials on the back of the buildings, then meet up after school and spray some more elsewhere, covering existing gang paints (this is asking for a lot of trouble), and even having our own hangout akin to The Warriors. PS2 rentals were pretty big in those days, which was how most kids were able to play the game (also from word of mouth). Mention any quote from the game, and someone will probably recognize it, "Oh shit, The Warriors, right?" or "Hey, that's Cleon!". Granted, the game arguably influenced us kids in a pretty bad way back then, but most of us have moved on. Though, the game is still somewhere in our hearts in a fun and warm memory kind of way, lmao. Thanks for opening up these memories, awesome video!
If I read your video right you produced this entire thing at the age of 18? When I was 18, I could barely write a passable 2000 word essay - you've got a bright career in front of you mate.
Yeah this caught me off guard. I’ve been binge watching his content all night and he mentions a LOT of games which I had forgotten about like “midtown madness” and I was like oh SH*T” I played that game when I was like 5ish on my family’s first computer. This guy must be around my age. I’m about to turn 30. Midtown madness released on 1999.
Red Dead Revolver was my favorite game when it came out. The reason why it's so unlike the other Rockstar games around it is because Capcom was originally making it but cancelled it then Rockstar bought it, finished it, & released it.
Regarding that car in Caesar mission in San Andreas, originally the devs intended to use a helicopter to go there and take those picture from helicopter that's why carl and caesar are screaming at each other when you're clicking the pictures. Amd they thought how did Caesar got a chopper anyway? So they replaced the chopper with that lowrider amd I suppose the code of having the mission fail when you leave the helicopter got carried over.
I honestly think that the immense amount of 80's nostalgia we still see to this very day, arguably started with GTA Vice City. Also i remember buying the Vice City soundtrack and wondering why i heard Hold the Line by Toto on the Flash FM disk when it didn't appear in game. (although it did appear in San Andreas)
I was so confused when Hold The Line was mentioned in the VC section when it was in SA, but I realized it was supposed to be for VC at the time. Luckily we got Africa instead!
I can’t believe you’re 18 you’re making me feel old even tho i’m only 23 haha, i remember going to this kids house for a sleepover even though he was kinda a dick to me just because i knew he had San Andreas and movies like Paranormal Activity when i wasn’t allowed to play or watch stuff like that yet. I also remember playing GTA V on release at friends houses because their mom would buy it for them, but I couldn’t get it myself until it came out for PS4 and i ordered it online and snuck it past my parents 😭. And dude, the mods for GTA IV went crazyyyy when i was a kid, the game took me days to torrent even though it was only like 10GB because my internet was REALLY slow even for 2010, but I kept it for years (🙏🏻 to Razor1911). I miss those days
When you were talking about how Midnight Club 3 had that appeal to both racing fans and non racing fans. I fully agreed with you because that’s one of the things that made the game so good. From the outside it had that appeal where it was a fun racing game that can be played by anyone from different backgrounds and genres like you said. Yet from the inside it still had many key components and features that helped make this game a solid racing game for all the die hard racing fans as well. This isn’t related to this video. But whenever I see a “problem with modern racing games” type of video. Everyone always talks about how we’re missing this and we’re missing that. But no one talks about how most racing games just simply aren’t that fun anymore and how they also lost that appeal to other non racing fans. I think if some racing games could go back to having that appeal where it could be played by anyone while still having that key characteristics of what makes a racing game a racing game, without sacrificing the core fanbase, and trying to make it a fun experience just like the Midnight Club games did. It would probably change up the whole atmosphere and mood of the newer games, and might make the experience a lot more better and fun for the player imo. Overall this video was really good. I enjoyed watching it. The editing was nice and very clean. I noticed there was also some funny moments in here as well. Especially when you talked about the flying missions from Vice City. Well actually that probably wasn’t funny to you but it was to me sorry lol. Also this might seem like a hot take. But I think this is your best video yet!
To this day I feel like they are still on a great streak as far as game releases go for rockstar, games like red dead 1, max Payne 3, gta 4, gta 5, and red dead 2 are fantastic games, curious to see what gta 6 will bring, great video!
I remember playing all the hard missions but you eventually learn the "trick" to em & then you're asking yourself, "How did I ever have difficulty with that?" Like chasing the Vagos on the train is SUPER easy once you figure it out, same with the RC missions, stunt schools, etc. Still though, a handful of missions don't have an easy trick & really come down to luck. I still get nervous when I have to play Kingdom Come in GTAIII.
Dude, you're absoLUTELY nailing the "long-form documentary youtuber" format. Your input and research is above board, and thus you're very intetesting to listen to. Keep it up man! You really sparked an interest in The Warriors game with this video. I always neglected it, thinking it was some weird quirky attempt of R* to enter the movie game market.
Clicked this video and thought this was a gta v challenge run or something stayed for a video essay with hilarious and highly edited transitions and fax
i'm glad i finally stumbled upon a good long-form video about a topic i'm passionate about. kind of sad about the small time spent talking about the midnight club games, but everything else is really good; the writing really impressed me, and the editing is simple but effective. love it, keep it up!
@@Fastminer07 I mean hey... You're channel dude, I'm just a part of the audience. And anyways, seems to me you have a jam packed Arsenal of long format essays... So I'm content!!
I mean yeah, I make these mainly for my personal enjoyment, but since I'm not full time yet, the only way I can keep making them like I have is if people watch them.
Because of GTA Vice City, and my parents obsession with partying and 80s music, I had legitimately spent my child hood thinking it was the 80s. Hell, I was wanting to write a letter to Quiet Riot because of their song on Vice City. I cannot thank the game enough for having me change my perspective on so many things from a stupid young age.. I genuinely think it made my bond better with my dad. Getting to know countless 80s tunes and that all i listen to now, I find myself reminiscing about the 80s in every and any way possible
I'll never forget the day my dad bought me a ps2 with vice city, san andreas and gta 3 they all came in one small box, it was so nostalgic especially when i wake up early in the morning and play san andreas i remember writing down the cheat codes on a small note pad
I just finished the video but I gotta comment on how fire that intro scene was, 2000s Rockstar is probably a record yet to be broken. I'd even argue they kept the run going until just after GTA V.
yup GTAO kinda put an end to that streak. Which makes Rockstar's standing so disfavorable in my eyes. Of course there's fun to be had with Online, and RDR2 is an amazing game but the time between games and just the scummy things they've done for so long is just. Something i can't vibe with
Max Payne 2 doesn't really count as a Rockstar Games title, they just published it, Remedy was the developer. Also playing any Max Payne game on a console should be a crime.
That's the same with MP1, but this video was looking more at games published by Rockstar, like arguably the same could be said about Midnight Club 2 and Red Dead Revolver because the dev team wasn't part of Rockstar until near the games release
Its always nice to see this dude pop up in my recommeneded. He provides superb presentation, great analysis and excellent commenatary, and honestly? That got me to subscribe to him. Keep up the amazing work bro.
I'm a bit surprised nobody else has pointed this out, but there's a factual error at 20:56 - "Hold The Line" by Toto wasn't in GTA Vice City, it was in GTA San Andreas on the K-DST station. As for Vice City, you may have meant "Africa", another Toto song which was featured in Vice City on Emotion 98.3. Other than that, I have to say that I will definitely follow your channel in the near future. Several of those are among my favorite games of all time, so this was quite a trip down memory lane, even though I occasionally return to the 3D GTAs or Max Paynes to this day.
It's technically a factual error, but not as much as you'd think. When I was going back through the ost to pick favorites for that section, I pulled up a playlist on yt which claimed to be the full playlist, which was likely based on the international releases of the OST on CDs, because the European edition of the Flash FM soundtrack CD does have Hold the Line, so while it wasn't in the version of the game I played, it was "technically" on the soundtrack.
I think Rareware 1993 to 2002 had a pretty spectacular run: Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3 & 64, Killer Instinct 1 & 2/Gold, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Mickey's Speedway USA (Hugely underappreciated in my book), Jet Force Gemini Hit after hit after hit right up until Microsoft stepped in....
Honestly, it might have been a better idea not to go into MCLA and GTA IV on this video. A. because Fastminer already talked his opinion on MCLA on his Midnight Club video and B. because I feel like GTA IV and it's episodes are so large in scope just on story alone that it would take a considerably large video to just talk about the main game, and an even longer one to talk about the DLCs. Other than that, a good video as always, also, you HAVE to play GTA LCS and VCS if you haven't already, the soundtrack alone on both titles is worth the price of admission alone. I mean, LCS has Bring it Back by Moloko, Terrorist by Renegade, Ruff Riders Anthem by DMX and a whole station of nothing but Giorgio Moroder with hits like E=MC2, I wanna Rock You and (my personal favorite) Chase. And VCS is basically just VC again, many of the same artists, different tracks, some artists not featured in the original VC and two funk-adjacent radios with VCFL with smooth funk and what I can only call "love making music" and Paradise FM, one of my favorite disco stations in the series, up there with Bounce FM and both versions of K109 The Stuido.
I made this specific list from my last video on Rockstar called "The Greatest Franchise Rockstar Abandoned" were I gotta bunch of comments that were "umm actually, the best franchise they abandoned was ____________" and so I tallied them up, threw in Midnight Club and GTA cause I already knew they were good, then sat down and played them all for the first time. So stuff like State of Emergency, Oni, and Beaterator got cut, that and this video was already way too long.

Like chasing the Vagos on the train is SUPER easy once you figure it out, same with the RC missions, stunt schools, etc. Still though, a handful of missions don't have an easy trick & really come down to luck. I still get nervous when I have to play Kingdom Come in GTAIII.
The music in Midnight Club 2 is amazing!
WWAIT WAIT WAIT YOUR 18? wth
Good video, bit being born 2006 is a huge L
@SWOTHDRA It let's me review these games without any nostalgia glasses
Dude, you're absoLUTELY nailing the "long-form documentary youtuber" format. Your input and research is above board, and thus you're very intetesting to listen to. Keep it up man!
The only games from this list that I actually played was GTA SA & Max Payne 1 (and also GTA IV lol but it don't count), and yeah, Rockstar absolutely SLAYED it back in the day. I _gotta_ try out MC at some point
Very interesting! Awesome video, really high quality production!
*6:35** my older brother was have that GTA 2 CD.* Gosh... i still these days loved to GTA 2 Short Movie Intro.
i recently found your channel while looking into some racing games. You have some incredible quality in your content, keep it up, i was surprised to see your channel to be so underrated.
I love that Trigun colorless sky you used for your intro into the Red Dead Revolver
Rockstar games rocks🎸
Hearing the FM1 theme for the edit of all the rockstar games made me very happy
(I've been a long time forza fan, but I started with FM3 and FH1, so I'ma ask) that's it's main theme?
The voice actors or CJ and Franklin being cousins IRL feels like deep game lore
Yeah no, your video took away me feeling old. You are a man of culture, love how you present all of the music with love. I like and subbed. Hope your next ad deal doesnt fall through
Im ngl it triggered me a disproportionate amount that you showed Max Payne footage without bullet time leaping a single time 😂
Idk why, I didn't really use leaping much in my playthroughs
Bro these transitions are top notch keep up the good work just got yourself a new fan.
I like the im sorry music by Tyler in the background
Btw great video as always
One of my fav content creators
Man, I loved your editing. Awesome content too.
This video is fantastic, it's like a bunch of smaller reviews all at once
Big ups to the Forza Motorsport cover of Frankenstein being used in the beginning, I’ll never forget that cover as long as I live.
I've wanted to use Frankenstein for a hot minute, and when I found a good cover that wasn't in Content ID, I knew I had to use it.
@@Fastminer07 the ZZ Top cover they did was hot shit too, Motorsport 1 had absolute banger songs!
great video my friend!!! also i noticed you are using davinci resolve like me.
58:26 i thought somebody spamming my discord!!!! WHAT
started watching you last year, MY GOD bro the editing scripting music choice everything is great! I saw bully for the fist time over 12 years ago and i only just finished it this week, old rockstar just slaps SOOOO well
Hearing you say 3DS was your first Nintendo console when you were 13 makes me feel very old
We could be the parentd of this new UA-camrs wave
I think learning how to fly planes and helicopters in this game was the reason why I don't rage as much as my friends in other games.
I think i fell asleep to this video because it was fully watched yet i dont remember 😅 so here's another watch! Love this content
Was a little surprised by your age, great content from such a young person is refreshing, it wasn't really on my mind til you brought it up buying your first nintendo system. To the moon bud, hope your channel keeps growing.
Great video man. An hour long video with very solid analysis of Rockstar. Keep up the great work.👍
I absolutely love the fact that you used Frankenstein from Junkie Xl from the first Forza. Hidden gem.
55:00 cool to see where that Regular Show reference came from...
What i really want to see from this guy is a Burnout series vid
The one series i've absolutely adored alongside the NFS & Forza franchise
You won't have to wait very long then (although knowing me, you will still have to wait some time)
That's fine
I can wait
You really sparked an interest in The Warriors game with this video. I always neglected it, thinking it was some weird quirky attempt of R* to enter the movie game market.
It’s crazy that the company that saved rockstar with take two has also contributed to the building of greed over innovation
Fever 105, Bounce FM and Space 103.2 are legendary
Alright hold on, the transition in Max Payne 2 was solid as hell. Sat there in awe for a moment.
Great music selection!
Here at 35.8k subs, love the editing style, also GTA SA is the goat no debate😂
UltraViolet and your video essays/analysis' are on a different level, well done keep it up!
amazing video as usual! really enjoy long form content like this
Clicked this video and thought this was a gta v challenge run or something stayed for a video essay with hilarious and highly edited transitions and fax
Love the use of the FM1 music to introduce Rockstar.
Algorithm decided to serve me your video, and I decided to sink an hour of my life into it, and I don't regret it. Well done, keep up the good work.
As soon as I heard one of the themes from Uncut Gems in the background I had to watch the whole video
This video is perfection. Glad i was recommended this
Can’t count on my hands the amount of times I thought “immaculate music taste” during this video
20:48 I cannot believe that you did not include Billie Jean in the entire segment you showcased Vice City's Soundtrack!
Bully is literally in my top 10 games of all times i really recommend you give it another try one day. Also play the PC version it has more content
This was a pleasure to watch, and to have a stroll down memory lane with u. Also u have good taste in music
Transition at 27:15 was smoooooooth, great video.
I completely felt that when he said it took 2 hours for the lil plane mission 🥲
Hell yeah love your videos man
bro you got some impeccable taste in music im not even gon hold you
I think tactical bacon production video reviewing all GTA SA missions is pretty solid
i'm glad i finally stumbled upon a good long-form video about a topic i'm passionate about. kind of sad about the small time spent talking about the midnight club games, but everything else is really good; the writing really impressed me, and the editing is simple but effective. love it, keep it up!
I didn't talk about them for long because I already made a video just on Midnight Club.
@@Fastminer07 yeah, i saw! definitely gonna check it out soon
Finally, i have found another channel that uploads banger video essays on games. The next 3 months are gonna be a cruise.
I've got some smaller videos planned after this one (mainly cause of how big this was), but I've got a couple big things planned this year.
@@Fastminer07 trust me mate, judging by the quality of this video, the only direction you will be venturing towards is up
46:35 also a fact: shawn "solo" actually was a voice actor in GTA SA as the slightly fat GSF gang members which you can find around most of the time
Because of GTA Vice City, and my parents obsession with partying and 80s music, I had legitimately spent my child hood thinking it was the 80s.
I'll never forget the day my dad bought me a ps2 with vice city, san andreas and gta 3 they all came in one small box, it was so nostalgic especially when i wake up early in the morning and play san andreas i remember writing down the cheat codes on a small note pad
after a vinesauce clip and roulé in the back on an other video, you hit me with the trigun ost
49:47 yall have no idea how intense my chills got when this played haha
I thought this was a speedrun history coverage.
But received something better.
I just finished the video but I gotta comment on how fire that intro scene was, 2000s Rockstar is probably a record yet to be broken. I'd even argue they kept the run going until just after GTA V.
yup
GTAO kinda put an end to that streak. Which makes Rockstar's standing so disfavorable in my eyes.
Of course there's fun to be had with Online, and RDR2 is an amazing game
but the time between games and just the scummy things they've done for so long is just. Something i can't vibe with
I played a lot of The Warriors back in 2006 when I was 11. I wasn't mature enough for it though. lol
Great video well made great edits 😅
Amazing video, for how long it is i enjoyed every second of it.
Never thought you downloaded one of my dupes thanks! ^^
Was it the Skyline?
@@Fastminer07 My OC named Asriel. In case you forgot is at 1:06
@aevhronemeggy_official That was just the downloadable dupe list, I don't have any of them.
@@Fastminer07 Oh oops my bad heh.
9:49 3 is so much harder than the rest, especially if you’re going for 100%. That shit was a nightmare
i remember friends calling me over to beat the vicy city rc chopper mission haha
It has to be Valve and Rockstar for me. They were very consistent. I adore the two.
the presentation in this video is very good lol
55:17 the only way i know this guys is from Andrew Dice Clay’s “Ford Fairlane”
Max Payne 2 doesn't really count as a Rockstar Games title, they just published it, Remedy was the developer. Also playing any Max Payne game on a console should be a crime.
That's the same with MP1, but this video was looking more at games published by Rockstar, like arguably the same could be said about Midnight Club 2 and Red Dead Revolver because the dev team wasn't part of Rockstar until near the games release
The editing of this video is so good. Good job man.
4:54 fm1 soundtrack used for background music. instant sub
I'd say RGG Studio Is Having One Of The Greatest Runs as Of Right Now With The Yakuza/LAD/Judgement Games.
I am yet to play the Yakuza games, but all my friends have said really good things about them
@@Fastminer07 go play Yakuza 0 right now, such a good game
I think Rareware 1993 to 2002 had a pretty spectacular run:
Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3 & 64, Killer Instinct 1 & 2/Gold, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Mickey's Speedway USA (Hugely underappreciated in my book), Jet Force Gemini
Hit after hit after hit right up until Microsoft stepped in....
I hated Nintendo for ruining Rare...
It was a really nice video!! Loved it!! Your videos are amazing
Great documentary, keep up the good work. But I was expecting State of Emergency to be in this video.
Persona 5 background is immaculate mate nice
I've played GTA 3 more than any other in the series. It's one I love to revisit just outta pure nostalgia.
